The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

You can find other peoples gas mileages but I can give you mine for reference:
2000 Auto 4WD, TRD Supercharger (Black), URD 2.2 Pulley and 7th Kit. Currently have a knock sensor CEL and without any experience of other 4Runners, I don't think everything is running at 100%. I still manage on average 220miles on a full tank (93) of combined highway/urban driving, typically 13gallons per fillup - on average that's pretty much bang on 17mpg. Highway only I get 20+, and as I said I'm sure there's room for improvement in my setup as I dont think it's running perfectly (tune etc).

Speaking of - can anybody recommend a shop in MD that is familiar with working on a S/Cd 4runner - especially on that has the URD add-ons? I have the history of this truck and I believe Gadget himself has looked it over/helped set it up according to the previous owner.

I'm going to be a due a timing belt soon so am prepping for a bit of an overhaul, including replacing/updating sensors, gaskets, any cracked lines, and a supercharger rebuild + whatever else is needed. Would then require it to be set-up and tuned properly. I can even drive to the URD offices but I don't think they have a workshop, I believe they're just a parts seller? Anybody recommend a place to go for all this? Thank you!

Check out tuning shops in your area. Your average independent mechanic shop will know how to fix the engine up, but will know nothing of how to tune it. However, your average tuning shop can tune it, and they know a thing or two about fixing engines! Look for reviews on places that do engine builds and tuning on a dyno and give them a call.

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a new Magnuson unit as the ones I'm finding used are still asking quite a bit and I prefer something with a warranty that I don't have to worry about rebuilding.

Does the Magnuson kit include everything?

This is going on a '98 with 250k miles FWIW.

Yes, the Manguson is the same exact thing as the original TRD kit, minus the TRD logo. You'll find all the hardware needed included in the kit.

When I talk to magnuson they tell me to call URD who of course want to sell me the 7th injector setup. How necessary is that for someone near the coast?

Put the supercharger on first and then decide. Many find the supercharger alone to be plenty of fun power. 7th injector is an optional upgrade, not necessary though.

Since charging my 3rd gen, I've been getting horrible gas milage. I've done some searches on here and have tried several things before posting. I'm currently getting 9.5-10 mpg in the city and 11-12 hwy driving.

Below is my setup.

2001 Auto 4WD

3" lift

33" tires (bfg)

New Maf sensor

New Upstream 02 sensor (denso)

Stock TRD Supercharger (about 15k miles ago)

ARB Bumper w/ winch

Front and mid skids

Armored Rear bumper with swing out 5th wheel.

Stock fuel management

No CEL

Is this normal? What are you guys getting? I've seen multiple guys with my setup still getting close to 16-17miles per gallon on the hwy.

2000 SR-5
185,000 miles
3-4” lift on 255/85 ST-MAXX.
Supercharger as fitted from the dealership

I get 13-15 city. 16-18 freeway (75-80mph) and up to 19/20 on 2 lane highways at 55-70mph staying out of boost by turning off the OD for any hills

The way you drive effects your mileage significantly more when you have forced induction. I drive conservatively and make every effort to stay out of boost unless I NEED the power. Having a boost gauge really helps in getting the best mileage.

Counter to the convention for naturally aspirated engines, higher RPM in a SC’ed vehicle is more conservative than positive intake pressure. The relationship to fuel savings between higher RPM and throttle position/boost pressure is NOT linear. Raising your rpm by 20-25%
saves more fuel than going from negative intake pressure to running any boost pressure above 0.

At 5-6 psi, you’re consuming fuel significantly faster than going from 2200RPM to 3000 RPM.

If I drive with more skinny pedal I can get mileage as bad as 10-12mpg

carson toyota says its selling the trd badged gen 4 part number PTR29-89020 for 2695.50 is it real? i thought finding the discontinued ones with the trd badge new was difficult or maybe im mistaken? my truck is a stock 99 with 150k and i will be charging it to ease my depression.

More heat, more hammer, soaked overnight in PB blaster...

Let the rebuild commence...

thanks for sharing this with us Tom!!!

That's the real deal, but I'm guessing they are out of stock and forgot to remove the kit from their online store.

ok SC Gurus,

Just got my runner back from installing the 7th injector kit but its throwing a check engine light for the knock sensor and shes running rough like if its in limp mode. Could that be the culprit from keeping the vehicle from running great? Brought it back to the shop for them to replace both sensors and harness. I'm wondering if there's anything else that's going to keep it from running perfect.

your help is appreciated.

ok SC Gurus,

Just got my runner back from installing the 7th injector kit but its throwing a check engine light for the knock sensor and shes running rough like if its in limp mode.

