Hate to start a new thread for such a simple question:

If I am swapping rear axles (which entails removing rear brake line fittings), am I OK to just bleed the rear brakes when I re-assemble?

Or do I have to bleed all 4 corners

You can bleed just the rears as long as the master didn't go empty. I use silicon plugs to cap the brake lines off whenever I have to remove brake lines. Amazon.com: 40 Pc 1/16" to 3/4" High Temp Silicone Rubber Tapered Plug Kit - Powder Coating Custom Painting Supplies: Automotive

I am aware that my valve covers are leaking. They have been for about the past month, but I've never seen oil under the truck to this degree. I plan to repair the valve cover gaskets and all the associated parts first. But is it normal for this amount of oil from a VCG leak?

I first noticed it on my skid plate. I have taken some photos. But can anyone give some input what might be the common causes for this?

Yes, it's possible that all of that is from your valve covers, over an extended period of time leaking. It's rare that these oil pans leak, so Im betting that once you do your VCGs and clean everything up well, you'll notice that it stays clean under there. Start with the VCGs

Parts are on order, really hoping it cures this mess!
 
Bought a ‘96 4Runner 4x4 SR5, glad to be in the community.

It has some oil leaks which I’m figuring out tomorrow with oil dye. However I can’t figure out where the car’s squealing is coming from.

The squeal happens when these factors are met:
(1) I’m going 25+ MPH
(2) I let off of the pedal OR
(3) I’m barely on the pedal

It squeals like crazy! Is it belts/bearings or could it be something else??

The drive belts specially the AC belt has been known to squeal. Make sure they are in good shape and tight.

I’m pretty sure I have a rear main leak. Just did valve covers and resealed the oil pan. The top end is dry now, but there is still a slow drip from the bell housing.

Does the whole trans have to be taken out, or is there room to slide it back a bit to access the RMS?

You'll have to remove the flex plate so yeah.

I can relate to all of this. I also do all my own work. The way I see it, Buying a specialty tool that costs as much as paying to have the work done just adds to my knowledge and tools arsenal.
 
I have a 2002 t4r. I currently working on the rear wheel bearings/seels. I am baffled by a strange problem. I can't get one of my axles to slide BACK INTO THE SPLINES! Please Help!

I have the 3rd member out because I wanted eyes on the spline when trying to slide it in.

The other axle slides on both sides without issue.

The problematic axle is the one that came out and has not been dropped/damaged. There is NO visible damage.

The problematic axle is the one that came out and has not been dropped/damaged. There is NO visible damage.
The axles slide into the 3rd member. You have to have the rear differential fully installed before installing the rear axle shafts.

I fully understand this. I'm trying to diagnose why the axle won't slide in.

You said you have the differential out while trying to slide the axle in correct?
 
Sounds like there is some sort of damage to the axle shaft end. If it came out of the 3rd member and then you did bearings and retainers and no longer fits the splines, than the splines on the axle must be damaged, maybe you can clean it up with a small set of files. Maybe when you did the work you deformed the end some how.

What was your method to do the bearings, abs rotor and retainer's?.

Yes because I wanted to eliminate the possibility of the abs/retaining ring be in the way and to confirm it is the splines not sliding. Everything I searched suggested the ring was not seated properly. I already have the entire housing on the bench so it didn't take much to remove the 3rd and have a look.

I think you must be correct about this. I was very careful not to damage the splines but I did not cover them with anything while I was using the press.

I did use a file and that didn't work. I cleaned it very thoroughly with a wire brush on an angle grinder.

Post a picture of your abs ring and retainers of that axle
