the Rescue Runner build thread

im sure it also didnt help that i was towing close to 2500lbs of tools and equipment in my trailer as well. thats another story as it damaged my rear bumper, -id suggest not towing with a non tow hitch... aftermarket bumper with 2" receivers are not adequate. i now have close to a 1/2 sag gap on my CBI at the back of the truck and i can visually see the bend in the mounting brackets.
.

Ok, this has me a bit worried hearing about this. I wonder what CBI rates their hitches at? I've been researching trailers and I figured that was one area I wouldn't have to worry about (though I shouldn't be anywhere close to 2500 lbs of stuff on a trailer).

I did contact CBI after I've had mine for a bit and suggested a few changes. Turns out they already did them after I bought mine. I'm sure I'll be taking mine off and beefing it up in a few places, and adjusting others. It should be easy to add some structure to it for towing.

When you get a chance, could you post a pic of your bumper?

2500lbs was including trailer weight. That's really not that much weight.

That's even worse! I was thinking 2500 lbs over and beyond what you normally would carry due to the type of trip you were on..... Did you weight shift and you were tongue heavy?

Are you going to contact CBI over it? Not that it would benefit you any (which I would give you SOME KIND of credit if that was my product I sold), but maybe get them to beef up their bumpers!

I hate that it happened to you, but I'm glad this is out on the forum.

I haven't decided yet... I probably will but I'm not gonna expect too much... I'm a welder and work is structural tower repair and modification, so beefing up the bumper won't be that hard but I shouldn't have to with that much weight. If I was towing a car and a trailer I could understand and say it served me right.

I might have been a little tongue heavy but it's almost impossible to determine exact weight without a scale. The 500lbs is always a estimate and a guideline. No way anyone like CBI can say yes or no if their bumper would hold 500... I know they do not test them. I do know though that manufactures like Reese and Curt ect give their receivers a 500lb tongue weight rating and they will easily handle 3-4x that weight. Where the issues come into play is the actual ball and stinger.

Please post pics when you do it. As stated, I have some rework I want to do to mine. Mainly beef it up so the pass side doesn't twist when the tire rack is swung out. "Maybe" trim it back some so the tires don't rub with EXTREME flex. (I broke my sway arm bolts holding it to the axle so I had to remove it.)

I can totally relate to your tent experience. ESPECIALLY if you're setting up and taking down the annex every time. That thing is a pain which is why we've only used it twice, both times when we KNEW we'd be stationary for multiple days. Three weeks is a long time in a tent, roof top or ground. I also start getting antsy after a week or so of tent sleeping.

As for the bumper... Both of my CBI bumpers (and I suspect yours too, based on the light peeking through at the bottom between bumper and frame) required 2 holes drilled into the frame on both sides. I would not bet my life on it, but I would bet a beer or six that had those bolts been installed, you wouldn't have had an issue. In fact, I bet if you installed them now it would bring the bumper right back where it needs to be.

I highlighted where the holes are supposed to go in your picture.

Here's the install instructions if my picture doesn't help. My phone camera is broken or I'd send you a picture of mine. May be relevant to you too, psraff

Yeah but those were not in the instructions when I got the bumper, nore were there bolts included to do so...

Yeah, I'm probably gonna add a vertical 1-1½ plate along the inside to help add rigidity to the bumper once I pull it at work and straighten it out

That's exactly what I was thinking also.

I used to survey new locations for cell towers, I'm a little envious of you right now. For some reason most of those towers are in beautiful locations,

I saw this truck in google images and fell in love as a platform for mine and now I come across the whole thread! Good work on this thing man :)

yes, yes they are. im trying to create my own job within the company, because not very many of the sights we go to are prescouted... i mean people have been there, but there is like no details on the sights other than its on top of a mountain or down this road ect... yeah really great directions. anyhow we always end up getting there and finding something is not right or someone else is already working there or yeah, and it costs our company thousands a day to have this poor internal communications/logistics. anyhow im trying to create a logistics manager position where i basically go to all the sights ahead of time and scout them out, find local hotels, food, fuel, best routes(any weight, length or height restrictions), what tools will we need, what special considerations will need to be made, what materials exactly we will need ect basically everything that we spend 2days+/- doing when we get there. im hoping i can convince them ill save them more than enough in the long run to not only make the company more profitable but also allow them to grow...

I like it. What are your future plans?
A uz sawp... I was initially thinking a 1uz, but that limits me to only a few years of donors. If I go with a 2uz I can take any of them, but I'm gonna look for an earlier version(non vvti). I'd like to add a hot shower system with a 5gal fresh water tank.

A 2UZ would motivate this thing nicely.
Make me a deal on your old anchor for my 94.

give me a shout next time you are in the neighborhood...got a new phone so I should be getting msgs now

i just love how smooth the 2uz is in the lexus and sequoias ive ridden in. its not a huge powerhouse but i think it will be enough for the 4runner -i do wish my GX had more power though. i hate that tahoes can outrun me lol

i know a guy that has put two 5.3's and 1 6.0 in some FJ40 and a FJ45.
They bring those trucks to life.
a 5.3 might be something to consider. Parts availability is great and you can find low mileage engines reasonable

so this warmer weather brings out the only flaw in the rig, the motor likes to heat up with the AC on. im looking for a bigger radiator at this point, i have already removed all the rubber splash guards along the inner fenders to let heat out there, i have installed the TRD 160* thermostat, and it runs fine at a constant 170-173 normal driving around town/hwy but if i pull any loads or climb grades i quickly get up around 195-198*(still not bad, but i can not use my AC on warm days as ill qucikly jump up in to the 212+* and thats 70mph on the fwy no load, empty with just me... pull a little trailer or climb a grade or have other people in the truck with me and that quickly becomes 220+* and starts climbing fast. i think at this point im looking for a bigger radiator or going to have to have one made. i found one locally on craigslist for $200, its 2" thick all throughout and is all aluminum, i just dont know if i wanta pay $200 to some kid of craigslist for a "new never installed" radiator... but i have a feeling if i pass this up ill be paying closer to double that to have one made custom for me... i was just hoping for a little bigger, like a 3" thick, i have all the room in the world for a thick radiator with the electric fans.

i have seen a radiator locally for sale that is an all aluminum 2" thick with 4" thick caps. now im admittedly not a radiator guy so i dont know how that translates to how many cores ect, but its appearing to be twice the size of the stock/oe units. the guy is asking $200 for it and claims its new, but has no paperwork and appears to not know much about radiators as he didnt even know what a core or cap was when i asked about thickness or how many cores it was.

if any of you have any advice or thoughts on larger drop in radiators that are either easily sourced(say from another vehicle) that have a greater cooling capacity or a place that makes aftermarket radiators that dont require me to mortgage the house id be interested.
