Thule Rack - Bar length

I've got a chance to pick up a nice set of Thule 450 Crossroad Railgrabbers for my '13 4Runner.

They come with 4 locks, one key system, and 2 load bars.

My only questions, is that the Thule site recommends a 58" load bar, and this used set comes with 50" bars. I see there is quite a bit of overhang on the 58" bars posted on here.

Just wondering if the 50" would fit, with less overhang? Anyone have any experience with this?

At a $150, it still seems like a good deal given the crossroads and locks are $240+$70 here in Canada. Optionally, Is it easy to swap out the 50" bars for 58" bars later on?

Any insight would be appreciated.

50" will definitely fit. It's what I use with my Gobi. Switching to a 58" later will be easy peasy. The rail grabs are designed to use any length bar. In fact, I have the 70" ones for when I need to transport my RTT and a kayak or canoe.

I went with 58's and I wish I had a couple more inches..... No seriously, you can always chop them down if they overhang too much. My problem is that I can't transport some of my boards side by side and have to stack. Hate to buy new crossbars and wish I would have thought about a bit more before purchasing.

pretty sure mine are the 50"s. it's been a long time, but i did cut them down so they don't overhang very much at all. i loves me a nice stack of fiberglass. :surfer:

Or don't cut them...just look for additional sizes and add to your system.

I realize you only have a shot at 50" for now. But I've been a long time Yakima user. Over the years I've bought 48" (the original), 60" when I found them cheap, and lastly a set of 72" bars. The latter I needed when I was transporting The Load Warrior (which is their luggage box) bookended by two tandem bicycles. The entire load was mounted on a Suburban. In fact, I was actually running a total of three crossbars on that trip to handle the tuning fork mounts with additional spare wheels and a road racing bike.

And yes I had to pull over at truck weigh stations.

My Yakima system has been adapted for a total of 13 vehicles over the last 20 years. It was a good investment.

Thanks all! I'm grabbing them tomorrow....

I'm going to keep and eye out for 58" and maybe 72" bars.... as mentioned earlier, I could always cut a longer set down. I've got 3 canoes and a couple small kayaks for the kids so the length will eventually come in handy.

But a single canoe/kayak and a ski rack should fit nicely....

Also I would recommend the fairing. It cut the noise down to zero! You can't even tell they are up there now. It used to get some noise above 45-50 mph.

I think for one canoe 50" might work, although 58" give more space to comfortable strap canoe. I got quite wide caboe though and 58" crossbars:

and yes, square bars whistle on highway speeds a little bit without fairing, but with strapped canoe you won't notice it : )

Got the rack today... what an awesome solid grab.

The 50" fit, but they are a little short... they will work for now with a canoe, kayak or a ski rack on.... until I grab a set of 58" or longer bars.

Already picked up the 725 ski rack with locks on ebay for $50 tonight! I think I'm gonna be wishing I invested in a Thule rack years ago for previous SUV's!