The limping is a telltale sign that it’s indeed a sensor or harness. It’s your cars way of keeping it out of the high rpm range where the knocking is likely to occur.

It seems that as more and more people are installing superchargers on these 4Runners which are getting older by the day, more are encountering knock sensor issues. I think the brittle harness wires are to blame for most of the woes.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (I have not installed the URD unit) but I do not think it interfaces at all directly with the knock sensors, only the crank and camshaft sensors to pull timing. A knock code should indeed only mean that the knock sensor and/or pigtail needs to be replaced. You mentioned you just got it back, if a shop did it I'd send it back and let them know the CEL light is on.

thats good to know...crossing my fingers thats the culprit so i can be all smiles after this. thanks

yeah just got it back the shop was aware of the code when i first dropped it off but they reset it after they installed the URD kit and it didn't come on when they drove it around for testing which they said was very little cause of the weather lately. Like I mentioned above, I hope that's the culprit so I can be all smiles after this.

I found a couple people having issues with the sensor and SC in the past when i did a quick search but none ever came back if it solved their issue. Ill report back when i get the runner back from them. Thanks again.

My knock sensors went bad shortly after installing my supercharger too. Not sure why this happens. Definitely replace the sensors and harness.

Exact same issue here, had a P0325 code for a while now (S/C and 7th kit). I'm planning on getting a timing belt change soon so plan to change both sensors and harness at the same time.

Guys I need some help please. I have the 2nd (4th) Gen unit. Unsure how many miles it's been on the truck and while I'm refreshing everything (as above) I want to get this rebuilt also.

1 - My understanding is it just needs a nose cone rebuild? Do I need to anything more?

2 - Per page 1 of this thread, I need Nose Cone Kit $228, Part No. PTR29-35042. From googling, I can't find this kit for less than $700! Is that the price these days!?

3 - Who provides supercharger rebuild services these days? From looking at the nose cone rebuild guide on page 1, (if that's all that's needed per question 1), it seems relatively straightforward. I'm not mechanically inclined enough to try this alone though, can I supply the kit to mechanic for them to do?

4 - Bit of a vague question, but after I've had all the above work done (general engine refresh, timing belt + pump, knocks sensors + harness, + anything else I may end up refreshing + s/c rebuild), do I need to get a tuning shop to look everything over? My 3rd gen came with everything installed by the previous owner (including 7th kit and 2.2 pulley) so I'm trying to work my way backwards to understand everything!

Thank you :)

EDIT: OH and while I'm at it! The black coating is totally flaking off the s/c and making my engine bay look like ^&"£"£* - anyone re-finished their s/c paint? I'm thinking its best to do this while the truck is apart and all the work is getting done!

I'm pretty sure this is a link to the nose cone, but someone else definitely should chime in. As well as I think it's just the nose cone, so to do the swap, you need a few more parts. Also not exactly sure which parts those are.

Thanks for that! I did stumble across that page while looking to order an oil filter and it seemed to be the oil kit for the nose cone only - not sure though!

That could be the case, but I'm finding things that say it's the complete kit, just using the old part #. Should be pretty easy to give them a call to see what it includes. From a bit more research, sounds like it should include everything needed. I may snag one and do a preventative rebuild this spring/summer if it is indeed the entire nose cone.

Knock sensors on their way out, with supercharger...what else to do while in there?

1. Nose cose rebuild and 2 bottle of GM Supercharger oil (Amazon) if the kit doesn't come with it already. The Toyota nose cone kit does. Should also come with some red locktite too.

2. Toyota discontinued all TRD supercharger parts a few years ago. However, Magnuson started making them again so just order directly from them: MAGNUSONPRODUCTS.COM

3. All you need is the nose cone kit. If you want, you can repack the needle bearings in the back (I'm going to do this the next time I do a rebuild) with some grease, there's a specific type that is used but I can't remember which it is. Nose cone kit alone will do just fine though.

4. As long as the tune is good and you like it, drive happy. If you don't have an auxiliary wideband sensor installed with a gauge to read the AFR, you can't tune it anyway.

Ha, that's hilarious that Tracy Toyota has the cheapest prices! Tracy is such a dead-end city lol. Used to live there.
