Third Member Swap?

Hello I have a 1999 Limited 4x4 Toyota 4runner. I found a guy on craigslist selling a 1995 Toyota 4runner front and rear diff. in a 4.88 gear ratio. Is it possible to just pull my REAR third member and swap it with the third member from the 1995 4runner?

Not 100 percent on this so don't take my word haha but the rears are the same 8" but the fronts are different I believe...let some others reply before you get an answer lol

there are differences between E-lockers and non E-lockers. if you want to add an e locker you have to modify the housing, if the swap is just a gear ratio there is no modification necessary. The front could be a different tale, the 96+ t4r have a 7.5" gear that turns opposite of the previous gen IFS diff does. so the rear you can swap, the front is useless to you.

Bingo, front diff is completely useless to a 3rd gen owner, no interchange there at all. 2nd gens didn't have a factory elocker available, so as long as your runner didn't have one, you're good.
 
As I found out the hard way Toyota used both 27 spline and 30 spline rears. May want to count the splines on your axles first. I think all 2nd gen were 27 spline (and DON'T trust your axle ID code on your VIN plate).

That's a 2WD third that uses 27 spline IIRC.
 
OP, keep in mind that there are differences in Toyota 8" (really 7.8") rear axles. There's the V6 version as well.

Wait, are you talking 27 spline vs. 30 spline on the pinion....not the axle shafts? AFAIK, all Toyota 8" rear 4x4s used 30 spline shafts.

I'm almost certain we were talking axle shafts - It is sitting in my side yard so I'll count again and get a pic. We did not know the history of the donor vehicle so it is possible there were some non OEM parts.

No biggie....that's a serious odd ball if it has 27 spline axle shafts. Shouldn't normally be a problem. 27 spline is 2wd for the 7.5" diff: https://www.ringpinion.com/DiffWizard.aspx

Apparently, the 2wd 97 4Runner never came with a 7.5" diff....but the Tacoma 2wd did.

Not sure on the Prerunner as most *I thought* had the elocker. Most 4x4s had the "8.4"...which is really just a 7.8" (just like the normal 8") ring gear with a "girdle" and better bearings and a bigger cover bulge to accommodate the girdle. If they had the e-locker...then they were the "normal" 8"....except the housing was modified to fit the obviously different e-locker.

never heard of an 8.4, the main difference between a 4wd taco or pre runner housing it the 4 link set up vs leaf spring. yes the base tacos with the 4cyl are 7.5" diff and likely a different spline count. the difference between the e locker and non e locker housings are a couple studs and a cut out to accept the shift fork. visible differences anyway.

Alright so I found this guy on craigslist selling a 1995 4runner front and rear diff. with 4.88 gear ratio. I know the front diff won't work but even at $350 that's a deal on a rear diff. The catch is the guy says they have 210k miles on them and is selling them because he is parting out the 4runner... I don't know its worth the gamble.

Also the guy is in Virginia and I am in South Carolina!
