The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

10:1 isn't that bad. Plus being a little extra rich helps against pinging. If someone needs a method to get by without a 7th injector or other piggyback it works and it takes 5 minutes. When I installed my 7th injector with the preprogrammed tune from Gadget, the 0-60 time was actually slower than just unpluging the o2 and afr's were less than 9:1. Only with extensive programming of the 7th was I able to match and beat the unplugged o2 with free fmu.

So which O2 sensor did you unplug. upstream or down stream? and I assume you were getting a check engine light. Did the ECU not go into limp mode?

this is very interesting

Upstream. Yes u will get a check engine light. All your doing is forcing open loop operation. Split second also sells a module that forces open loop during boost only. It's like 200 bucks. Keep in mind I'm at 5000 feet elevation. So it may be leaner at sea level. I also tried it using the old trd fmu, but it dropped afr's to 9:1, so the TRD fmu may give afr's betterfor sea level. I also in both scenarios had a high output Walbro fuel pump.

Methanol Injection:

Some users choose to add methanol injection instead of or in addition to extra fuel injectors. Methanol injection changes the A/F ratio at high throttle to increase power.

Here is the main thread Methanol users go to start out:
Texas_Ace's Cheap DIY Meth/Water Injection kit Writeup! Get 10hp+ for under $150! - YotaTech Forums

Pros:
-inexpensive
-Fairly simple to install

Cons:
-Have to refill methanol tank occasionally
-In-Depth Tuning is pretty much required

Cooler thermostat
The stock thermostat is rated at 180* F and keeps the engine around 193-195*. However, The stock thermostat is known to be unable to keep the engine in the optimum range of temperatures with a supercharger. With a supercharger, you will notice temps above 200* very often.

Stant 14077 is a 170* thermostat and will maintain a cool engine despite whatever high performance runs you are doing on the supercharger. With a supercharger, expect to see temps of 185-190*

The TRD thermostat is a 160* and many people recommend running this ONLY if you do a very accurate tune and are trying for maximum performance. Be cautious with this one. You will often see the engine running around 175-180*.

Does anyone have both?

Soon! Meth kit is in the garage. The cooler thermostat, along with a transmission cooler, are good to help combat the extra heat of the supercharger. I have both of those installed as well. You can find a cooler t-stat on Rockauto.com for less than $10.

Hey guys, I need to rebuild my 2nd gen SC.

Do I do just the nose cone, or is the whole thing need to be serviced? Its very loud, and makes a bunch of strange noises (yet still boosts) lol.

Anyone got some part numbers for me for the kit(s)? I looked up some old ones and the post says $250~ yet the price I see online is now $700+, so would just like some clarification.

Thanks

Hey all,

How did you route the wideband wiring to the sensor? I've got on and starting to wire it all up but wondering where to pass through the wiring. Through the 4WD shifter boot or something?

I ran mine through the main ecu wire harness on passenger side. Take off the 2 nuts that hold the metal cover on and stick the wire through.

So, after literally 2 years of talking about it, I'M FINALLY ABOUT TO DO IT!!!

I picked up a used Snow Performance methanol injection kit with the stage 3 controller and 8 gallons of 50/50 boost juice. Really excited to get this up and running in the near future. Once I sell a bit more stuff I'm also buying a 2.1" pulley. Was a great deal since the guy selling it works at the shop for a private dealership and they sell off any aftermarket parts that show up on their vehicles. Only paid $200 for the whole deal, would have been about $800 new.

Basically this kit but with the stage 3 controller: Stage 1 Boost Cooler Water-Methanol Injection Kit | Snow Performance. Would it benefit anyone if I took some photos along the way and gave a little bit of how to's? Will still be another month or so until I install it.

Welp, hooked it all up, wired in the wideband, put on the 2.1 pulley on to find that the controller is busted... I'm so bummed. I guess that's why he was selling it so cheap. Time to order a new one I guess. I'll still come out ahead but it's dissapointing to get that far only to find it doesn't work right. The controller seems fine except that it supplies constant power to the pump so injects full-speed all the time, would have killed my engine if I hadn't tested it.

I'm needy this week :)

Those that have a wideband, it is normal in closed loop for it to jump around from 14-15 continually? I'm guessing that's my stock O2 sensor trying to keep it around 14.7 but thought I would ask.

Yeah mine will jump around like that as well. It's normal. Depending on throttle position and load. Your good

Possible to change the sparkplugs with the supercharger on?

I did a google search but couldn't find the answer to this question:

Is it possible to replace the driver side spark plugs with the supercharger on the engine? I installed the plugs prior to the supercharger being put on.

Yes, very possible. Jut remove the diagnostic port off the right side of the charger and remove the intake tube off the throttle body on left side for some more room to work with. You'll also want an extension or two to fit down into the holes. I find a magnetic finger/retrieval stick to be very helpful since once your unscrew the plugs they are tricky to get out.

All in all it's a very simple process. I recommend only doing one plug at a time so that you don't mix up the spark plug wires.

magnuson supercharger?

does anyone have any experience with the magnuson supercharger?
Installs in one day, does not need a 7th injector, Pending Calif legal.
I talked to them and they said they manufactured the TRD supercharger.
This is supposed to be an upgrade from the TRD

That is the exact same as the TRD supercharger, less the logo. Magnuson was the original supplier to TRD.

Make sure they actually give that CARB sticker, it better not be "pending" for the next 2 years or something. Either that or try and pass it as a TRD charger and get one of those stickers and the vacuum hose routing diagram. You'll need both to pass smog with it, just did it for the first time (for me, not the vehicle) last month.

Just got smogged. 2 years to go. There is a download from ICE in Neveda for a CARB sticker, Is this the same as the TRD or is it upgraded, How about the 7th injector. My smog shop will do install, so they will advise. thank you

7th injector will not pass if the tech has access to the CARB paperwork. You can use the search here to find out what is: https://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/devices/amquery.php. Hint: when you look at a list hit CTRL+F and search "4Runner".

I went with methanol injection because it is completely stand-alone. In 2 years I can remove the whole system leaving it stock, then put it back on :)

I'm pretty sure if you have this EO sticker (D-425-15) and take it to a not-so-on-top-of-things smogger, he wouldn't be able to tell the difference. It says upgrade kit comes with extra injector and "supercharger ECU". And just wrap all hoses in black conduit to not stand out. Worked for me 2 times so far. Maybe I'm lucky?

I need to go to Vacaville for my next smog check LOL. The guy I had was super picky and new CARB regulations like the back of his hand. Basically could quote stuff almost verbatum.

Have you ever had issues with the wideband? I just had mine welded on and installed and all that and the smog shop didn't think it would pass.

Well in fairness, I'm in the industry and the shop nearby doesn't ask any questions for me. If it runs clean, it passes.

As far as wideband, I don't see how that affects emissions. I'd try an arco gas station smog shop or something. Some of these smog guys used to get picked on in high school or something.

I've been thru all the hoops with the smog referee when I swapped my engine. Luckily I didn't have all the add-ons yet either....
