Thinking of adding a transmission temp gauge

Any thoughts on an OBD2 blue tooth attachment using the Torque app on a android? I have heard good things but I am not sure if a tranny temp gauge would be a possibility? does the 3rd get have a stock sensor for the tranny temp for the ECU? If that was the case then I am assuming that the app would work. Plus you would be able to visualize a lot more sensors throughout your rig for a reasonable price.

I believe 98 model year and up, the ECU can send trans temp.

I can tell you for sure 96 and 97 don't send it for the 3rd gen.

Edit: Bdheggie3, a few members with a 98 have said it also doesn't send. so 99 model year and up is your answer & what I wrote above is not correct.

Random tangent - Even though my 97 doesn't send it and I had to do a gauge, I still bought a bluetooth adapter and Torque Pro, it was like $5 and still shows a lot of stuff. I recommend a ScanGauge II though, I got it recently a while after I had the Torque app and now my OBDII port is in use with it.

It's less distracting and shows everything TP does, but more importantly -- the above steering wheel mount is more convenient to read and not risk a major accident to you or others on the road by looking down at your Android phone or tablet.

I just went with the Dakota Digital Block which made for an easy and clean installation. I also like it over the Autometer Block because this allows me to add a ground wire. FYI, the reason why I mounted it upside down is because this prevents air pockets forming around the sensor which can give you an inaccurate reading.

Sorry but, never seen this block thing before your post. What is the benefit to that? My setup doesn't have one with my sensor.

I ended up using a combination of T's and fitting for the sensor. Actually, I have a dual sensor setup so I can see temps from pre & post tranny cooler on the same gauge.

I have a few pics here http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...ou-do-your-3rd-gen-today-687.html#post1984964 , and here's a night shot of my AutoMeter Gauge.

How do you differentiate pre and post cooling with 1 gauge? Am I missing something from the pic? :P

Here it is in all its glory. Wasn't hard at all to install.

I like the clean setup of the block and best of all it has a screw for a ground which you need for an Autometer. Our setup is unique since we are not attaching the sensor to metal hoses which would have a sufficient ground.

He has two sensors, one for intake and another for output. He probably has a 3 way switch so he can monitor the different temps with one meter. Pretty ingenious if you ask me.

I have a 98 which does not have a factory sensor. This block allows for an inline manifold for a temp sensor that comes with the Autometer. The sensor needs a ground which the block provides. This makes for a clean and easy install.

Makes sense.

Looks clean too.

My sensor for my autometer is grounded all the way back in the vehicle with my gauge ground, they share the same location, hehe.

Automatic Transmission Temperature Gauge Installation

Hey Dudes,

This is how I did it on my 98. Special thanks to 4Runner4Leon and theesotericone for answering my questions and very special thanks to mikentosh for helping me install it.

Here's the video and Enjoy the Show!

Tim (or anyone else who has gone through the process), am I able to use the existing wiring and sensor I installed for the autometer gauge to wire in the maxtow gauge? Also, is the gauge body size the same? I regret not going with an actual digital gauge so I can tell exact readings.
