I have a ECU/electronics question if anyone has knowledge in this area. Im preparing for a manual and 4WD swap on my 2002 SR5. I'm using a '95 Tacoma with manual hubs as a parts car. My issue is this - the stock 2002 4Runner ECU will have a permanent CEL with the manual trans. I'm also concerned that there might be fuel injection issues since the ECU thinks its still an auto. As I understand it, the 95 Tacoma ECU wont work, even if I repin the 4Runner wiring harness, because the 01/02 has a partial electronic throttle control. The usual choice for this swap is a 03/04 manual 4WD V6 Tacoma ECU, which works with the manual transmission and V6, but since Im using manual hubs, the lack of an ADD differential will confuse it and cause the permanent CEL again.
My question is mostly will the stock 4Runner ECU actually have fuel injection problems with the manual trans? If not, I might just deal with the permanent CEL. The other thing that was suggested to me was wiring resistors where the disconnected auto solenoids were, to spoof a signal and turn the CEL off. Would this work and how would I go about doing it? Could I do that with the 03/04 Tacoma ECU instead to disable the ADD CEL?

1) ADD isn't controlled by the ECM. It's controlled by the 4wd control module and does not communicate with the ECM.
2) You cannot use an ECM from a tacoma that doesn't have an electronic throttle. 2001-2002 4Runner's use an electronically controlled throttle (drive by wire) with a manual cable as a backup only.
3) For the resistors you will need an electrical wiring diagram and a factory service manual for a 2002 (2001 may work). Different years could have different pinouts and connectors.
4) Fueling should stay the same regardless of the manual swap or CEL codes because of the swap.
 
Sounds like there is some sort of damage to the axle shaft end. If it came out of the 3rd member and then you did bearings and retainers and no longer fits the splines, than the splines on the axle must be damaged, maybe you can clean it up with a small set of files. Maybe when you did the work you deformed the end some how.

What was your method to do the bearings, abs rotor and retainer's?.

Thanks for confirming my original suspicion. I ended up using my die grinder VERY carefully to zip off the very tips of the splines. IT WORKED! It still went in a little too tight but with some light tapping with a rubber mallet, it made its way home.
 
I'm not sure how the end could have been damaged, but if it was press work damage it might not have been lined up perfectly. Always good to check axles for runout while out, roll it on a nice flat surface and watch for deflection/wobble.

Did you use a piece of wood or metal over the end of the axle when pressing, or did you put the press directly on the axle? Just did this job a few weeks ago and made sure to put a metal race driver disc between the axle and press to even out the pressure.

It’s still a confusing issue, though. Mushrooming the splines can only happen while pressing stuff off. Maybe you had it off center or at a bit of an angle while pressing off the tone ring - that’s the bit which took the most force. Glad you got it worked out.
 
valve covers are usually bullet proof...however, they do leak eventually, I recently replaced my valve cover gaskets on my '97 Limited..at 256,000 miles..and lucky, I didn't have a lot of leakage, or excessive pooled oil, laying in and around the engine bay & frame...so it cleaned up well..I'm probably good for another 100k ...

This actually helps me out a ton, thank you. Knowing that the ADD isn't controlled by the ECU means I can use the right 03/04 Tacoma ECU with no problems. It has the electronic throttle and is set up for the 5VZFE and R150F and plugs in with no repinning as I understand it from other forum posts. Thanks a ton, you saved me a lot of headache.
 
Milkshake possibility

So I found a 3rd gen 4x4 listed and it has a 3inch lift, 33s, new rims/tires and looks nice. However he claims to have a new radiator and flushed tranny. I have heard the horror stories of the milkshake and I want to be safe. He also claims to have a jdm motor put in with only 75k miles and no issues with the vehicle. No rust. Is this a go or no go? What should I look for if I see it in person?

If it has had pink milk shake then you'will probably need a used' or remanuctured tranny in the future. If the jdm motor'runs good and the truck drives'good depending on the price it's not a deal breaker.

I picked up a complete ome lift for a 4th gen I believe a 3inch for very very cheap an yes dont need it but it was too good of a deal now im wondering if I can use the coils off the lift to lift my 3rd gen jus ordered some bilstein 5100s. Lift amount? If they work

The front springs will be too long. 4th gen rear springs probably will give you more lift then what they were designed for on the 4th, since 3rd gens are lighter.

I just discovered this spot on my roof of the 99 I just bought a month ago. Can I just take this to a body shop to have them fix or how should I approach this? I want it done correctly. The rest of the truck is good, no rust spots anywhere else. It's leaking through in the rain, headliner is wet under this spot.

Thats preety bad. A body shop should be able to cut it out and put new metal and repaint it
you can save on labor charge by taking off the roof rack and the head liner.your self.

Yeah, I'm pretty upset about it. I really want to keep this truck nice. I've gotta pull the headliner to fix the sunroof so that works. I'll pull the rack too, good idea. Thank you. I really hope they can fix it permanently!
 
Even with using the bottom perch of the bilsteins?

I read somewhere on toytec that the front 3 inch eibach spring for 3rd Gen will only raise the 4th Gen 1.5". Even on the lowest perch probably be a stiff ride but then again gives you a reason to add a heavy after market bumper and may be that'll do it.

Well thanks for the info. Ya couldn't pass up on the lift only $100 for complete lift been sitting in some guys storage container for prolly the last decade figured I'd give it a try
 
I got a question for you guys. also how's it going? I'm bin a member for a minute now but I never really post just a lot of scrolling going on. Any who I did all of my suspension. tie rod ends,SBL's, ball joints and all. even did the rack and pinion bushings but I still get a pull to the right. its alined and set up also even over looked by the guys at wheel works but I still have a pull. never really asked them but what ever. what the hell could it be? rack and pinion its self???? :shocked:
