Thomas' thread: Built not Bought

Check out James Dean Creations for ideas of what the factory graphics looked like.

Yea I've checked him out but there's nothing I can see on his site that looks like what the truck had. I'm not sure if it's bad practice but I've always liked the 87-88 SR5 graphics and although mine is an '86 DLX I think those would be awesome. I plot decals so if I could just find a pic of the graphics my truck had I could just make them. Probably about $40-$50 in material. Much better than $400.

Well went scrapyarding today. Not sure how it's going to work but I got a great set of seats out of a '94. I got the back seat with all the brackets and the front buckets all for $50. Hopefully they will work because they are blue and are gonna look great in the truck. Also found a 87 pickup that was pretty well stripped but to my surprise the Aisin hubs were still there. I don't really need them but got them for $20 so figured what the hell. I'll clean em up and put them on the shelf for a rainy day. The truck has a 5spd and it was real hard to leave it there. It woulda costs me about $300 for the trans/transfer and clutch setup. If I didn't have my wife's mini van it probably would of came home with me. If it's there next weekend it might get bought.

Not much as far as updates other than the ol' girl is still running well. However it looks like my progress will we slowed tremendously being as I now have a new "family" project. My wife has definitely been trying to be laid back about me ordering parts weekly and spending weekends traveling to the salvage yards in search of goodies so when she told me she wanted a project that the whole family could enjoy I couldn't really give her any crap about it. Well here it is.

As most of you know Boat stands for Bring Out Another Thousand so I feel this will put a large dent in the 4runner fund but the truck is up and running so at least I can drive it while slowly fixing her up. For those that are interested the boat is a '94 22ft SeaSwirl Striper. Motor that was on it was no good but I have a motor that "should" go right on it and be fine. I bought it without the motor and controls for $1300. Guy threw in the Garmin GPS/fish finder and it has a brand new radio with quite the booming system. Hull is solid as a rock. He even left both batteries in it (how long they'll last is anyone guess), but I've seen trailers like the one it's sitting on go for $600-$800 so I think I did alright. Only problem I have now is lack of full size vehicle to pull it. When the guy sent me the pics I thought ,ehh the 4runner will pull it. Once I seen it in person that thought definitely changed. She is quite a vessel. I believe getting it going down the road and pulling will be fine, it's the stopping I believe I'll have trouble with haha. 4runner doesn't really stop well as is, I can't imagine that would help. But anyways so to keep the peace in the household this was what I had to do. Hopefully it will work out for everyone.

Well first wheeling attempt went nowhere near as planned. I figured I'd just cruise down a power line next to my house that I took my 2nd gen down all the time with no problems, however in the past few months I guess someone's been playing back there and the tall grass disguised the ruts left behind very well. Needless to say the 4runner went down in some holes and both front tires just kinda hung there flinging water everywhere. Luckily my buddy had his truck at my house and we snatched it out pretty quick. I haven't had a chance to rebuild the double cardan yet so I had it in 2wd when it went in the holes and by the time I got it 4wd it was too late, aside from a lot of banging coming from the front shaft the 4wd seems to work good so that's a plus.

Well as I suspected I haven't really had time to mess with the truck now that all my buds are ready to do some Striper fishing but the Runner is still doing good. I actually put new u-joints in the rear today and figured out my pinion angle problem. Turns out what I had in my head of how pinion angles should be couldn't be more wrong. The lift kit I got had angled blocks in it. I figured it was to relieve stress on the u-joint by pointing the rear end upward. So the blocks were actually backwards. I had -1.5* angle on the trans yoke and +11* on the rear end. So I had a 12.5* difference. It actually wasn't bad but did vibrate. I spun the blocks and now have -1* on the rear so I'm .5* off which made a world of difference. I also got the front driveshaft pulled and getting ready to rebuild it. Still having a problem with the motor sputtering every few seconds just out of the blue. I swear it's like it's running out of gas and it always happens at around 1/2 tank but I've pulled the pump and cannot for the life of me figure out why it would stop picking up fuel at 1/2 tank. All well I guess I just got to keep her full.

Got the 2nd gen rear seat in today. It's been a pretty big project but worth it, this seat is much nicer and more comfy than the old bench seat. I'm actually going to do a write up on it for anyone curious about doing it to their own but I guess if you have a SR5 you basically already have what I got now. Stay tuned for more.

Found these on Craig's. Is this enough info to tell me these will work for me? Wasn't sure if ifs and solid axles are the same. Good deal??

About time I put these in. Still gotta wire up all the sending units. Been sitting in the pass. seat for about a month now. Got my H4 headlight conversion on the way with the upgraded wiring harness. Pretty stoked about being able to see at night.

Well maybe I didn't want to see what my OP was!! When I first started it it was 30psi at idle and it steadily dropped as the truck warmed up. It does go up with acceleration so should I be worried? When I did the timing chain I checked the oil pump clearances and all were in tolerance. I guess I should of just got a new pump. :AK47:

Also decided to rebuild a set of junkyard hubs I picked up and swap mine out. Ordered a Spartan Locker for the rear today and will be locking the front soon as I figure which route I want to go. Getting closer to being ready to hit some trails.

Holy S*** I can see!! By far the best upgrade to date. Went with the highest dollar Phillips H4's that pep boys had and I'm impressed. Glad I didn't waste my time with HID's. The upgraded harness was also a wise investment. I think including the bulbs I got about $120 into this and it's worth every penny.

Well been slow at work so Ive had some time to fool around with my truck. Got the trans straight for now. Turns out it was indeed the transfer case chain. I had planned on going ahead and 5spd swapping it but with work slowing down I decided to just get it functioning for now. Went to a local pick and pull and got a new chain for $15 and just so happened that in the rear of the 4Runner we were pulling it from we found a set of BJ spacers and 2" lift blocks. I threw them in the wheelbarrow for shits and giggles and the guy at the register just assumed they were parts with the chain haha. Not planning on putting them on my truck but maybe on the old 95.
Also finally got the locker in the rear tonight but I got a pretty bad wheel seal leak so I'm going to have to run and pick up a couple of those in the morning to button it all back up but I managed to get the third all back together and in the truck.
I went ahead and ordered an Aisin oil pump as my OP seems to be steadily getting worse. I was driving it the other day and once it warmed up the OP went to 0 and the water temp kept rising. By the time I got her home the temp was 235 which its normally 180 so I guess not putting an oil pump in when I did the timing chain is biting me in the a$$. :frusty: All well, new pump should be here Wed.

Oh and I forgot to show you guys my latest mod. We'll just call it trail damage...image.jpg
Well it was a tree. I was backing into my yard paying close attention to where my pump house is and forgot about my wife's Crepe Myrles and KAABAAAMMMM. Luckily my back glass was saved. Picked up a set of tailights also on my junkyard excursion for $20.

But I got it popped out enough to get the light back in. Luckily I got a buddy with a stud welder he's going to let me use. Gonna need quite a few studs for this I guess.
