Yeah. I've got the 2.2 now. 7-8 psi at 4,100 elevation. 7th injector tuned for more fuel. I'm just going to ease into the 2.0 and see what it feels like. The jump to the 2.37-2.2 was nuts.

Anyone saying 312cc injectors work on a stock computer and are beneficial stop spreading lies and SEE BELLOW!

ok, yeah i just finished reading that on page 3 of your write up. like we talked about i just got the 2.0 installed today. I hate not being able to tune on the fly or having such a clunky system as the 7th is. Im also thinking about running 312 injectors like others are getting into with no controller.

Thanks if i have any more questions ill let you know. Im debating looking into your kit and making it work with my truck.

Who told them or decided that 312cc injectors without a controller would work!? That's not gonna run for shit and gas mileage is gonna blow ass and there is no added benefit. It's gonna be just as lean as it would be before open loop with the 312cc injectors... The computer tips into enrichment wayyyy too late so all they are doing is wasting fuel where it doesn't matter!

You need some sort of fuel management be it either an FIC 6, URD, or megasquirt. Especially if you change injectors. Unless you want to waste money on gas and see no gain at all...

Garunteed that truck was not running lean out of boost. It will run rich. I see 11.2-12.5 in open loop stock injectors and no computer anything more rich than 11.6 your robbing power anything more lean than 12.6 your getting detonation.

SC Newb Questions

New to SC. Have one on my '99 Runner, second generation black one. Like it...whines and makes it feel like a V8 up the climbs.

It was factory installed 30k miles ago roughly by a local dealership (the rig belonged to one of the service managers.) I did take it to a good reputable shop who confirmed it had the right plugs in it and, I just put a tranny cooler on for good measure.

I have yet to really dig into it yet though and I don't want to necessarily make it better...just want it optimized. A few questions for those of you more in the know:


1 - Since it was factory installed, would there have been any standard protocol mods for it done like fuel, thermostat etc.?

2 - It pings a bit at altitude and not really under load but when I'm cresting the top of a hill. One mech said it's pretty normal to do that a bit at altitude. Agree? I've been running 91 always. Someone said try 87?

3 - Again, at altitude it throws the CEL light on. Same mech said that's tough as it's an oxygen/fuel code. Offered little other explanation. Is that normal? Any ideas on why it might be throwing that?

4 - Though I'm pretty happy with it overall is 7th injector or a smaller pulley worth pursuing?

5 - Any other mods I'm missing? I do have a K&N airfilter and read something about that maybe being bad? Something about an FMU mod?

6 - I see these 3rd gen 4Runners with TRD boost gauges. I doubt I need one but googling shows none for sale anywhere. Are they still available?

7 - Anyone know a shop here in CO that would be a good resource for SC tuning etc.?

The bottom line is you will need to tune it. This requires some more money as well.

You will need a urd 7th injector kit or AEM FIC or basically and fuel and timing controller. The reason being is the stock ECM does not richen up the mixture with the supercharger and this causes detonation. Also a lean mixture melts cats.

Does anybody have there wideband and boost gauge set up in the glove box? I bought a Lotech gauge pillar and boy is it ugly. It doesn't fit right and probably requires some trimming. If not in the glove box where do you have it?

I recommend you do a lot of reading to understand the supercharger. If your getting fueling codes stay out of boost until solved. These engines are stout but you can still hurt thing like intake valves etc. Here's my answers to your questions:

1. NO

2. Supercharged cars require premium fuel. NEVER run 87. Pinging isn't normal EVER.

3. See what I said above. This is likely bad.

4. Definitely. 7th injector kit makes the truck run great and the 2.2" pulley adds noticeable power.

5. I wouldn't run a K&N, but others do. I just use a paper Purolator filter. FMU is the free fuel management. There's a fuel pressure regulator on the back of the stock engine. Tap that in to the supercharger's boost line and you'll get some extra and much needed fuel in to that engine.

6. Who knows. Get an Autometer boost gauge and call it a day. Gauges are cool, everybody knows that :naughty: I have a spare Autometer boost gauge I had them convert to green LED lighting if you want it. $70 shipped.

7. Tune it yourself. Any shop that you take it to will have little knowledge of how these work. They're completely different than most performance cars that have full tuning. Lots of tutorials on tuning these and it's a piece of cake.

Check to see if the fmu mod was done by the dealer. At a certain point Trd copied gadget and changed their instructions to include the "fmu mod". If they didn't that alone may fix your fuel delivery problems. Make sure you have 2 step colder plugs.... after all that if your still pinging, a meth injection kit is cheaper, easier to install, and just as effective in stopping ping as the 7th kit. Get one with a progressive controller that ramps up spraying as your boost increases (basically makes up for the fuel pump not keeping up with demands). Good luck, keep searching and reading, and you'll find out what works best for you.

Speedy answered it well, I would add a CEL light is not normal under any means. The stock ECU can handle the supercharger with no issues. The code probably has more to do with either a fouled sensor or vacuum leak. Try cleaning the MAF (search for it on the forums) or replace your upstream oxygen sensor, it may not be reading correctly anymore. $40 on Amazon.

Hello, first time here and I don't even own a 4runner. I do have an 02 supercharged Tacoma 5spd with the URD 7th kit.

I read this entire thread looking for an answer to my dreaded ping issues. Turns out my "magic" t-fitting that smooths the boost pulses to the AIC was completely plugged. No boost was even getting to the AIC. :wtf:

Anyway, fixed that and now the ping is gone. Previously I had up to 9 degrees of timing retard and nothing worked! Now I can actually start tuning.

Hope this helps someone else out there with ping issues.

That's a bummer. With the aic you can log onto your computer and read what psi the aic is seeing.

Their are different 7TH injector kits depending on the year of the 3.4 motor. Without telling anyone more specifics they may find themselves with the wrong kit for their motor.

The emails I got from Steve (gadget owner of urd). He says that they are all the same. Just the way the kit gets wired into the ecu is different.

How does the piggyback know how differentiate between a newer 4runner with a air fuel ratio sensor as opposed to a o2 sensor? They send out different voltage signals...
