The 3rd Gen All Questions Allowed Thread

Shoot... another couple of weeks and that's about what a gallon of milk and loaf of bread will cost...

I say if you can take advantage of demand, why not? I don't care if I part a fool with their money... not *MY* responsibility to educate them. I doubt it'd fetch $20k, but who knows... that member who had a tree drop on his rig a couple years back got $16K? out of the insurance company... so apparently the value is there in some cases.

People are asking, and paying, a Whole lot more than $20k for even older, and higher mile, 4x4 vehicles (FJ60/62/45/etc...)

I'm aware. And if that's what you wanna do, go for it. But personally I find it not only hard but ridiculous and hypocritical to the highest degree to complain about the current used car prices then turn around and go out of my way to intentionally and deliberately exacerbate it and further support+directly influence this market trend. The used car market didn't get to where it is overnight, out of the blue, without cause; for the most part it got here through this very exact behavior and constantly endorsing/encouraging people with more brains than money.
I mean, through that very same logic it's okay that gas is at $5-7/gal and climbing, or sheets of plain old OSB still fetching $60 after two years - it's totally acceptable that dealerships are charging $10-20k over sticker, or in the case of the Bronco, straight up doubling the price when customers try and pick up their pre-order. After all, they're only taking advantage of demand. Nothing wrong with that right?

Stuff is worth what people are willing (and able) to pay. If someone can sell a 3rd gen for $20k fair play to them. They printed more money in the last 2 years than the whole previous 20 year period so that's what we get happening.

There is an argument that these are borderline classic cars now with a cult following, cryptoclassic I like to call it. So some is from that I think. People that always wanted one in highschool are at the age they have the dough to spend like that.

Personally I feel gross if I feel like I'm not giving someone a good deal know what I mean. Same with buying I can't bring myself to try and rip someone off, I just get a solid fair deal. I will however absolute rape dealerships and corporations anyway I can... got my 5th gen for $13,900 a few years ago from a dealership. Still can't beleive I pulled that off.

Problem is you got to pay these inflated prices when you buy your next vehicle so it's a zero sum game unless you find some niche way to hack it. The only way I can think is to simply wait it out while things eventually implode with higher interest rates. I'm not entirely sure if things will ever deflate though.

Another thought I just had. How much of that $20k are they paying for the vehicle... and how much of that are they paying for the instagram clout from owning it I wonder??

Could this basically be a $5k instagram cool factor tax?

Sounds like you understand Free Market Economy perfectly.

You understand that if you choose to give away a vehicle by selling it under market value, you are not Changing the system. In fact, you'll probably make it worse because you'll attract flippers who will do nothing but take from you, mark it up and try to sell it at market value for a profit.

It's not that I like the situation, but I do accept that it exists and *I* have zero control over it.

IMO there is more nuance to this which doesn't quite apply to our vehicles because 3rd gen 4runners attract a certain kind of buyer, so I talking in general here: on the individuals face-to-face level free market economy I believe honesty and fairness still have a place. Not everyone has the time to research this stuff and understand the values, deal breakers and things. High school kids and stuff, someone who needs a cheap car to get to work tomorrow. I'm not a charity but I'm not going screw someone unless they are aware of it and fine with it. I'm going to tell them as much as I know about the vehicle, any issue I know or anticipate and be and be able explain the logic of my pricing. There's value to be had in having a reputation for honest fair dealing, pays dividends in several ways long term. My 2 cents on it.

Agree about flippers.

Hey yall I was looking into buying a 2000 third gen sport/highlander edition. Does anyone know if the SR5 came with AWD or 4wd inclusively or are there 2wd versions of it?

Pretty sure only the Limited were 100% 4wd (from 1999 on), so it could be either 2wd or 4wd. Not many 4wd 3rd gens down here in Georgia, they are absolutely the exception when shopping, so if you're looking local, it's almost certainly a 2wd version.

