The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

That's not completely accurate. Your 4Runner may have AFR if it is a Cali Spec.

If you can plug your rear o2 sensor in to the front, or the pugs are the same, it is o2 not AFR. This comes from Gadget.

I thought the same thing, after reading MTD's FIC thread and the URD AFR Calibrator's page. I went ahead and ordered the AFR, and after speaking with Gadget, swapped it out for an o2. Toyota "started" using the AFR sensor in 2000. That doesn't mean all cars had them.

I'm currently running the AEM meth kit and 2.1 pulley. I haven't had a chance to install the URD o2 calibrator yet.

no mine does have the afr sensor i had to replace the front one 2 years ago.

also my ultra gauge shows my afrs (lambda value)

I was going to run the AEM FIC. purchased it and the boomslang harness. The harness wouldn't work for me. Sold the FIC and got a refund from boomslang. Please don't do business with boomslang. They suck balls.

So for now, I'm just going to try the O2 route.
What was up w it?

And then he sold his 4Runner. Yup, it's gone.

Good luck with the headers!

Also, that STUPID NUT IS STILL ON THE PULLEY! Time to return the impact wrench for a heavy duty one. This is getting silly. Heat & penetrant did NOTHING!

Not that anyone really cares, but I finally got that stupid nut off. Had to buy a 1/2 impact wrench with up to 500 lbs/ft of torque to get it off. I'd like to meet the gorilla that works at the TRD factory that put that nut on the nose cone and let him know to tone it down a bit.

Hahahah dude I see this every day with similar tire shop gorillas who apparently like to fall asleep with their impact guns at full throttle for a handful of minutes.
....I believe spec is around 80 ft/lbs for a tire so get out a torque wrench and do it right. Sheesh...
But I DO care and am glad you succeeded in your endeavors!

Happy Birthday America!

I'm not exactly sure, but I think the harness is set up for AFR, but I have O2.

I think one way of identifying your configuration is in the connectors themselves: and AFR Sensor has 2 gold pins & 2 Silver pins. An O2 sensor has all 4 as silver pins.
This is something I've come across in my research and in the field as a mechanic. Seems to be accurate.

Please let us all know if this method holds any merit or if it's complete BS either.

Two separate tunes for summer and winter?

I'm in the Northern California Sierra Nevada's about about 2500-4000 feet elevation in my '02 4Runner.

I have a rebuilt 1st gen supercharger with 2.2 pulley, 7th injector and a 5 speed swap.

I noticed that during the winter I was unable to hear any detonation under any load or gear.

Now that it's gotten hot here (90-100+) (and I sometimes tow a tandem jet ski trailer 2500#) it does detonate with or without the trailer. Usually for me I hear some detonation around 2000 RPM when I mash the throttle unless I up shift.

One time in particular when pulling the trailer I went from 3rd to 4rth and it sounded like it was raining gravel. Scared me!

I have an AFR partially installed. I went with the AEM. I have the bung welded on and am in the process of installing the rest to check fuel.

So I'm thinking i need to get this tuned for the hot summers and another tune I load for winters.

I don't really understand what the capabilities of the 7th injector is, nor have I ever done any form of tuning.

Like I said I live east of Sacramento 1 hour and would love love some help on this. Willing to pay and drive to get it done.

I had similar pinging and mine has completely vanished audibly. I increased timing retard across Map A of the R4 software grid by 10% and also added in a few small values lower in the grid as well. Basically just keep increasing the numbers for the timing retard in the areas you experience pinging until it goes away. The base tune was close for me.

Fuel ratio is more tricky for yours. '02 likely has AFR sensor NOT the older O2 sensor so the enrichment in those areas isn't possible without an additional piece of URD merchandise.

I'm 40 minutes west of Sacramento and also get 100+ days but elevation is closer to 100 ft or so. I also have AEM gauge and still playing with it. It's a cool unit.

If you wanted to arrange a time to mess with it let me know. Don't gotta pay me. I'd rather see how a similar machine runs anyway.

Good luck

I'll take you up on that offer...... Hope you had fun at the meet dude! Glad you could make it with Geoff

Sounds great. I'll PM you!

we need to find a way to upload fuel maps and share specific info on what works good, where your at, what changes you have made, what changs you plan on making.

you know stuff like that

You could go with 2jzge/gte injectors and run a aem fic with the money you saved. IMO better than running the 7th injector. You're able to datalog what your ecu is reading and adjust accordingly.

so here are my question -
1. are these injectors off a LEXUS GS300?
2. what model of AEM did you use?

i've been thinking through this and i couldn't get past the idea that the 7th injector is just a patch. if you've done this, i'd like to know the details of your setup.

In the absence of having an engine control unit (ECU) that can be modified, the only way to change the fueling/timing is through a piggyback ECU, such as the AEM. It is similar to the old Whipple-tronics on my first blower kit back in 2002. The AEM is patched into the stock ECU harness and it allows you to modify the signals that the ECU sees from the engine sensors.

I have a 1998 4runner with the black TRD blower that I purchased recently. It does not have the 7th injector setup or any other tuning aids. I recently installed a Wideband O2 so I could try to tell what is going on. It is lean at any part-throttle setting and gets a little richer at WOT - 12.8 - 13.2, but I don't get any pinging at all. I think I am going to put a meth kit on it and try to add fuel that way, as well as cool the intake charge.

Hopefully others will chime in about what software they use to monitor the engine when tuning or the answer may be in the prior pages of this thread.

A few pages back some members have experience trouble with a meth kit alone since the ECU wants to cut back fuel as you are trying to add it in closed loop. Of course at WOT and open loop that's not an issue but it's not usable power if you can't get it under all scenarios.

I'm slowly saving up for a wideband and AEM FI/C-6... going to start there and then add either a meth kit or larger injectors (along with a 2.1" pulley). I think I'm still leaning towards meth though for the extra benefits it provides.

Yeah, I already have the 2.1 pulley but I want to figure out the fueling before I install it. Which injectors can we upgrade to? May go ahead and buy the AEM and get it setup.

That's the question. I've searched these forums and people use anywhere from 305 cc Supra injectors to 500 cc racing injectors.

If you change the injectors than an ECU management or piggyback is almost necessary if you want to pass emissions (not sure what your state requires) since it runs the risk of running rich when not in boost. That's why I'm leaning towards a meth kit, much easier to control since there's no injection when not under boost.

The problem is as if the ECU is trying to "learn" too much. Like anticipating when the meth is going to kick in, or as if the meth is always there. The problem is short lived though, thanks to STFT. It only takes a short while of "normal" driving for the ECU to forget about it.

This is why I am going with the O2 calibrator, to make the ECU think it is at, or closer to, an AFR of 14.7. It's kind of like running in open loop more often, but still working with the ECU.
