The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

What pinging is suppose to sound like anyway? From what I've heard its very subtle. My truck is so noise, theres no way I would hear that. I would also like to know how to be sure.

I feel like you can hear the sound of the motor change. ( like it's not running as well) the sound for me changes as it is pinging or about to.

When in 5th gear, going up a hill, going 60mph+, when I accelerate I think I hear the faintest sounds of pinging. I don't want to confuse this with the mechanical noises occurring when I add more load to the engine by accelerating.

Well those "mechanical noises" are actually ping. There is a thing called high load knock that you can easily get when you are lugging up a hill even N/A. With a manual I hear it a lot when I lug it starting in second or when I am on a really steep hill and starting out in first. Basically what I am saying is that if you are lugging up a hill in 5th no matter how much fuel you throw at it, it will ping from the load.

now if it is doing it on level ground at like 3k rpm and WOT that is what will require more fuel.

Thanks, no noise on level ground or WOT. Only immediately after pressing the throttle. High gear and under load. So I guess I'm OK.

Thanks for the thread. I just ordered the replacement parts i needed from it. Soon it will all be installed and running (fingers crossed).

I have a question for the pro's...

Is it mandatory to upgrade the fuel pump when you go high boost?
My kit has the 5th injector, small pulley & fuel/timing calibrator.
Thank You,

Are you trying to max the psi out of your blower? If so I say yes since you do not want to lean out crate pinging and destroy the head.

Nice try, Scramble. Trying to fool us with your 4 cylinder.

What're the flow rate of your factory injectors? They're 298cc, right? Is your fuel pump the same as ours?

I cannot be certain as we know not how much boost you'll be making, but I think you'd need an upgraded pump. It looks like the dudes on customtacos are running a 190lph

What!? I said I had a 5th injector.

Yes, 298cc, I'll have to check on the fuel pump.
The TRD High Boost SC is 8psi. (low boost is 4psi)
I guess I check some Taco sites as they have more of these engines.
Thanks

Well yes, max for the TRD SC is 8psi, I dont plan on larger injectors or anything yet, this is all still new to me.
Thanks

According to Camel Back we have the same fuel pump.

Fits 1999 Toyota 4Runner Base

Part Number: 2322146010

Fits 2000 Toyota 4Runner SR5

So I but the bullet and ordered the 7th injector kit. Just wondering how many of you guys use it with out the smaller pulley, fuel pump and thermostat replacement? Also did you guys run it with gadgets standard tuned setting out of the box? And did it run okay? My concern is not to make more power although that would be nice but it is more of making the blower more reliable and last longer as well as getting rid of the horrid ping. If it is okay to just run the out the box setup I am going to leave the settings untouched.

I live at 4500 ft and am on the verge of needing the fuel pump. I have only changed 1 setting. (Overage pressure from 3 to 1). To make 7th turn on at 1 psi instead of 3 psi.

2.2 pulley. Tune works alright but could be better. It actually runs Better than my own tuning.

thanks for the info! any one else? i am thingking of runnig it out of the box to see how everything does. any noticable decrease in your MPG?

My fuel milage has stayed the same...after the first 2 months! Yeah, had a hard time staying out of the throttle the first 2 months...lol!! But now I'm back to my "normal" driving and my mpg has done the same. The first 2 months though...I lost 2-3 mpg...oops!

are you using the 7th with just its standar settings? or have you tinkered with it? also did you swap the pump out and use a smaller pulley or are you just using the original pulley?

I purchased the 7th injection kit with a 2.2 pulley, but never installed them. I wanted to keep things simple when I installed my SC...so my intentions were to step up to the 7th and 2.2 pulley once I was sure I had no issues with the SC. But once I got the SC on, it itself has met my power needs for the time being. I have zero issues...no pinging anywhere in the RMP range. I can jump on the throttle at any RPM's and I have instant power.

Sorry if I couldn't be of more help. I personally see all these headaches with the 7th injector kit. To be honest...if I need more power then what I have now...I'll probably just swap in a V-8 and be done with it!

Like shoots said, change the over pressure down a bit, I think I'm also 1. From what I'm experiencing/feeling/seeing/reading the only way to answer that is to drive it however you drive it and see if it works for you. Eveyone drives differently and expects different things. Also the Air/Fuel Ratio gauge is the only way to be absolutely sure you're safe and all that.

Flat answer: I added 10% more fuel across the board, and also have it adding fuel in the lower boost/lower rpm ranges than the standard set up. I did the same with timing, based solely on feel and audible ping.

Now I have an AFR gauge so I can be more accurate and it turns out I can add even more fuel. I have a different manual trans from an older generation and 4.88 gears factory in the back so that affects the entire feel and torque load for me. No smaller pulley but run premium fuel, bigger fuel pump, the spark plugs swapped to whatever gadget sent and K&N intake despite Gadgets disdain.
Driving it is the only way to tell in the end
