throttle body gasket messed everything up!!

ok so today i decided to take the chance and cut that tb gasket to an O instead of a D, and low and behold my favorite lights ever come on (check engine, vsc and the other one. and its running like sh** what the hell did i do. did this mod f everything up?? please help

simply trimming a gasket for less turbulant flow shouldnt cause those problems, before you get too excited double check your connections and make sure nothing was over looked.

sorry for freaking out i know nobody likes that light after doing a mod. i reset the computer and it turned off for now so hopefully all is well. I checked all the vacume hoses and connections and it all seems to be good. so i duno it smelled like it was running really rich,

Did you check ALL of your intake tubes? Plug in the MAF?

yeah everything is the same, i dont know what happened. right now every once in a while it kind of delays when i push on the gas peddle.

turbulent flow is a good thing, it mixes the air and fuel better... the reason people cut the gasket is to get more mass flow not to get laminar flow

There was probably a reason Toyota made it a D shape to begin with. Sometimes I do mods where I "think" I'll be improving something that Toyota overlooked, then I usually end up having to buy replacement parts from Toyota.

Like everyone said, check all connections again and hope you find something that will fix the problem.

so the "D" shape is good too? which is better cause i just may go back with the original gasket if its going to run bad. oh and will i still pass emmisions with the gasket cut?? I think i just wanted to use my new dremel on something It made sence that more airflow = more power, better performance etc.
oh and yeah i looked at the TRD gasket and none of the dealers had it and i know TRD pretty much takes their time when sending their stuff. i didn't want to wait.

Are the TRD ones O instead of D? If the O shape was really better why wouldn't Toyota have just made it an O to begin with? Wouldn't an O be cheaper (less material) and easier to manufacter?? From my readings, it seems like TRD doesn't always make better things...for example, the leaky headers, rusty catback system, so-so air filter.

I agree. Although I don't know what cutting the D into an O does, I do not think it would lead to a CEL. It's probably a loose connection somewhere. Maybe try disconnecting the battery for a while and start it up again??

just so we can get it out of the way...you did clean the shavings on the gasket right? the trd o gasket is rubber but the oem is metal, if any loose shards were on there the air could have set them loose and shoved them down into the engine. unlikely, but seeing how you haven't yet figured this out i had to ask

oh ya i made sure it was all cleaned up before i put it together. another issue with that i was thinking is, the part i cut may have bent one way and it makes the TB stick out?? the delays are every so often maybe once or twice a time while driving. (mostly when the engine is cold) and i looked all over everything is connected right, the lights arnt on any more after doing a reset with the battery i just want to make sure all is running right and i wont have problems down the road ya know? it sure feels like there is a differnce in performance though, i feel better throttle responce and power. so i guess that could be good?

lets see if the hesitation goes away. go ahead and pull your ecu fuse, let it sit for 10-15 minutes and reinsert. over the next few weeks your system will adapt to the changes you've made. keep us posted i'm likely to do this pending more concrete results

the TRD gasket i got a couple of months ago was paper.

did you tighten all of the couplers to the afm, and throttle body? how about all of the silencers? how about the tubes on the front that go to the power steering, and fuel pressure regulator? You either have something hooked up wrong, or you have some type of vacuum leak. You may want to check the gasket again, you might have it in backwards.

didnt mean it was the reason he was getting a check engine light I was just clarifying the wanting less turbulent flow thing, and no none of us on this website are going to out think a group of 100 design engineers that developed the power train on the 4runner, there are very few things you are gonna do to your car with a dremel or wire cutters that are gonna add gains in one area and not take away from another, ie deckplate, intake silencer, trd intake gasket...

i think if you are unsure dont do it, and dont take us yahoos on the intrasnets word for anything much
