Tire gurus, help me settle a dispute

so im in an ongoing argument with my father, who told me id be regretful to put 265/70r17 tires on my 4runner, because stock size is 265/65r17. i told him that a difference of 1 inch in size wont be enough to change mileage significantly, highway rpms, or power. especially considering the tire im going from is 39 pounds and the one im buying is 40 pounds a tire. no crazy treads, no mud tires, just a size bigger. anyone on my side or am i crazy? :decision:

come on man, you're better than that!!

With my 32" duratracs (265/75/16 - 44 LBS) i still get 19 MPG HWY if i try. slight decrease in power but not much at all

which tires are you getting?

thats what i said! im looking at the destination at's, he told me im crazy to not buy michelins.....i get 22 mpg without thinking right now.

Destination AT's are a great choice, no one has a bad thing to say about them. That's what I was leaning to for months before a last-minute change to Toyo's. Upping the size a tad seems to be one of the first things everyone on here does.

ST MAXX is my suggestion. If anything try and factor the weight difference of the next tire you want to get. It will be a very big variable. GL

ha, I thought of this in the past, every time I read his sig, I try to remember seeing any pics.

as for the tires, whats the deal with older people being in love with michelin? were michelin tires top of the line back in the day? my dad questioned me when I told him I wanted to get rid of mine and put goodyears on.

I find it odd that someone one a Toyota forum would make a statement like that. Maybe with age comes intelligence or maybe you make your buying choices from advertising and not facts. Michelin make the highest quality tire in the industry. Their quality control and manufacturing process are by far the best. While Goodyear is out spending their money on advertising, Michelin is spending it on their product. Goodyear is the Budweiser of the tire business.

265/65/R17 is the stock size so no lift required
265/70/R17 is about an inch larger but probably still don't need a lift. It is the size I run but I do have a lift. Anyone running 70 without a lift?

i'm running 265/75/16 (basically the same as 265/70/17) and I rubbed like a MF. I had to trim the mudflaps and move the fender liner forward. I'm sure it would work on a stock truck, but you'd have some trimming to do

First of all, Michelin tires are over-rated garbage. We already hashed this out in another thread. How do you think they get 90,000 miles out of a tire? By using hard rubber compound. And hard rubber compounds simply can not grip as well as soft ones. Also, all you have to do is search the web and you'll see LOTS of Michelin and BFG (same company) tires with dry rotting. Many people find they can't even use up all the tread before the tire gets too old to keep in service. Just utter junk. For the prices you pay to get Michelin, you could have MUCH higher quality USA made tires on your truck.

Second, what hurts mileage is 3 things: rolling resistance, height (leverage), and weight. You already said the weights are the same. And you already said you're sticking with the same type of tire so rolling resistance won't be a huge issue. The height will be the only thing working against you. From real world experience I'm betting you'll lose 0.5 MPGs by going up a size.

Now, if you go with aggressive tires or heavier tires, your mileage will be destroyed. I have lost a hand calculated 1.75 MPGs since going to 255/75 MTs. That's 33 bucks a month for me (1300 miles per month) and it's just not worth it. So I'm selling my new 255/75s and I'm going back to a milder tire for this particular rig.
