thieves and our trucks, what do they want?

My radio code and battery disconnect thread got me thinking. When I was a kid, thieves would break in and take the CD players. Now, what are they looking for in our trucks? I have a stock unit in my limited and found out there is no code to re-install. Do they want that along with the GPS? No one wanted a stock unit back in the days, how about now? Any value to them? I know they steal Hondas for their engines, and older toyota trucks. Ask me how I know on those. They also want the S2000's seats so I try to not take it to places where they can have at it. Now that my Limited is my daily driver, along with some dirty trucks, should I be careful with it in shady places where they can rip up my vehicle? What do they really want that may have any value on the stolen market?

Just my personal experience, but I had a Honda Civic SI and all they did when my car got stolen was they took all the alloy wheels and took off the SI sticker. Punks. Stole everything in the car, but left the radio (and the engine) and had reprogrammed the radio to their station of choice, which was pretty telling about the age of the punk(s) that stole it.

More often than not....the whole friggen truck! I'm lucky i have a garage to park in at home and secure parking at work.

My apologies to the OP and others as I was discussing car theft in general based on my experience, but it did teach me a lesson - always buy a car with an anti-theft device! My 4Runner has one. It was the first thing I checked for. Although it confused me at first as it was called an "engine immobilizer" on the stat sheet. Had the guy show me specifically when I bought it - sure enough below the a/c-heat LO-HI dial that security light flashes nonstop.

Toyota JBL factory Navs are a high dollar resale item and easy to take out for thieves that know what they are doing.That's because the same Gen 6 JBL with just different front trim is used throughout the Toyota/Lexus lineup. I could have one out in less then 2 minutes as two 10mm bolts are all that hold it in once you pop the trim off and they cut the wires to save even more time.

Damn. I rolled the windows down like you said, locked the doors, and then reached inside to open a door. Nothing happened. Yep, I have the SR5, too.

Oh well, I am glad I don't live in a high-crime area anymore. But why does that security light flash on and off it there's no alarm? Or do all 4Runners do this and I just was an ignorant buyer? You seem to be very well versed on this subject.

Thanks, by the way, for blowing my false sense of security away, but at least now I know.

Yeah, I thought I had an alarm system just going by the manuel as to how to set it. Tested and found I don't have an audible one, just the engine immobilizer.
I guess this is supposed to prevent a drive off, but of course does nothing to alert for a break in.
Is this what the SR5 forum members are relying on? Can't start it, but feel free to help yourself to my stuff?
BTW, I understand air bags are a valuable and frequently stolen item.
Side note: was wondering if anyone has had a Toyota oem alarm system added. I stopped by the dealer and the parts guy checked his computer and said there was nothing for a 2012 SR5. They send them out to a 3rd party installer. I talked to the third party guy and he wasn't sure if he could program the alarm to my existing keyless fob. He said to ask the Toyota dealer. Ha, what a run around.

someone followed me home and try to rip off my Acura GSR at 3:30 in the afternoon. I had it for less then a week. I had an 85 SR5 4WD truck that was taken as a whole. Break into my old Celica way back in the mid - late 80s too many times. My MR2 was gone through in a parking lot as I was enjoying dinner with my wife. Now you know.

I stopped by the dealer and the parts guy checked his computer and said there was nothing for a 2012 SR5. They send them out to a 3rd party installer. I talked to the third party guy and he wasn't sure if he could program the alarm to my existing keyless fob. He said to ask the Toyota dealer. Ha, what a run around.

Time to talk to a different installer...............last weekend I installed a CompuStar remote start (CM6200) which also has an alarm system built in. Add the optional siren and impact sensor......and there you go, it's a 2'fer!

I also added the RF-2W9000-SS antenna with LCD 2-way remote fob "Up to one mile range". If any door is opened, remote vibrates, plays a nifty tune to alert you of activity. Now that I think of it, maybe I should disconnect the horn wire to make it a silent alarm. Could have a surprise party with the thief(s)...........say hello to my little friend!!!!!!!:gun5:

Here they would steal the whole vehicle and take it to Mexico.

The City of Angles, sounds nice. Sucks that people are like this, no respect for other peoples stuff or the hard work it took to get that stuff. But, then again, it's just stuff (which can alway be replaced), still annoying as hell though.
