Pretty crazy down in the Calgary area - a bunch of evacuations and downtown was flooded. Several feet of water on the Deerfoot. Not bad up here in Drayton Valley, except for the crew that's building the new North Saskatchewan bridge. The Brazeau reservoir rose 6' yesterday, so they had to let some water go - the river came up, flooded the construction area, and breached the coffer dam around the new bridge. There was a few gensets that got submerged, a Genie boom lift that was half underwater, and their office trailers flooded - quite the mess. Wiley West campground was evacuated because they're expecting it to be underwater by tonight.

Prayers with everyone, hope it passes with out too many casualties... Material things can be replaced, I know easier said than applicable...

I'm still here, though for some reason I've started developing gills and fins. I live in one of the highest points in the city so I'm fine. My office on the other hand is probably not. We were the first place to receive mandatory evacuation notices Thursday afternoon as we are only 2 blocks from one of the rivers. We don't expect to be allowed back for at least a week at this point, but since we're a software company we can pretty easily work from home. Fortunately at this point there has not been any reports of loss of life in Calgary, and I believe province-wide we're sitting at 3 confirmed dead and 1 missing but presumed. Extremely sad, but quite low considering some small towns were hit with flash floods to the point where people were being evacuated in the scoops of bulldozers, backs of dump trucks, on combines, and by boat and helicopter. Yesterday the fire dept. actually had their jetboat running on the streets around my office rescuing people who had ignored the evacuation order Thursday night.
I do have friends who were directly impacted by the evacuations and one who will most likely be returning to a completely destroyed house. Fortunately everyone I know got back ok - houses can be repaired and possessions can be replaced. Sadly there are plenty of reports of profiteering already with some stores charging $20 for a one pound bag of ice and $42 for a case of water bottles. Hopefully they'll get prosecuted once this is over
The sun is out now, all the rainfall warnings have been lifted (the flooding was caused by a combination of runoff from the mountains and heavy rainfall) and it's hard to believe there's anything going on from where I sit. When you see flooding in other places on the news it doesn't register the same way as when you see places you walk by every day under several feet of water. After watching lots of coverage yesterday I had to stop today because it's heartbreaking.

All the best to you and your friends and loved ones. Stock up on gas since it may be difficult to get deliveries if stations have lost power and/or trucks can't get there.
I figured the runoff from the mountains had to be a major factor.

The amount of damage must be unreal... Work called today and wants me and as many of my co-workers as possible to fly out ASAP. Between the insurers and government the claims will be overwhelming. Adjusters and contractors will be flying in from all over the country. Not how I wanted to see Calgary, but oh well.

Are you an insurance adjuster? Just a word of warning - get a very thick skin before you get here. Insurance companies have been running ads on Calgary tv stations about how overland flooding is not covered and people are pissed. Not so much about it not being covered, but that they're contantly being reminded it isn't before the floodwaters have even fully receded.

Yah i'm an independant. Not a good thing to be advertising... they are only setting up their employees for disaster. We had a meeting on it this morning actually. Flood insurance is available, but who has it is unknown. If you have any friends affected, tell them to check their policy. As an independent I could end up inspecting a property for an insurer who tells me there's no coverage and go back to the same property later for the government. I may even opt to come up later on when the government assitance claims begin. At least when they send you in, people are looking forward to seeing you coming. Rumor has it this could be one of, if not the largest catastrophy loss in the country's history.

They're predicting it will be the costliest disaster in Canadian history. Granted, we don't get hit by full force hurricanes or a lot of tornados like south of the border, but that's still saying quite a bit. The death toll currently sits at 4 people so it could've been much worse.
I went to my office this morning to pick up a few workstations for people and it was eerie. The neighbourhood we're in is pretty trendy and our street is full of restaurants, cafes, and pubs so it's always quite busy. Today the only sound was water pumps and generators along with the odd siren. No cars in the area, very little foot traffic, and only a few cyclists. Our parking garage has 3 levels underground and was filled with water. They expect it'll take a few days to pump it out, then the building needs to be inspected before they can turn the utilities back on and start letting people back in.

I'd think the damage is going to be well into the billions. Calgary is a boom town with alot of expensive real estate, and the majority of the properties in the low areas are million dollar plus homes with likely just as much in personal possessions inside. That Mike Vernon house along the Elbow was 10 million by itself. The Saddledome was flooded up to the 10th row of seats. I imagine most of their building systems have to be replaced. And all the businesses in the Eau Claire area, cars in building garages, landscaping, etc. There is just so much in the city that has to be cleaned or repaired or replaced. What a mess.
