The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

Anyone have the URD dynamic tensioner pulley? I need the bearing number. I'd like to order and have one ready before taking it apart.

Really just need the bearing number. I'll be honest, I bought the knock-off URD pulley off ebay without the bearing for like $12-15 shipped. I just havent had the time to measure and figure out what bearing it is yet.

You can get the whole pulley for $20 (Dayco 89007) or I believe the bearing is a 6203-2RS and can be found for $8. I can verify the bearing tonight when I get home.

Does anyone know where I can find another one of the longest mounting bolts for next to the throttle body?

I got one of em and one of the slightly shorter ones for next to the throttle cable bracket... Just picked up a used first gen and will need a bearing rebuild, but I think might be missing a couple things...

Also... Is there anything elseI should have with the dynamic tensioner other than what I have here?

One awesome thing... Looks like the nose cone has already been modified to be serviceable for future oil changes!

I cannot help with the bolts, as I was lucky enough to get mine complete.

However, your nose cone is modified, and you have a dynamic tensioner as well in your photo which is a couple hundred you wont have to spend for the TRD item as well. The bolts may have to be custom made

I'm not sure if its the same length but I ran into this problem when I picked up a used black supercharger cheap (without all the hardware). I ended up piecing everything needed and flipped it. I sourced the bolt through Fastenal: M8-1.25x170mm DIN 931 10.9 Plain Cap Screw SKU #0127131. It's not zinc coated but it works! Hope this is helpful.

double check that bolt...

It's the right length and thread pitch, but it's a large 13mm hex head and it won't be able to seat in the milled landing on the first gen SC as there are contoured ridges all around the area it would seat.... Same story with the only other "close" option I could find, a 12mm hex head with an even larger flange sticking out...

Soooo....

I contacted Magnuson told em the bolt I was missing for my installation and they have me a part# (PTR29-60031) which got no hits through local posts stores and was only available in a qty. of 50 per bag...

Called em one more time,, explained that I could only find it in bulk and if there's any way to just get one from them directly... He said sure 13 bucks plus shipping!

Sold!

LoL. Not letting one high priced bolt keep me from completing my rebuild and install!

I recently bought a 96 4runner - manual with locker and other goodies. One of the being a 1st gen supercharger that has been installed since 40k miles (currently at 235k) - no fuel mods because it has always been in Denver. The previous owner put a lot of money into the 4runner over the years and the head gasket recently blew (had been showing signs for awhile and the radiator finally cracked) and he decided to move on and I bought it. Below is how is currently stands - I am excited to get it back on the road.

I picked up a used engine from the junk yard (Yoda Jim’s in Denver). The engine is from a 99 and I will be switching over the supercharger as I install. I have a few questions as I tackle this.

1. Supercharger maintenance while I have it off. The super was completely rebuilt by TRD 60k miles ago. Therefore, I think an oil change is all that is needed. Can I buy a couple bottles of ACDelco supercharger oil to just drain and refill? I have not found any threads on how to do this so I assume it just be that easy.
Any other gaskets or anything on the super that I should replace as well? If so part numbers or where to order would be great.

2. Fuel regulator - reading the install manual for the 1st gen there is a fuel regulator that was originally part of the kit, but sounds like it was later deleted. Looks like my 96 has it installed. Should I delete it when I install on the new engine?

3. Throttle Body Gasket - looks like a mechanic replaced the TRD O gasket at some point with the regular one. Can I must cut the regular one to the shape of an O - or should I order the $35! gasket - PTR2960030?

4. Throttle Body - The 99 throttle body is different than the 96 because they got rid of the dashpot. Since the 99 is newer and lower miles I would like to run that throttle body. Can I run the 99 throttle body without issues?

Any other advice as I swap the newer engine in and install the supercharger?

Also, I live in Colorado and all the driving I do is 5,000+ feet (I live at 7,500 ft) - with no fuel mods. What spark plugs and thermostat should I use?

1) yeah oil change is probably all you'll need. I however do not have knowledge of what type/quantity. I got my oil from TRD for the 2nd gen supercharger...

2) not sure about regulator either. Sorry. I know for the black SC the stock one ges lined into the boost port.

3) I'm sure cuttin gasket is fine. But it won't be perfect. Depends on how anal you are.

4) throttle body is manual vs automatic. Not necessarily for years. Manuals have the dashpot to help hold the throttle open slightly during shifting. My engine is from a 98 automatic and has a computer of a 99 manual Tacoma. And it works fine I haven't noticed a difference. I am, however a little anal retentive and did want to try and find the actual manual throttle body wth dashpot just so that everything is like matched... Soooo if you decide to go with the 99 TB and it all works how you want, I'd be happy and excited to take that older manual TB off your hands... Just an idea.

Good luck

Cutting the gasket back is fine. I marked it from the grime line and took my time. That was done almost 60k miles ago without any issues. As for the ACDelco oil - yes and if I remember right you will not use all of it. I am about to buy some again to service my S/C this weekend.

I ordered a teflon from LCE Performance for around $10 shipped. I like it. You will have to adjust your cables a little since it is substantially thicker than the standard gasket. They also sell a paper gasket for $2.49.

I would do either of those options first before cutting your gasket considering the cost.

Thanks for the insight on the difference in throttle bodies being auto vs manual. I assumed it was because the 99 was newer. I will stick with my original then because Toyota probably put it there for a reason.

Do you know how much the supercharger takes? And do I have to take the nose all the way off or can I just remove the plug - drain and refill?

Thanks for the links! The teflon one looks good for the money.

I used the AC Delco supercharger oil, most aftermarket rebuild kits use it as well. It's a light weight but good heat resistance, works perfect. If I remember it comes in 4 oz. bottles, just pick up two. I vaguely remember 1 was not enough.

Since you have the charger off, remove plug, drain oil, replace oil. Done. Nothing else is needed since it was already rebuilt.
