Thieves are getting smarter!!!

While crime rates aren't bad here in NW NJ, one of the first thing that was stolen off my '04 runner was the rubber towing cap when I went to the grocery store. I was pissed off, but I never bothered to replace it because chances of it getting stolen is probably high. (This is a note for those -- maybe pull that off and store it safely).

After that, whenever I went grocery shopping, I take our Rottweiler along for the ride. When I put the car in park, roll down the window about an inch or so all around, with the doggie in the cargo area. She was good dog, never trained to be aggressive, lays down and nap while we shop, but quick to stand up to noises around...

Nothing was ever taken from inside the 4runner when we came out.

I wonder if one were to put some heavy gauge steel / diamond plate above the battery like a cover (or attached to the underside of the hood), that when they tried to punch through, would they have been deterred and left it at that, or just gotten pissed off and caused more damage...

That made me almost physically sick! f**king a55holes. If i was you i would get a night vision camera mounted outside your house, one that records onto an sd card/computer, perhaps one you can view on your phone/internet from anywhere. That should at least give you some piece of mind.

thanks for the heads up though its a good thing you shared you could have helped out one of us!

Dougtoms01, that's an interesting solution i may look into that myself thanks!!

Their getting smarter everyday we had a rash of them breaking winds laying a shirt down then climbing in that way. That way they didn't set off the stock alarm.

Sucks cause they damaged the **** out of your rig

After reading this, im thinking of dabbing up some kind of battery cover out if some quarter inch steel plate, or something else of the sort. Not indestructible, but definitely a pain in the ass to get through

This motivates me to get my hands on a broken stock stereo and remove the face of it and turn it into a fake cover. I did this with an Mustang I used to have. I cut it as thin as I could then epoxied the button on. I just need to find a broken stereo.

What ever happened? Did thy get caught? And did your truck get repaired?

Truck is repaired to better than pre-loss condition (nicer deck than I had). Insurance covered the repairs (hood, window, and replaced the radio), but they didn't cover personal items (ray-bans, nice knife, nice flashlight, iPod, and plenty other little ods I had sitting in the glove/center console). Haven't heard about them getting caught, but I'm definitely ready and waiting for them if they decide to come back :hunter:

It's probably on craigslist already....

I check craigslist every now and then to see if I can find it, hasn't come up yet tho.

Not a bad idea. I was thinking the same when I got my replacement hood. I have surveillance that alerts me of intruders now, so I'm waiting. I don't even thing they'd have time to touch it before they see my 12 gauge down their throat.

It definitely hurts to have something like this happen, especially when I have a 1 year old that I need to get to daycare and the truck is broken when I get out of the house. Poop happens. You just feel violated in many ways.

You're too nice.

After reading this I was thinking about setting up proximity sensors with a 50,000 volt shock system and maybe a flamethrower or two.

Sure, maybe the neighborhood will be missing a couple cats and perhaps the random dog but at least I won't have the surprise extra hoodscoop mod to walk out to one morning.

...and hell, I might even go so far as to put up a neon sign that says "Welcome, thieves".......you know, as sort of a preemptive thing

(A car of mine was broken into over 10yrs ago now and yeah, I'm still bitter about it)

;):

Good they repaired everything, but sucks they didn't replace the other small items. Sorry it happened but good they you got a nicer deck than before? It shouldn't have happened but I guess you could say there was a better thing than before, but I still would be pissed and waiting for them to try again.

I am glad to hear your truck is all repaired and you can get life back to normal.

There are some serious ********* on Earth and $H!T like this really pisses me off. I hope they catch the crooks and just shoot them. NO TRIAL, JUST SHOOT THEM.

Wow, that sucks. Those were some crafty criminals. If they're that smart breaking in, I imagine they wouldn't be silly enough to post them on Craigslist. But never hurts to keep looking.

Thanks for sharing with the T4R community. Hopefully it won't happen to any of the rest of us.
