The Cut My Gas Pedal in Half!!!!

I brought my 4R into the dealership (Belk Toyota, Oxford, MS) this morning with my TSB in hand for the "sulfur odor" catalytic converter/piping replacement. The guy said he would call me when they were done. Three hours later, he calls and says its ready. My first thought was, "Wow, that was quick!" I pick up my SR5 15 mins later and he said they just inspected the vehicle and ordered the parts; they will be in tomorrow. Bring it back then. He also informed me they performed the "fix" for the gas pedal recall. THEY CUT MY PEDAL IN HALF! I was pretty pissed. Now, after an hour, and some thought, I'm not that mad anymore. I suppose it made the vehicle safer. Now, the thing that upsets me the most is that they never called me to ask if they could cut the pedal. Thoughts?

IMO, the title should be change(on that thread) to something what the recall is all about to AVOID THIS to happen.

I got that recall notice. It said something about the floor mat getting in the way. I took it in to the dealer thinking I was getting new floor mats. Al they did was cut the pedal, at least they washed my 4Runner. I don't think they cut mine as much as they did yours.

They will install a replacement pedal if you prefer. At this point, they really don't have a choice but to do the "fix" or replace.

technically the car is "unsafe" if the fix isn't performed, so they do it when they can.

I took my runner in for an alignment and oil change and they told me the same thing. I asked them what the recall entailed and they told me they trim the gas pedal AND mess with something in the ECU to allow it to cut power if the pedal is ever stuck...I don't want this done to my car.

Mine too... take it in for an oil change and its returned with half of the pedal lopped off. As for making the car safer... Bull Pucky. NASA proved that there was nothing wrong with the Toyota pedals other than Camry and ES350 Driver's pressing the wrong one.

And the NHTSA stats on all 4Runners showed that they were near the bottom for SUA claims. If your pedal has been lopped off, blame media hype, Rhonda Smith, Professor Gilbert, Congress, Trial Lawyers, and some guy, whose name escapes me, who was upside-down with his Prius payments!

I believe as part of the settlement with NHTSA and for the case/investigation to be closed completely, Toyota voluntarily recalled other models in their lineup. Thus the 4Runner which I don't recall having the floormat gas pedal entrapment or sticky pedal issue in the first place got included.

I think other members have said you have to tell the dealer that you don't want the pedal chop to be performed. I never got the letter for my 4Runner, but gotten a couple letters for my Tacoma floormats.

Same here. Been in 2x for service since and I've told them each time, don't touch the pedals and don't do the recall and they're fine with this. I'm just concerned that now I need to tell them that every time I come in for service and if I forget I'm going to have a circumsized pedal.

Also agree on changing the sticky title - can a MOD take care of that?

There ain't nothing wrong my T4R, and they ain't performing any recall, and they ain't going to give me a "stubby!" :biggrin2:

Just like BigEd, I'm afraid I'll forget to tell them one time and find my pedal has been modified.

The sad part is the recall it is to protect Toyota against stupidity... People who put layers of mats on top of each other and then cause the gas pedal to be an issue.

Shhh... don't tell anyone... I have all-weather mats stacked on top of the OE carpeted mats... and I have had ZERO issues with the truck.

And even if I did... its called NEUTRAL. Yes it is tragic that a few people have been injured or killed... Shifting into NEUTRAL would have saved them ALL.

The recall should still have been run by the customer, the customer has the option to refuse the pedal cut and I'm turn has to sign some release forms. They should not have done the fix without customer authorization.

Just tell them you are not happy with the cut pedal and want a new pedal, they are required to give you a new one the customer doesn't like the appearance if the cut pedal.

I guess the concept is hard to grasp.

Stacking then and knowing there is an issue is asking for trouble in my opinion. One day a spouse, child or friend could be driving the 4R and they might not think as clearly when in a complete panic...

I don't see the problem. I let them trim it; it drives just as easily after the trimming as before. I drive barefoot most of the time (kick off my flip-flops); the trimmed pedal doesn't affect me in the least! :snacker:
