Are the front ones the only ones of concern ?

Front lbj's failing can lead to significant failure if not worse. There are control arms in the rear.

burnt oil on valve cover

I'm doing a valve check on my 3rz and there is burnt oil around the top of cylinder #4 on the valve cover. How can I diagnose this? any help troubleshooting this is appreciated!

Some one with a 3rz might have a better idea.( [MENTION=148218]JZiggy[/MENTION]) but my guess wood be valve not closing fully. also a valve guide leaking. A valve adjustment should help.

Probably a good place to start...the clearance was only .0025 on one of the exhaust valves. Thanks!

Rough country has come a long ways. The value for money is good. I prefer the bilstein 5100 with appropriate height, weight springs which would be little more expensive. lot of pickup guys run rough country fit bigger tires.

3" from which version (year) of 3rd gen? There was nearly 2" difference from the lowest to the highest of these. WAY easier to get 3" of lift on a 2001 than a 1999. Whole lot less stress/wear on parts to lift an '01 3" than a '99 too.

There are a lot of threads on 3inch lift. 2inch lift will be cheaper and you wont have to dIf drop. If you are dead set on 3 inch lifts. Here are two options

EDIT: [MENTION=373697]Endlessblockades[/MENTION] beat me to it, and gave more info. Though, still consider checking out that link above as a good starting place for your research.

There are many threads on mild lifts. A popular combo seems to be Bilstein 5100 shocks all around, with Old Man Emu (often written as "OME") 880 or 881 springs in front and OME 906 springs in the back. (I went with Bilstein 5100s and OME 880/906. See build thread in my signature.)

Cheapest way to go would be to buy a set of 5100 bilsteins all around 400. Use your existing front springs and adjust the perch height to 2inch. and buy 5th gen 4runner take off rear coils from CL or FB.or' for another 400 you can get ome 880, 881 for thé front and ome 906 for the rear

Look at eibach, toytec, 4wheelparts etc

In post #615 [MENTION=373697]Endlessblockades[/MENTION] recommendation is a good one.

Love my Bilstien 6112/5160 combo, add in OME 906 springs for the rear lift. Not the cheapest, not the best, just a very solid upper middle solution. You could Probably get right about 3" from where you are now on a stock 2001 with these 6112's up front (and then it's just springs and/or spacers out back to match).
