The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

Hey guys, not sure if I should ask here but I'll give it a shot... so I was thinking of doing the SC soon but I don't really want to do the URD because I don't have a shop around that would be able to tune it for me, but I read that I can install Supra injectors instead of using the stock injectors to avoid the pinging.

Is this true? Can the Supra injectors eliminate the pinging also would it still matter if I did the URD after installing the injectors, any advice or help would be appreciated

I have a charger with no fuel mods and have zero pinging issues. Stock pulley.

Mines also been completely fine with no supporting mods, other than a dynamic tensioner. No pinging or fuel related issues since Ive owned it.

What spark plugs are you running? Also are there warning signs to look out for after installing the SC that would indicate a fuel issue etc... Thanks!
I just got me a SC, tore it apart to do a full rebuild and should be installing it soon! :D

I think pinging is your major sign. I doubt you'd run rich. Keep in mind that low octane gas is also a big culprit for pinging on a high compression engine. Mine pinged until I got through my first few tanks, even with octane booster.

I'm running IK22's for spark plugs. Very noticeable difference when changing those too.

Same here. I know exactly which gas stations in my regular area have 93 octane and only get gas at those stations. If I have to get 91 or less I get enough to get me to a better station so I can fill up with the higher octane.

Update: Adding that I live at 800 feet above sea level; but travel between 10 feet to 1500 feet above sea level on a pretty regular basis without issues. I have not had the 4Runner above 6,000 feet yet; but it was originally purchased and the s/c was installed in Colorado by the original owner.

Ok you guys convinced me... I'm getting a SC as soon as I can, I know these were designed to run on the stock fuel system but I saw way too many people complain about pinging, but now I'm sure I'll be fine with running 91octane

+1 here in California all we have is gender neutral :flypig: 91 Octane with ethanol, will this be safe without supporting fuel mods? Any California people with lead feet running this setup?

My supercharger is running great!

Thought I would post a little something about my experience. I installed my grey supercharger on my 96 limited over 1,000 miles ago. I am happy to report NOT ONE SINGLE ISSUE. When I picked up the supercharger (700$) it was in great shape and most of the hardware. I immediately sent it off to the High Speed Lab to get a full rebuild along with thermal coated rotors. It comes with a year warranty and they were great to work with. Anyway, this whole time for like 2 months straight all I did was read the forums and installation instructions about installing it. I talked with people who have already done it with what goes where. It helped so much to have everything I needed material and knowledge wise. I feel like it paid off. I read a post by someone that said, things are going to go wrong after installing the supercharger, it's natural haha. That scared me about doing it and sacrificing the reliability of my rig. That just doesn't have to be the case all the time. I live in denver and am running no fuel mods( yet) and have zero ping or stutter. I get my bung for wideband welded tomorrow.

I had mine without 7th for like 2 years but I did have pinging. HOWEVER mine is a manual and it would happen when I lugged it a bit like 2K RPMs. I think the autos would kick down a gear and then the pinging should subside. Most important thing is just to know your truck. If it pings at a certain rpm/load/throttle/gear, be smooth and easy and avoid those criteria. These are tough engines but it's best to be aware. Once you get over 3K RPMs, pinging should vanish entirely, even without fuel mods.

At least this is my experience.

What about gas that's 91 octane with E10 (10% ethanol?) That's usually what's available here in Omaha.

Yes and yes. My 4Runner likes 93 octane Oregon gas even more, but CA 91 isn't bad.

Also, keeping the ECT Power button on full time helps as well.

I have been reading this thread for some time trying to learn as much as possible before I order a sc for my 2001 5vz-fe. It has been VERY helpful!
Can I get some opinions on quality gauges (wideband a/f and boost) that won't break the bank? I would like to install them ahead of the sc installation.
Thanks for your help.

I have the UEGO wideband fail safe. It's pretty damn cool but ain't cheap at $300+

Pretty customizable with different plates and LED colors you set up on a laptop first. And it records too so you can hook up a laptop after install and with the AEM software (free) it will show you all kinds of stuff. Crazy advanced for our setups, admittedly. But isn't overkill the name of the game?

I can't speak for everyone nor everything they make but this unit is great. Another guy on here was doing a complete tunable piggy back deal that was made by AEM I think and he likes it.

Otherwise, I can only comment on my own experience
