You obviously know something about the subject of making videos. I'll give you that.
Everybody has their own style, Chris Fix, Eric the Car Guy, Engineering Explained, Ratchets and Wrenches, etc, etc. We're not them, and we're not you. We're Timmy the Toolman and Sean. Our videos are geared towards the ABSOLUTE BEGINNER. We hold people's hands and walk them through the job. Doing this takes time. An experienced mechanic or DIY doesn't need this type of detail but a an inexperienced DIY mechanic will benefit from the extra detail our videos offer. We want our videos to be a one-stop-shop for people. We show you the job in detail and include things like part numbers, torque values, special tools needed, and links to helpful information like this forum thread.
Anyway, I've talked long enough. I don't need to convince anyone that our style of making videos is a good one. The feedback we're getting is overwhelmingly positive and we seem to be picking up new subscribers faster and faster so I think we're on the right track and putting out a good product. You should try watching the video. You just might like it.
Not knocking you man, just offering some constructive feedback. Do it how you want, but I'll wager people are gonna see 1:20 on the time and move on. I'll disengage as I really don't care how you do your work. If you wanna discuss video production start a new thread and tag me.
but I'll wager people are gonna see 1:20 on the time and move on.
I'd actually think the opposite. If I was looking for a video on a SC install, seeing the 1:20 time would tell me that it's most likely a very detailed video. If I was looking for a video on someone giving a review of a SC, I'd run from an hr and 20 min video.
And not that it makes that much of a difference, but that's coming from someone who works in video production.
Well, I have content way longer than 20 min, but the "content" is broken out in to Part1 Part2 Part3, etc. But to each their own. I have no more to add here, if it's working for mtbtim then it works for him. Most content on Youtube is actually less than 20 minutes but is pretty mindless if we're honest. My metrics would suggest folks are bored while sitting on the toilet and surfing YT rather than watching a feature length film LOL.
I've got a buddy that pretty much makes a living on youtube (and a good one) and I'm shocked that he has 100K+ subscribers with the jibberish he produces but is what it is I reckon.
awwww man I missed everyone getting fussy about their youtube videos and I didn't get a chance to chime in with mine!! haha! ahhh its all good internet fun, eh?
Completely agree. The vast majority of our work is website user content and we pretty much max out at 10min. I'd say most of our stuff is in the 5-7min range. People's attention spans are getting shorter and shorter too.
I would agree that it could benefit from being broken up into parts. You could maybe have the belt removal and intake manifold removal as separate parts since they would be useful for other jobs and could be beneficial as stand alone videos. Then have the installation of the SC as its own video.
I'd say if you keep doing these videos, buy a lav mic. You can find decent ones for reasonable prices and they go a long way with narrated audio.
You just need to be open to suggestions dude. No more no less. Viewers are your customer. Don't assume everyone who "might" watch your videos will actually perform the task the video is describing. In this case, it's a supercharger that costs almost as much as the 20 year old vehicle it's being installed on. Producing these is time consuming so I get the defensiveness, but the folks here are providing good advice from a viewer perspective.
Good luck with the channel.
Shameless plug, my next one will be a HID projector retrofit, 4 years too late to be relevant lol.
And Dude, you have to understand just because we don't like your suggestion that we don't listen to and implement suggestions from our viewers. People complained about bad audio and we added an external mic to fix it. People complained about video quality and we upgraded our camera to HD quality. People complained about shaky footage and we've tried really hard to stabilize our shots.
We already have comments from people that said they are going to watch it even though they don't plan on ever installing one. They just like to watch and learn.
You're suggestion of much shorter videos would completely change the quality of our videos. Sean and I agreed when we started doing this YouTube gig that we didn't want to leave people guessing in one of our videos. This is why we go above and beyond to clearly document how we get a job done. It's OUR style and we're going to stick with it. You do what you like with your videos and we'll do the same with ours. Can we be done now?
So your viewers had to tell you to upgrade mics and quit producing shaky video....ooooook. I was trying to be helpful but you've come off like a know it all and I guess I shouldn't be surprised, it is the internet after all. If you had hundreds of video items and 20 thousand subscribers I'd not have bothered, but thought you might take some feedback from someone a bit more seasoned.
Content doesn't have to be 90 minutes to be technically thorough. There's nothing new or ground breaking about what you're doing.
Yep we're done.
Hey hey now Speedy and mtbtim let's take this moment to calm down and reflect upon the fact that neither one of you have an accurate vacuum diagram to go along with all the supercharged banter...
Lucky for you guys I happen to make them
(Forgive the poor screenshot imaging, final results are significantly more crisp)

So instead of throwing Internet punches, throw some PM's to me about how badly you'd like to have these. (Shameless and smooth if I may say so)
But seriously, it's a necessity if you're a stickler for details
4Reak is right! I have his decal on my ride and it looks great.
BTW I watched the whole video and you did a great job!! Don't worry about the naysayers. Haters gonna hate.
I wish I had it a few months ago when I put my s/c on.
