The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

I will try to take some pictures this weekend. I still have to install my new decals so I want to be sure to include them in the pics. No pinging so far. Only the sweet whine of the s/c!!

Glad you approve. Posting up a before and after

Now it's time to install the unit!

Keep us posted

Is there any chance of you making one appropriate for the first gen supercharger?

Can't even find Google images for one, but I know they came with one...

The stock transmission cooler shares the radiator with the coolant, hotter coolant = hotter transmission fluid. That's why a transmission cooler is a good idea for us supercharged folks.

The supercharger does NOT play nice with the torque converter though. Since with a supercharger you're rarely locking up the converter in 3rd gear, it gets super hot on long climbs. Ask me how I know! Before I put in the cooler I was burning transmission fluid way too fast. I like camping in the Sierras but from where I live it's sea level to 7000 ft in about an hour. Heats up the tranny fluid like no other.

This is also why you are supposed to install a lower temp thermostat...

Yeah I'm sure I could but I would need an idea of what it's supposed to look like. Even hand sketching something would work. Is the first Gen SC that much different image-wise?

Basically the only diagram I've ever even seen for it was likely not an original trd image, and had even been highly modified from it's own original form with notes and revisions... And even then... Doesn't match the equivalent of what I have... LoL

But here's what I've seen before.

Oh ok I see. The only major differences I can see are where some of the connections are. What I would do is just rearrange some of the connections. And I probably would have to make the sticker a bit bigger to be able to fit the 4wd VSV system in there if you wanted. I'd love to be able to draw out the whole sketch of the detailed supercharger but it takes me a long time. I would just keep the block shape the same as I did in previous posts. If you get serious, pm me a picture of your current underhood decal and I can work something up when I get time.

Here are a few pictures of my install.

Thanks Nick! It won't stay that way for long.

I was pushing 7 psi yesterday morning but only 6.2 in the afternoon. My guess is because it was cool in the morning with dense air and warm in the afternoon.

I would agree with your guess. I think 7 is like absolute maximum on stock pulley. What a difference though

Yeah, the previous owner had the TRD one already installed and it still fried. These superchargers put out a lot of heat, there's no way around it.

Debatable. I can run 0-60 runs for a half hour straight on my stock thermostat and don't even have the needle budge from mid range... That's even pushing 9psi...

But I'm also doing water methanol injection direct into the supercharger.

The needle doesn't budge really at all, it's a bit of a "dummy" gauge if that makes sense. It won't start to move until the coolant hits past boiling point, some members on here have monitored it until the needle does move. If you have a bluetooth reader or scangauge you can monitor the temps.

When I got mine, I was seeing temps pushing 200+ degrees with the stock cooler and the cooler thermostat on flat ground, which is why the transmission fluid got cooked due to negligence.

What made you decide to do this complete arsenal of parts outside of the stock that came with the rig, besides the BEST setup for the BEST results. I know as anyone who builds something for performance if you don't have it perfect from start to end you will not get the best results. I'm not after doing all of these extra things I've read through the forum post. If I do it, i'll do the base SC with 7th Injector Kit, if I do it.

Though from reading your knowledge I can see why you went this way and completely understand. So back to my question, sorry got sidetracked in my head, did you plan from the start to always end up here or just started in one direction and went to this point of methanol injection into the SC.

Thank you.

I have a Bluetooth obd adapter and the torque pro app. It shows temp on the real time gauges screens. And 200+ degrees is still normal operating temps. A thermostat is set to open early well before it's upper range, it's over 210-220 that it's starting to become a REAL problem, and even then, if you have the proper ratio of radiator fluid to water, your not even boiling still, as the boiling point is raised with coolant. That's the whole point.

I've seen these gauges show REAL movement in the temp ranges above 210, which is where you are stating to move outside of normal operating temp range, so it's definitely indicated when things are moving into the "dangerous" range.

Even with a supercharger, if you are having prolonged temps over 210, you have cooling system issues independent of the supercharger.

I planned to do it, but wasn't sure if I'd have the spare money to get there so did it sort of in stages. Where I am at right now isn't perfect by any means, the methanol injection is a safeguard to raise octane and keep pre-detention at bay.

When it's all said and done, this is what I'll have on there:

TRD supercharger (installed)
2.1" pulley (installed)
Methanol injection kit (installed)
Doug Thorley Headers (installed)
AFR gauge (installed)
190 lph fuel pump (installed)
Transmission valve body shift kit (installed)
AEM F/IC 6
330 cc injectors
Smaller meth injector nozzle & tune it better
Dyno tuned
Performance Camshafts (maybe)

I'm pretty sure this will make much more power than just a 7th injector kit plus the supercharger. The 7th injector doesn't spread nicely to all 6 cylinders, which is why I'm going to up the injectors instead. The max RWHP you can get on just charger + 7th injector is 240, I'm looking to blow that out of the water. I'm working with a professional Toyota engine builder who has a shop nearby and this was the route he recommended as well. Excited to see how it works out!

Are you buying a used supercharger or the complete kit? There's nothing needed for the complete kit, if buying a used one see the first page on what's needed and where you can get it.

Prefer a new one/complete kit just because I'm throwing in a low-milage motor in the next couple weeks, so I'd rather have all fresh stuff.

Interesting. I just re-read the entire SC thread as i've been literally in bed for the last 24 hours. Also read through my FSM & my SC kit from URD (instruction I had aquired somewhere...) and applied it throughout my FSM for better understanding. Depending on how my recovery goes...well I'll leave it at that...

So after reading more if I go with the SC i will purely go with the following from URD and stop there. Magnuson SC + 7th Injector kit, it's all I really want as I just want a little more power for those 80mph high-ways and sand/snow outings. My dad says I should look at gears but not as interested in re-doing all my gears but who knows..

Thank you for the response, was interesting to see why people did what they did. I understand why but not as interested in that maximum performance as in what the base provides (good enoguh for me till the money tree falls into my back yard..)
