Timing

I’m replacing my timing belt. I marked the belt and pulleys to the block before pulling it. I then transfer the marks from the old belt to the new belt. Upon installing the new belt, the marks I put line up, however the marks on the pulleys don’t. The marks I put on the cam pulleys line up however to double
Check my work I then release the marks Toyota provides do not. They are on the complete other side. I didn’t turn anything so I don’t know why the stuff doesn’t line up

The notch is at the bottom of the pulley but my marks show at the top.

I did. I talked to a mechanic and was told that the cams can be off by 180. I cycled the engine through by hand and the notches line up on every other rotation of the crankshaft or the 4 stroke cycle

As I remember (on my v8) it also required two full cycles of the crank to get all of the marks back to alignment (which if my memory serves me correct is what the FSM says to do). Just found it and attached. Check your specific year to be sure.

I think you have to do 4? revs to get them back on their original cam?

The cast "T" isn't the TDC mark for cams. It's the line counterclockwise to it. There's also a little divit on the crank sprocket at 12 or 1 o clock I believe that lines up with oil pump housing. The belts line for "crank" with arrow does NOT line up with the divit on the backside of the sprocket. There's a dimple on the FACE of the sprocket at like 4-5 o clock that lines up with the line on the belt.

This is all from memory but I've done a bunch.

Also, after rotating the engine a few times, the BELT LINES will NOT line back up with the sprocket marks. But all the sprocket marks should line back up with the marks on the engine. Does that make sense?

It depends on what year his is, I found a lot of inconsistencies in the FSM vs the post.

When my crank keyway was just before the bump on the block, and the crank line was near 6, the cams were at the 15 degree mark CCW from the T.

Looking at your cams, you must have a '05+ as it looks like you have the vvti cam.

Bottomline, your checking to be sure that your cams didn't move during the process and that you have the correct toothed belt. If the crank line is at the bottom, and your cam marks line back up from where they originally were, after 2 rotations, the cams are timed.

I cycled the engine through several times and the cams and crank pulley all line up to the TDC marks every two rotations of the crank. (crank shaft passes the dimple once) Thus I've concluded the belt was installed correctly.

With difference in what the marks mean year to year and in the write ups I've seen I don't like to recommend a certain mark on the cams to align to either, I just go based on "put it back together how it came apart" approach.

1. Set at TDC (ish), crank divet on mark on front cover, cams on whatever mark they end up on, not on the 180 degree off stroke.
2. Mark the old belt, crank (2 lines) and each cam.
3. Transfer 2 crank marks and each cam mark to new belt, count through teeth multiple times to be sure.
4. Install new belt aligning marks and you're guaranteed it's correct.
5. Spin over by hand just to be sure.

I don't care about the writing that belt manufacturers put on the belt, one full belt rotation after it's installed and they won't line up with cam and crank marks again, the won't ever line up again (okay statisticians, every once in a long while it will all line up again perfectly given the number of teeth on belt and each gear but you'll never see it.)
 
His engine is not in the vehicle, he's putting in a "new"/used engine hince the chain to lift the engine.

Gotcha, just realized that he was the same person as the other threads on the main page.

Also in case nobody else saw, he already completed the timing job. ����
