The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

I'm attempting to finish my 7th injector setup that I never started. I didnt know about the plug and play harness at first. Never saw anyone post about it.

I tried calling URD this past week to get confirmation on "FULL SERVICE PCU WIRING" - I presume that's URD wiring the harness to the module for a fee.

If I already have the module, and just need the harness - I should choose "SKIP IT" for the drop down menu option yes?

https://www.urdusa.com/type-d-plug-n-play-harness/

Any input is appreciated.

You posted in the other post asking the same, correct?

Interesting. I just re-read the entire SC thread as i've been literally in bed for the last 24 hours. Also read through my FSM & my SC kit from URD (instruction I had aquired somewhere...) and applied it throughout my FSM for better understanding. Depending on how my recovery goes...well I'll leave it at that...

So after reading more if I go with the SC i will purely go with the following from URD and stop there. Magnuson SC + 7th Injector kit, it's all I really want as I just want a little more power for those 80mph high-ways and sand/snow outings. My dad says I should look at gears but not as interested in re-doing all my gears but who knows..

Thank you for the response, was interesting to see why people did what they did. I understand why but not as interested in that maximum performance as in what the base provides (good enoguh for me till the money tree falls into my back yard..)

You should start with just the SC. I too wasn't looking for a ton of extra power. Just more for pass driving. And I feel it's perfect as is. No need to mess anymore with it. Unless pinging becomes an issue...

Yeah that's what my research was showing also. Though most likely i'll get the 7th injector kit to avoid any lean/pinging issues. I'm not going to change the stock pulley, Methanol Injection, Upgrade Throttle Body, Exhaust and we could go on. I love reading the threads of people who did all of these. It's nice to see someone else who appreciates the vehicle for what it is or MADE into.

Understand why they do it and the benefits of it all. But you are exactly right Hepar, Just want that extra "oof".

As much reading as I did yesterday I could build it all with my eye's closed. Kinda sad that just because someone doesn't have it they get jumped on. Another reason I rarely post and prefer the lurk and update my adventure thread.

/me sighs.

Thank you again Hepar !

Hey guys, might need some help from you guys. Just recently installed a brand new trd s/c in my 2001 4runner 4x4 and now having some issues. Everything is kept stock for now, so no fuel mod yet (hopefully coming soon). So I had it done at a local moms and pops shop and it went fairly smooth except for some vacuum line routing that I actually had to review with the mechanic. Long story short, everything seems to be routed correctly and idle has been pretty smooth but boost seems rather low (currently shopping for a boost gauge). After a two hour road trip the transmission seems rather hotter than I could remember and I’m having a hard time getting up to speed while revving rather high to gain a very minimal speed after going 60mph (over 3.5k and only getting up to 70mph). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Couple things:

1) triple check all hoses and connections. And then check again

2) make sure rear bolt is tightened all the way (SC-to-intake). This may also flag a p0171 lean code.

3) did they install the little check valve for the "air assist ststem" under throttle body? That gives funky results if skipped

I’ll give the hoses another look tomorrow. As far as the check valve, according to the installation instruction, it’s not needed for 2001 and newer. Is this something that I should consider trying? Btw, I currently have a plug on it.

(Skip this step for 2001 and newer 4Runner) Cut the hose leading to the IAC valve connector at the location shown, and insert the kit’s one‐way valve into the straight part of the hose. The black end of the valve (see arrow on figure 25 and diagrams at the end of this manual) is closest to the throttle body.

It's worth a shot for a $5 part. Read somewhere where a Tacoma guy had weird issues until he installed the valve. Pulling his hair out.

As far as a plug, what do you mean? On the older ones There's a "Y" hose from intake manifold to throttle body so even without a check valve all 3 ends of the hose go somewhere. Bottom line with yours is if it ran great before and runs poorly after NEW SC install then something is missing somewhere.

So running around looking for the one way check valve with not luck. Any recommendations on where to find one or the part number? Tried
PTR26-35042 but it’s been discontinued for a while now.

Call Magnuson, they are $5 and great customer service. You can also get the TRD O gaskets through them for $5 or $10.

I'm guessing you already have this, but you want the hose routing like on Page 19:

http://www.lcengineering.com/LCInstructions/89-89-34-003_Rev1_Toyota_34_Magnuson.pdf

Also see the notes on page 17 which apply to your vehicle.

If you are able to post photos we can verify the hose routing. I would also look for vacuum leaks.

Oh I see the plug now. The newer engines with fly-by-wire throttle don't use the "air assist system". Scratch my check valve idea off the list...

But again, if it ran fine before, something isn't grooving the way it needs to. Did the vacuum actuator on top get messed up or bent or something during install?

Grasping and straws for you

Alright guys, here are some pictures I managed to take before the rain hits. 2001 4runner 4x4 for reference. I did end up ordering the one way check valve. BTW, thanks for the overwhelming response guys. Keep them coming, I just want to drive the damn thing already without any worries.

Fairly certain this hose is the one in need of the check valve.

Someone with the newer style throttle body may be able to confirm

Your problem sounds like it's NOT SC related... Especially because you aren't throwing any codes typical with supercharger issues, and those pictures show proper vacuum hose routing.

I almost wonder if your having an issue with the throttle body and maybe the tps.

It sounds to me like your trans isn't shifting properly. Deff shouldn't be at 3500 rpm @70mph in 4th gear with the torque converter locked up...

You did check and make sure that overdrive wasn't turned off, right?

Overdrive is definitely on. I have an existing code before s/c (evap), so havent ran the code since install. I’ll try to do that later.

Sooo.... You have a CEL and problems.... But didn't check it cause the light was already on?

First thing you always do is check the codes... Otherwise it's just a shot in the dark...

Okay guys, these are the codes that it's throwing:

C1201 - Engine Communication Circuit
C1223 - (ABS control system Malfunction) Replacing with a new brake switch
C1249 - (Stop Lamp Switch Circuit) Replacing with a new brake switch
P0171 - Bank 1 System Too Lean
P0325 -Knock Sensor 1 Circuit (Bank 1)
P0330 - Knock Sensor 2 Circuit (Bank 2)

Should I start with replacing the knock sensors?
