I wonder if there's something you could do to allow it to drive two minutes down the road then die. They aren't going to continue trying to steal it in the middle of a busy road. That may be a liability however if it causes an accident.

The thing to remember is this, you don't need to make yours impossible to steal. You just need to make it harder to steal than the next person's.

Same thing applies to houses. You just need to make yours less appealing than someone else's.

haha For a second I thought you are talking about the thief, until i read your second sentence.

I dont like that method because then your car is not where you parked it last, and imagine if you really really have a need all of a sudden to go somewhere!

I think you're on to something.... A cut off switch for the MAF sensor. Runs for a minute then dies, runs for a minute then dies....lol

It all sounds like a lot of work that would just end up preventing me from driving it lol.

I'm with the full coverage/garage method. If you've got thousands upon thousands of dollars invested in your truck and no garage to park in it might be a priority issue

And if someone is car-jacking you LET THEM TAKE IT! Not worth a bullet over a 15 year old vehicle...

I thought our keys had a little chip in them? I also have the valet key that doesn't have the black overmolding and that works so I guess I've answered my own question lol.

I really think owning "The Truck Club" should be on your list.

For one it is a deterrent. They could just as easily steal a 4runner that doesn't have the a CLUB installed.

I know these can be bypassed, but just like the fuel cuttoff mod it will stop most of the thieves out there. Most thieves stealing a 3rd Gen are, in my opinion, usually drug addicts and joy riders. Not hardened criminals with actual GTA skills.

All the car thefts around here are smash & grab stuff so if they don't see it they can't steal it.

My cousins car was stolen right out of their garage. Door was shut. I'm pretty sure it isn't that uncommon.

That's a good one, no thief will come equipped with a spare gas pedal and impossible to drive without one. Add some kind of immobilizer to the mechanism.

Sorry to turn this into a zombie-post. Back in the day we used to chain our hoods shut to prevent battery theft (I live in a city). I did that to my 2nd Gen but haven't found a good way on my 2000 yet. Seems like you want to keep them out of/delay access to the engine bay. Isn't there a crucial fuse or relay you could pull if you need to leave your rig at a trailhead or sketchy spot? If so, I would want to have an extra in a well hidden hide-a-key because i would probably lose it!
