Timing belt D.I.Y.

Hey guys. I've searched and searched and can't seem to find a thread for a timing belt D.I.Y. I have a '92 T4R with a 3.0 V6 and 135k( yes this is actual mileage with the original motor and tranny) on the clock so it's definitely due for a timing belt water pump and tensioner overhaul. I've only done one timing belt in my life and it was on a '99 beetle (God help anyone who has to do one) so I'm not completely comfortable doing mine without having a decent resource to refer to. Please post a link if anybody has one and I will be sure to bookmark it.

I googled searched "3VZE timing belt replacement walkthrough", and this was the third result: 1995 3vze Timing belt removal and replacement "With Lots Of Pics" - YotaTech Forums


I only skimmed it, but with that many pictures, it's gotta be good! Maybe read that thread and try others.
I would imagine the 3.0 timing belt is a reasonably attainable repair for the average wrench wielder. You'll save a bunch of cash doing it yourself.

If you can do a timing belt on a Beatle (pos) you can for sure do a. 3vz-e engine. Pull the radiator and fan and your pretty much set

Even better, you can leave the radiator in place, right? The linked steps with pictures just have you remove the fan, which would seem to give plenty of space.

OTOH the FSM on page EM-100 has step 1 as 'REMOVE RADIATOR'.

I'll be doing this sometime this summer....gotta learn sometime.

If it's your first time id remove it. Lots more room and if you don't have air tools Its almost 100% needed to remove it. First time I'd recommend removing it. You can always try it with the radiator in and remove it if it's in the way later

For what it's worth I am kinda up to my elbows in my son's 92.

One thing I found is mid way through 1992 Toyota changed belt tensioners on the 3VZE. If I remember right trucks built before 8/92 had the spring tensioner and pulley, the later trucks had the hydraulic tensioner and associated pulley like is shown in the 93 FSM.
There are a lot of threads on Yotatech and here's one covering the tensioner with FSM clips that provide part numbers.

Pretty good write up

Grumbum,
Here's a link I used when I changed my timing belt a little while back. It was actually of more help than the FSM and the pictures are great. I'm sure you're changing your water pump and thermostat also along with the #1 and #2 pulleys. Also, check your front main crank seal since it's easily accessible and easy to change while the crank pulleys are off. Another thing I did for peace of mind was a coolant flush since you have to drain it anyway. I just used the Preston detergent that you get at the auto parts store and distilled water. Also, not sure what condition all your belts are in but I replaced mine with all new belts as well. Hope this helps!

Thanks for all of the responses!! I plan on removing my radiator since it needs to be replaced anyway. It has 2 cracks in it that I sealed with some JB weld as a temporary fix :clap2: Besides, it just gives more room to work and for me to get my impact gun in there to loosen the old rusty bolts.

Hmmm, nice. I believe mine was built at the start of 92 or Dec 91. Either way, mine should have the spring like my 92 FSM's show.

(And it looks like the part numbers from when Toyota did the V6 recall on my truck on 3/6/2001 matches that. I see the part number from yotatech's thread:
13505 IDLER SUB-ASSY, TIMING BELT, NO.1
13505-65020 1988.08-1992.08 3VZE.. VZN100, 110, 13#

Mine also had 13503-65010, which looks like a slightly different part number than the others in the thread)

Spring tensioner

If either of you need a spring tensioner I have a Gates spring tensioner. Would let go for a good price. Accidentally ordered it not realizing I had the hydraulic tensioner at the time and never returned it. PM me if you're interested.
