Take a good look at the radiator. If the plastic has taken on an olive drab hue, consider replacing it. I dodged a bullet, running my original rad for almost 20 years. If it lets go, it can trash your transmission. After I pulled my old one out, I could break pieces off the filler neck with my hands it was so brittle.

If it has a moonroof, there are two drains at the front corners that are obvious when the glass is slid back. See if you can get a gentle blast of compressed air through them, they like to clog up.

Lastly, there is a breather cap on top of the rear diff that is supposed to relieve internal pressure while keeping the elements out. If these get clogged, pressure in the diff can build up enough to blow out one or both of your rear axle seals.

These are all very preventable disasters. Look up a member here "mtbtim" who can also be found on YouTube under the name "Timmy The Toolman," who has fantastic how-to videos covering almost every nut and bolt of the 3rd gen 4runner.

I’ve been searching through threads trying to decide between 4th gen 4Runner rear shocks or LC80 Tokico black shocks to pair with LC 7.5 wrap shocks. I don’t have any added armor or cargo weight. There’s a lot of mixed reviews which is understandable since ride quality is very subjective, and it’s been difficult to find anyone with no armor or added weight with 7.5 or 8 wrap coils.

I've been running the 7.5 wraps w/ tokicos for a couple years / ~10k miles. I have a bit of added weight from a platform/fridge, but have also removed the rear seats, seatbelts, metal supports, etc. so it probably is ~50lb extra at most. I find it really stiff for daily road bumps compared to stock springs + stock or 4600s shocks. It feels decent on bigger whoops.

I'm sure your research has shown this, but when loaded up for a trip with 500lb+, it rides like a dream.

I'm planning on switching this out. The stiffness + excessive rake is too compromising of ride quality IMO. My thought process is to first try a shorter spring with a similar spring rate as the 7.5 wraps so the tokico sits more towards the middle of its travel and see how that goes. Then if it still rides harsh, I'll switch the shock to something more progressive—probably fox or king.

I cannot understand what you want to do. The lower plastic section of the bumper (valence) is attached to the upper chrome (or painted metal) section of the bumper, which then bolts to the 4Runner.

Do you want a non-fat-lip bumper? That is a fairly easy swap...

Right. You just need a complete '96-'98 Front bumper. Remove your current bumper and crash bar (and maybe mount plates? not sure). Bolt on the 'new' old bumper. '96-'98 had no crash bar at the front of the frame, adding it is why the bumper got 'fat' - to make room.

None of the parts between the two are compatible except for the mounting locations, so you need the complete unit.

Here are the part numbers.

I just replaced mine because of a little accident and decided to go with aftermarket parts because I was having trouble sourcing a clean original one. It was a pain in the ass to source all the parts and assemble, recommend getting a used one if you can. Ended up being $500 in parts, but you might not need as much I had to replace. I can provide more help if you do want to go the aftermarket route.

Hello first time using this hope I’m asking my question the right way or in the right post. Sorry in advance on how I ask my question not much of a car guy. So my problem is my 1999 sr5 2wd is making this gurgling sound that started small and has gotten louder and you can only hear from inside the car around the gas and brake area and rumbles the car when it does. Last Monday while driving at a light the car shook and completely shut off on me 3 times at stops luckily i made it home and noticed a loud sound of air leaking from the gas tank that lasted well over 5 mins after I parked and turned off the car . I took it to a mechanic and they thought maybe it needed a new fuel filter so I replaced it with a new OEM filter. But even after replacing it the sound is still there and the mechanic said he couldn’t tell where it wash coming from if it wasn’t the fuel filter so I took it to another mechanic and he also said he couldnt tell what it could be they dropped the tank to see if there was any cracks or damage and said everything looked fine. I’m pretty frustrated and now uncomfortable driving it knowing that it can turn off when it wants. I tried to video it but the audio doesn’t do justice . Hopefully what I typed sounds like something some one has experienced and can lead me to check something else or maybe point me to a mechanic in Las Vegas that specializes on Toyotas not at the actual dealership. i have a 2000 4Runner sr5, my engine used to leak due to a failed valve cover gasket, it wasn’t leaking for a little then I got a smell of a slight leak.



Currently there is a little on just the drivers side so was looking if anyone has any ideas

They have rubber washers for a reason, not to mention the bolts tend to
come loose on their own.

Make sure the bolts are snug, the do tend to come loose. Watch the Timmy the Toolman video on the valve covers for lots more info (3.4L video):

Use OEM parts are often better than new aftermarket, even after 25 years...

edit: Make sure you look for a '96-'98 bumper, not a '99-'02 bumper.

2nd gen rear sway bar end link swap

I'm looking to swap the 2nd gen rear sway bar end link to the front of my 3rd gen after lifting. My local pick n pull has a few 2nd gens, so I'm planning on just going there to grab some used rear end links. Are all 2nd gen rear end links the same? E.g. does it matter if I grab them off of a 2wd or a 4wd?

however, 48131-35350 seems to be discontinued. and the rear spring part number looks like it doesn’t exist on camelback’s site. wanted to do the 99talls with bilstein 4600s

any insight? i have a 00 highlander, would like to get it back to factory height, maybe a smidge higher. have also been thinking ome 880/906s with 5100s but am worried about it being too tall. thanks!

Your front springs are probably still near stock height - no need to do springs up there. All of the lift numbers for springs are generally measured from the center of the hub to the fender lip - and 'stock' is considered 20". See where you are and go from there.

The 2906 rears will put you at or right above 22" in the rear.

the first time I did talls I used oem...but that one is long gone ( totaled) my current one I went cheap and got the talls from rock auto. That was years ago and I no longer have the part numbers, they have held up fine. I paired them wiht KYB gas adjust. Maybe someone will chime in on the rock auto numbers

Spidertrax wheel 12mm to 14mm conversion adapters

Got a great deal on some 2024 Lands Cruiser 18's with Michelin tires and I am researching what I need to do to fit them on my 3rd Gen 01. Current setup is KMC wheels with Toyo Open Country RT 275/85/16 but these are quite slippery on wet roads. Looking to add the Spidertrax WHS036K to convert from 12mm to 14mm studs to fit the Landcruiser tires. My question is, does anyone know if this will this work on the rear wheels/drums as well? Am about to send Spidertrax support an email but wondering if anyone here has installed them or any of the spacers on the back wheels?

No issues in the rear. No calipers to clear. Drum faces are flat.