SR5 for 1996-2000 can be 2wd or 4wd. Limited can be 2wd or “AWD” 4wd for 99-00. 01-02 SR5 and Limited’s share the same “AWD” 4wd system.

If the vehicle your are looking at is an SR5 4wd then it will not have the “AWD” 4wd system.

I suspect I'm going to have to do some grinding but does anyone have a better suggestion for tightening these lock rings? (DDM D2S) I see TRS has a tool but with only 5 prongs my guess is it won't fit. They also sell new lock rings but I don't know if they'll work with my DDM projectors (plus that's $25 I could spend elsewhere).

I have the same DDM setup and used a channel lock on the flats

Hey guys, does anyone know what offset on rims to get for my 01 3" lift with 255/85/r16 tires? Also any brand recommendations? I would like a little wider stance.

Here's what I'm seeing for factory spec offset, etc. Decreasing offset will push the wheels out.

96-02 4Runner (2.7L/3.4L) OEM 16″ Wheel Specs
Wheel Size: 16×7
Bolt Pattern: 6×139.7
Offset: +15mm
Backspace: 4.59 in.
Centerbore: 106mm
Lug Nut Thread Size: 12×1.5
OEM Tire Size: 265/70-16

I need to replace the connectors on my battery cables. Can't seem to find the size of the factory wires so I'm not sure which connectors to buy. 4 gauge? 3, 6?

Trying to program a new fob. 4Runner only came with a single, all metal key when I purchased, and has the RS3200 system installed. System appears to be working as expected as I've accidentally tripped the alarm several times.

I've tried all the programming sequences I could find online, but unable to get the car into pairing mode. Do I need to be using a chipped key for the programming setup instead of my all-metal one?

I have a 2000 SR5. I do not have chipped keys.

There are a couple things that come to mind that may be happening to prevent you from entering the program mode.

-Are all of your door locks locking/unlocking when cycling? Door lock knobs going all the way up/down? If not the procedure fails.
-Is the door jam switch (for the dome light) working dependably every time you open/close the door? Again, if not the procedure fails.

Remote key fob is 100% separate from the plastic chip key. They have nothing to do with each other. One unlocks doors, the other disables the immobilizer/allows the vehicle to start.

For the keyless system in the Limiteds, the major hangup is the door lock actuators not doing their job (big freaking ask to go through so many lock/unlock cycles in a short time). Sometimes rebuilding those with a new motor (or outright replacement if you have the $$$), sometimes doing it first thing in the morning, sometimes "helping" a struggling lock by pulling up on the manual lock tab yourself (or having helpers if there's more than 1 failing).

Someone else though, just within the past few days, hit up a junkyard to pick up an RS3000 brain that had the built-in programming button. Makes the whole process a ton easier, might be something to consider.

Bad head gasket?

Started my terd gen after its been sitting for a couple of weeks and noticed pink coolant leaking from where the cat bolts onto the exhauste pipe. Gonna get a pressure tester and pressure test it tomorrow but thought I'd come on here since I can't post a new thread and ask if anyone has had this issue. It's a 99 limited with the 3.4. My brother said it's either a bad head gasket, cracked cylinder or bad intake manifold gasket?

Does the exhaust have a lot of white smoke coming from it when you start it up? Does the exhaust smell sweet? If yes to both then you have coolant getting in the cylinders.

It’s highly unlikely that you are leaking enough coolant for it to flow out the cylinders and out the exhaust in liquid form without hydro locking the engine. It’s more likely that the rear heater lines have a hole or the heater core hoses are leaking and dripping down. Pressure testing the cooling system is a good idea.

Yes and yes. Before it started leaking coolant I did hear a water sloshing noise when I turned the defroster on. Will pressure test it tomorrow and report back with my findings. Thanks for the reply.

You're welcome. Sloshing noise could be leaking heater core or clogged ac drain hose as well. Keep us posted with what you find out please.
