Thinking of buying a 4Runner

Hi everyone,

I’m considering buying a new 4Runner. Finally test drove one today and liked it a lot. It’s a 2013 SR5 with the convenience package. Sticker is $36,309.00 Dealer agreed to $33,000.00. Seems pretty fair to me. Do you think it’s a fair offer? Is there anything I should look out for with a 4Runner?

Looks like a great deal to me, about 10% discount. Go back and buy it. The only thing to watch out for is info from this forum. You will find a lot of good info about mods and that will get you started on the mod trail.

Bought mine 6 months ago and glad I did. It's been on sand dunes, snow, mountain and desert trails.

It all depends on what you are planning to use it for and what type of vehicles you have had in the past and what you expect.

As far as what to look out for, nothing bad but a few things that are a little different from vehicles that I was use to are the following.

The brakes are the biggest thing that took me a while get used to, they really grab hold of the ground in a panic due to the specific system in the 4Runner, it's a different ratio in a panic and may seem scary until you get used to it.

Also the windshield angle tends to attract more bugs and rock chips compared to other more sloping windshields.

The oil change procedure is a little more complex too, but still very doable if you prefer to do it yourself.

I am very happy that I chose the 4Runner and at 37 thousand miles have not had even one problem yet.

Test Drive 2 different 4Runners

That sounds like a good price for it. I would recommend that you drive atleast two 4Runners. I had an 11 SR5 and to me the brake pedal traveled a long ways before it felt like the vehicle was slowing down. It also had a lot of nose dive. I now own a 12 Trail Edition and the brakes feel totally different, so I'm not sure if all/most of the SR5s are like that or if I had a rare bird. Otherwise, I love my 4Runner-

Thank you for you replies. Color is salsa red with tan interior. I have a 2006 wrangler, so I'm familiar with driving a body on frame suv. I've enjoyed it for 7 years and thinking it's time for a change. Never did any serious off roading and don't anticipate doing so, just beaches and up to the mountains for skiing and camping. Told the salesman I'd give him an answer 4-14. They offered me a better trade for my jeep than I expected, so saying no might be too tough for me.

Speaking as someone who just came from a 2010 4-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara- you won't regret it. Personally, I opted for the Limited as I was able to get a brand new leftover 2012 with approx 150miles for under invoice last month and a great trade value on my Jeep. I did test drive a '13 SR5 w/ upgrade pkg. Nose dive/body roll/XREAS suspension was noticeablely different and non-existent in Limited, though the SR5 was still better than the Jeep and a more soft/floaty ride. Other things for me on the Limited: more bells and whistles (auto & dual temp control, bigger nav screen, better sound system, nicer wheels, sportier ride, non-pretentious chrome accents). Also, SR5's in Canada come with the plastic wheel well trim like on the TE- wasn't a fan of that either. One drawback for the Canadian Limited is it only comes full-time 4WD but I am happy with the mileage so far and it is actually better than my Jeep! One thing you will definitely like: significantly more power and torque- this thing pulls its weight without much effort. Other selling point: reliability and re-sale value.

Welcome Jim. I see you joined in January, so I'm guessing you've done some homework. I have that exact SR5 and it suits me perfectly, although I admit to being enamored by the TE's style.

My only objection to the SR5 was the ride was a tad soft for my taste, and I didn't care for the rake, esthetically. So, a set of Bilsteins fixed both.

If you got $33k before trade, plus a fair price for your Jeep, I'd say you've done quite well.

We'll expect pics no later than Monday. Great color combo.

EDIT. One thing I did not do, and regret. Get the dealer to agree in writing to make any of the programmable changes you want. The seatbelt chime drives me wonkers, and my dealer won't shut it off.

Bought it

I pulled the trigger and bought it. Took a few pics and will put them up in a bit. Ita amazing how much larger and smoother it is than the Jeep. Coming home I looked down and realized I was going 75. I know that's not too fast, but 7 years in a Wrangler that I never pushed above 65, it was something. Now I guess I have to pay attention to speed traps again.

Congrats man. Salsa reds are definitely pretty. They only had the black SR5 when I got mine which I was fine with since it had the tan interior. Put over 22k in 14 months of ownership. Super smooth for long road trips and if you're not too heavy on the gas (and it's relatively flat) you can get 24mpg avg 70mph (at least that's what I was able to accomplish). Avg 20 on my mixed commute to work. Have fun..prepare for your mod wish list to empty your wallet the longer you stay on this forum eep:

Congrats on your buy!!! I bought a 2013 Trail in Salsa Red Pearl and adding Running Boards I still got it for less than $35K less than a month ago. I've been extremely pleased with my purchase. This is my 4th 4Runner so I knew exactly what I wanted. You'll have no regrets!!!!
