Thinking about going to synthetic

I have an 04 V6, and have always used dino, mostly Mobil Clean 5000. I just wonder if I should be concerned with anything being that I have 85k miles on her already.

Has anyone here ever made the switch around 85K and had problems? (i.e. seal leakage etc.)

If there is no leakage now, you shouldn't have any problems. Why waited so long anyway? :D

I've been using synthetic in all of my vehicles for years including my current 2 4Runners. My only suggestion would be to go ahead and change to a synthetic (I personally think Mobil1 is the best bang-for-the-buck but I use Amsoil in my Mustang) and watch for any leaks or smoking. And if it does leak or smoke a little, leave it in to see if it worsens or stops before you decide to change back.

I had a '97 Camry that had 35,000 miles when I changed to synthetic and it smoked at startup. I could have lived with it but the ex got that car and she switched back to dino.

My personal reason for using synthetic is not for protection but the change frequency that I went to from 3k miles with dino to 10k miles with synthetic. Since I drive about 2k-3k miles per month, I was simply changing oil way too often. And with alll the cars I've had, synthetic afforded me no additional engine life compared to dino oil with the change frequencies I noted above for each. My cars with dino vs. my cars with synthetic had no different oil useage or issues after 200k+ miles.

Thanks for the replies. I picked up some Valvoline Synpower 5w-30 and a PureOne filter today. Im going to change the oil tomorrow. I hope I don't get the smoking issue :)

a couple of observations so far:

Right after changing the oil my engine did sound like it had less noise than before I changed it. A small 'tick tick tick" that I heard before seemed to have gone away. I don't have any smoking or leaking so far. One question I have though is how important is it to use a new crush washer on the drain plug? I just put the old one back on and tightened it up really tight. It's not leaking, yet.

Just be careful with "really tight" on the drain plug. You don't want to strip it.

I don't change the crush washer everytime. I do it every 3rd or 4th oil change and don't have leakage issues.

Ok, the tick tick tick tick noise that I swear wasn't there when I first time I started the 4R returned. I don't know when, but I noticed it again today. Man, I swear though, it did sound quieter at first :)

A local dealer usually has a coupon for 4.25/filter so thats where I get mine. They also throw a new washer in the box without me asking for it. You prob. dont need to change it verey time, but if it is free why not.
