The dealer says Yaw sensor but I am not so sure ...

Hey all,

I've been a lurker on this forum for a while -- what a great source of information! Anyway, first time poster so here we go ...

My ride: 2008 Sport 4wd v6 about 43k miles (all stock for now)

To get straight to the point ….

My Problem:
It feels as if my 4Runner doesn’t really coast when I let off the accelerator. Another way to describe it is the feeling/sound of driving on one of those cement type interstates that have all the grooves in it. Nothing obnoxious or harsh but it is always there. Other than a brief (30 second one time) occurrence no dash indicator lights are on. The dealer said my truck is throwing a code for the yaw sensor.

My questions:
1) If the yaw sensor is bad is it common to experience drivability type issues 100% of the time? Or is it usually just the dash indicator light with maybe some random drivability type issues?
2) My dealer said the issue I am experiencing is being caused by a bad yaw sensor because it is trying to engage VSC 100% of the time (via code they pulled, but no dash indicator light is on). If this is true shouldn’t I be able to turn off VSC manually and those issues would go away?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Now for all the rambling details ….

A couple weeks about things just started feeling different when I let off the accelerator. The only way I could describe it initially was to imagine the transmission is always in a gear lower than it should, "gearing down". Nothing harsh or significant but it is driving me crazy. It also isn't speed, gear, or road surface specific (happens all the time).

In my searches I came across posts about the "rumble strip" scenario which peaked my interest. However, that problem seems to occur between a specific speed and gears not to mention being a much more significant event.

I also came across something that recommended pulling the fuse on the EFI to reset the computer (can't remember what issue that was tied to) so I did. Not in any way related to my issue but I did take that opportunity to clean the MAF sensor after reading some posts here about it. I digress.

The kicker was one night I was driving (in 2wd) and I swear it was the 4LO indicator (not VSC) that came on ... at 60mph mind you. I engaged 4Hi and then back to 2wd and the light cleared and never returned.

The dealer’s answer was "that must be it" the yaw sensor because it is the only code my computer showing. Everyone here knows the drill: over $1k when all said and done so that was a definite "no thanks". Back the forums I go and read about how to manually "zero" my yaw sensor so I did (level surface, etc). I performed this yesterday and still no joy.

This **** has been plagueing a lot of the people and it is really pissing me off. Toyota is a full of **** company that puts all these bull**** systems in place to satisfy govt criterion so that it looks good on paper. When the electronics fail as they do with the piece of **** Made in Mexico parts, you are at the mercy of the dealer with their bull**** service charges to tell you that you will need a $1000 part with $500 labor and only they can do it because they are the only ones that can flash the software. I say **** that! My 2nd gen is so god damn reliable and never makes driving more dangerous like this electrical infested computer of an SUV.

Awesome rig, but Toyota ****ed up big time with the vsc and all that ****.

Sorry to hear of your electrical failures on SAFETY systems that are making your rig more DANGEROUS!

After reading the thread you referenced I am not feeling any better. Thanks! ;)

It was funny how someone posted about checking the battery, the dealer did point that out and I did let them swap it out. Not because I thought it was part of the problem as they suggested but because it was ~3years old and it is only a matter of time before that was no longer optional.

I will keep the wheel sensors on my list of possibilities...

After more research I became convinced it was one of my front wheel bearings. Went to the dealer yesterday and they confirmed it was the front right one -- replaced under the 5/60 warranty in a couple hours and all is back to normal :trophy:

As for the YAW sensor, they confirmed that my manual zero point calibration cleared that error code and it has not returned ... so we are all good there. So glad I found this forum and that I did not throw out the $1k my dealer first suggested on a new sensor!

Now maybe I can devote some time/funds to the fun stuff. I am thinking maybe some window tint first (being summer in Atlanta), LED light upgrades, and replacing my propeller shaft with the Lexus part ….

Congrats on finding the answer!! Keep us updated on the propeller shaft upgrade.

Don't forget HID upgrade :thumb3:

Thanks for the follow up.

Very rare for a brand new poster to do that (too rare, period).
