The T4R wave - I'm giving you the fingers - 4 of them - whether you like it or not :)

So yesterday I was driving down a rural road south of O-Town and I saw a 5th gen Trail approaching and I couldn't help myself - I waved at the dude with my thumb tucked in and 4 fingers out - and he waved back Together we had a fleeting 2 second bromance acknowledging each other's impeccable good taste in driving a T4R

Now that I have a T4R again and seeing how Toyota is beginning to recognize the burgeoning cult following the T4R has cultivated after all these years (I think the TRD Pro is proof of this) I say we start waving at each other damnit like all the other cult vehicles do! And no, I don't care if it's an off-road monster or bone stock and occupied by a soccer mom, a retiree, or some college punk - I'm still waving

During my 6 year hiatus from the T4R I had a Jeep Wrangler, a Corvette, and a Kawi Ninja, and for all three of them we waved, so I'm gonna do it for my T4R too whether you like it or not!

I did a search and there are actually 2 old threads on here about this that were started and died back in 2010 but there were a lot of naysayers and it never caught on - but times were different then - those were the dark years when sales of the TRR were bottoming out. Now that T4R sales are skyrocketing and people are recognizing more and more the T4R for the iconic vehicle that it is, I say the time to start an official T4R wave is NOW - who's with me!?!

I've had 3 Miatas, 2 Mini Coopers, and 7 Jeeps. With the Miatas and MCs, the wave was a given. With the Jeeps, it only seems the Wranglers and CJs participate, often with the older "real" Jeeps snubbing the newer models. Also, as Wranglers have become more civilized many are driven by people that have no clue about the Jeep wave, so many do not.

So mostly out of habit, I find myself waving at other 5th gen silver TEs and any other 4R that waves first. There's only been one modded white TE that waved at me first and that was yesterday.

Yeah I've seen that rule book before - pretty funny But I'm a strong believer in the KISS principle - just give a fellow T4R owner the 4 fingers regardless of who it is and whether lifted, etc., or not. I forgot about those crazy Miata people and their waves - heck the T4R predates the Miata by 5 years, so if the Miata people have a wave we should too

Well I hear you but I think you could trouble yourself to at least wave back you elitist snob Seriously though - the owner could be strapped for cash or just isn't in need of a lift - I think 90% of us on here would agree that owning a bone stock T4R is better than owning no T4R - can I get an amen to that?

I always wave when I see other 4Runners. Usually its some old lady that is completely clueless that my 4Runner is even the same car that she's driving.

I do get quite a few guys in older generations waving back, especially those in modded T4R's.

I think I've only had two 5th gens wave back at me. One was just a middle aged guy and his wife admiring mine, and another time was a younger guy in a black TRD Pro.

Most people in Colorado have substantial tint so I couldn't see if someone were waving or not. It's intimidating to wave at a black void

Was rolling through Delaware the first week we had our Trd Pro towards Philly, passed a convoy of Jeeps (all off roaders heading somewhere) and they all gave me the wave. Thought it was really cool as we previously had a built up TJ & it was unexpected.

Just because you don't believe they are real Jeeps doesn't change reality... enjoy your fantasy. [emoji38] But that mentality is exactly why I got tired of most of the Jeep forums. My '12 JKUR stock was more capable than almost any other stock Jeep except maybe a TJ Rubicon and yet people with Sports and little more than 35s would turn their noses up and say stupid stuff like "It ain't a jeep until you mod it or break it or wrinkle the sheet metal, etc". Whatever.

LOL. It does become like work sometime. And I see at least 2 or 3 4Runners for every Jeep I see.

Yeah I've been over on those forums and I've seen a lot of what I posted as a joke but they are actually serious. I only have accounts for the classifieds if I see something to buy. I'm part of a jeep club here in MN so I love all jeeps except those lame fiat-Chrysler crap that they are spewing out now.

I typically gave a normal wave for the last year (since I've been an owner) under the following conditions:

-I saw a 4Runner that had any slight mod; non-stock wheels, deleted running boards, debadged, plastidip anywhere, extra lights including hitch-zip-tied reverse lights, anything that basically said 'this person is not just a grateful driver of a 4runner, but at least a partial enthusiast.' It was not a snob thing, but I figured it a surefire way for me to know (or at least hope) the person at least knew why they were being waved at, and it wasn't just some grandma who happened into a 4runner (though grandma's can love a 4runner too I do suppose) and thought the wave meant 'no, YOU go, I insist.'
-My windows were rolled down. Tint works both ways, and I'm pretty sure most wouldn't know I was waving at them despite how frantically I did it.

Now I think I'll go for the full 4-Finger Salute at any and every 4Runner and ensure that my windows go down to do so. Eventually people will catch on right? Gotta start somewhere...
