Greetings,
Recently I purchased a Kenwood TM-D710A to use as my mobile set-up. I figured I'd begin chronicling my install (with a 6 month old my time in the garage is limited) which I hope to have complete by this coming Saturday (5/11).
The basic idea I'm going with is the face-plate mounted on the overhead console with the body of the unit mounted low on the drivers side center console tunnel. (which by the way, does anyone know if shooting a few self-tapping screws into the plastic close to where it meets the carpet is a bad idea?)
Day 1's progress:
Removed over head console. Much easier than I expected, remove two screws inside the sunglasses holders, apply downward pressure to the rear of the body and it pops off. Then unhook the cable connecting all the wires and you're free.
For the actual install of the face-plate, I cut down the "vehicle mount" that Kenwood sent to just a little mounting bracket with no rear support. Two holes were already drilled in this piece, so using them I aligned them with the overhead console and tightened the mount in place. Pictured:
For the remote mounting cable (which is regular CAT5 if you don't need the supplied 11 feet, or if you need more) I drilled two relatively halfass holes. One in the front, and one in the back, thus running the wire through the overhead console.

From there, the halfassness continues to me jamming the wire into the headliner against the windshield, over the A-pillar, and shoved it in the weather seal running down the door. There was one little section I couldn't tuck away (pictured below), but I believe that half an ass is better than none at all.
From there the cable sits until tomorrow or later in the week when I can resume install.
