The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

Sorry I spaced on your responding to your post. I believe healthy compression numbers for the 3.4 are around 180-200 for our motors. New is 218 PSI and the min is around 145. I don't think you need to get a compression test with 130k, just slap it on.

Post a picture in this thread or you can PM me and I can see what you need.

heres what I got. the small bolts are taped to the dipstick relocation bracket and throttle cable bracket. I will be buying the install kit from trddallas but I know theres some things I need that are not in that kit.

Looks to be just about complete. The only items I don't see are the hoses, bolts to attach the throttle body and throttle body gasket.

These are the bolts needed and a link to buy them.
4 Socket Head Cap Screws, 8 x 1.25 x 65mm Attaches Throttle Body to TRD S/C Manifold
4 Washer, 8mm Flat 1 per Socket Head Cap Screw Used to attach Throttle Body to TRD S/C Manifold
WP121972 12.9 Alloy Steel Standard Metric Socket Head Cap Screw - Grainger Industrial Supply

That should be everything and I wouldn't get the install kit. You have everything needed, but the hoses. I just used some regular tubing from any auto parts store for the lines needed and picked up the correct size T's needed as well. Probably $10 in tubing/T's. I think you need 1/2" or 3/8" and 5/16" maybe. I brought my SC and tested them before purchasing.

Just wanted to let everyone know I will be updating this post slowly, but surely in the near future. I apologize for the lack of information this thread has and will be making up for that. It will go slow as I'm super busy at work and only get about 30 min of computer time at home, so bear with me.

First order of business will be a more extensive and descriptive parts section. BFAD did a great job with the parts list, but I will be adding links to purchase parts (random bolts), pictures (when available) and the parts for the different gen SC's. The 1st gen have some different mounting bolts and hoses. I will also create a diagram for the hose routing for the 1st gens. There are a couple out there, but I will try to take pictures of my set up and compare them to others to make sure they are all consistent.

Secondly, I will add a section for rebuilding your SC. There are some great threads around and it would be helpful to have them in one place. I will be rebuilding my unit very soon and will post links to the sites I bought my parts from, as well as pictures of the install. This should help others gain some confidence when repairing their tired SC's.

Third, I will try to gather as much info on the aftermarket parts for the SC's. Injectors, 6th, 7th (URD & TRD), tuning and such. I will admit I'm not very well versed in this information, but will provide links and as much input as I can.

If someone wants to donate a 7th injector kit then I can do some hands on research....haha

If you guys have any other suggestions post them up. I'm trying to remember as much as possible right now, but I'm sure I forgot some stuff.

Oh yeah is happened:

More details in build thread. But has to get new boost guage though. Will get around 7psi instant throttle and will build to 8 to 9 when I push it. Damn I elevation and not helping with boost lol.

SCRunner12, great thread. Thought I'd throw out a heads up to you. You don't need to have any extra bolts to attach the throttle body, you just reuse the 2 existing studs on the old manifold and the 2 two bolts from the existing manifold. Remove both and switch over to the new supercharger assembly and you're golden.

Hey smkd13 , Fantastic , great job done by you. Waiting for the updated pics.

Using an Autometer 30 in/HGvacuum / 20 psi Boost gauge. Gotta swap out the bulb for a red LED but it seems to be pretty accurate. Going with an AEM UEGO air/fuel next so I can keep an eye on that.

That was the easiest install I have done. Easier than suspension honestly.

been on the new pulley for a couple of months now and still going strong. Gotta get my 7th injector tuned though. I know I am running really rich. still fun though

Loss of Power TRD Supercharger & URD 7th Injector

I have a trd supercharger and have added the URD 7th injector. Everything was running fine at first, but recently it has started to lose power for a few seconds, like it isn't getting any fuel. I can be driving at street speeds and this will happen. It will also happen when I'm accelerating getting on an interstate. So far it picks right back up, but I am concerned.

I'm no mechanic, but would like to know if anyone has had this problem, and what they did to correct it? Do any of you have any suggestions for correcting this problem?

I really would appreciate your help.

thanks,
Jim

Not sure what year you are, but check out this thread.

Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor & Throttle Control Motor Don't Turn Together? - TTORA Forum

Thanks for the information. I really appreciate it.

I was having the problem several times a day, but for the last 2 days no problem. Weird. Going to have someone check it out.

I have a 2002 4runner sport edition. Perfect for me to drive on the highway and to 4wheel in Colorado.

So let me explain how I solved this problem you can try at your own risk.

1. Remove the APPS from the throttle body. (It is the sensor on the throttle body closest to the front of the truck. The TPS is on the back closest to the fire wall.)

2. You will see a white plastic cover on the back of the APPS that is held on by plastic tabs. It cannot be removed without breaking the tabs. Take a largish drill bit and by hand drill through the plastic. WARNING just beyond the plastic cover there is a circuit board with traces on it. If you cut the traces you are dead in the water.

3. Spray electrical contact cleaner in the hole to fill the sensor and actuate the sensor back and forth repeatedly.

4. Drain the cleaner and blow out the sensor. Let it dry it should not take long the cleaner is alcohol based.

5. Re-install and test. If you want after you have driven for a while without failure you could fill the hole with something like epoxy to re-seal it but I have not found this necessary.

Hope this helps but again try at your own risk.

I got a few questions on a supercharger because I'm in the fence with getting one or not.
- do you notice any mpg increase if you were to drive the same as you would without one (I know with a blower you want to drive it more like you stole it)
- do you need the 7th injector kit , I think I've read somewhere that it makes it more reliable?
- is it worth the $3500 to supercharge? basically would you do it again ?
Thanks in advanced

I don't drive mine very hard. I got it so I can pass easier and when I go to the mountains it doesn't struggle so much climbing in the mountains. I would never do it without the urd 7th injector kit. Would I do it again, definitely. I go to Colorado every September 4wheeling, and climbing in the mountains is so much easier. I think the gas mileage is pretty the same as before I put it on, but the power is a lot greater.

I have now owned both a 99 w/o a supercharger and a 98 w/ a supercharger. my supercharger needed rebuilding pretty bad and a buddy and I did it ourselves for under a $100. Find one cheap and rebuild that sucker. I do have the 7th injector and like it but my buddy just put a 2nd gen charger on his runner and simply went with bigger injectors and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and his is doing great and not running lean. and that is with a urd 2.2 pulley. If I had it to do over again I would simply upgrade my injectors and let the ecu do its thing. my 7th injector is still running the base program and it is causing my runner to run REALLY rich. no need to spend 3500 to have the wonderful life of boost.

Gas mileage is about the same after the blower.

In my experience you need the timing control more so than the 7th injector. I got some low gear high RPM ping on mine that needed the URD kit to solve. I got the 7th injector as well so I could run the 2.2" pulley.

I was able to find a unit inexpensively on Ebay brand new so it was quite a bit less than $3500 all told.

I'd definitely do it again. I love the blower on the 4Runner.

A guy has one for sale right now in the classifieds here on T4R.org. I thing he's asking $2200 for both the supercharger and a new 7th injector kit?? Don't quote me on the price, but it's something like that. I know the supercharger was close to new.

Anyway..I thought it was a pretty good deal...you should check it out.

Good luck Buddy!

Hey guys I want to know if it is normal to have a lower pitch rumble/chatter/vibration come from the supercharger right before it stars to make boost? I only notice it when I am accelerating and at lower RPMs I can't hear it a cruising speed. Any help on this would be appreciated. If I have to rebuild the s/c so be it lol nose cones are cheap :p
