tire pressure

my tire pressure sensor came on yesterday. i was wondering how much psi should i have? i checked my tires all around and they are about at 33 and one is at 27. also, is there a psi that can help me with my mpg? thanks.

Mine came on also yesterday driving to work. I checked the air pressure later in the day and all seemed ok. (Didn't check the spare while here.) Then when I started it up for the drive home, no light!

Perhaps taking the caps off and putting them back on "fixed" the problem.

The door jam sticker recommends 32psi as the running pressure. I normally run mine at 35psi just because I like a bit stiffer ride.

I usually set my tire pressure to 32 all the way around. By the time I get home from work, I up to 35-36 just due to normal highway driving.

If your at 36psi, isn't your tire pressure going to increase throughout a normal days drive?

Yes... Like you said, the tires will normally heat up 3-5 PSI just driving around... More, if your loaded heavy...

That still keeps me at or below 40PSI, well under max tire pressure...

I run 32 psi and found it to be the best unloaded pressure. A good way to check is to drive your tires through a dusty area and look at the tread coverage. 32 psi seems just right for my Michelin Cross Terrains. I know that 36 psi will give you a stiffer ride a little better gas mileage and maybe longer thread life. You also need to adjust your psi's thoughout the year because when it gets below 32 degrees your tire pressure will go down.

Run them at 28 psi and get there even quicker

Not worth it

Running a lower psi just to wear out the tires isn't worth it. It will cost you more in increased fuel than to just trade up to the tire you want (they might even give you something for the old skins.) You also add unnecessary powertrain wear (everthing has to work harder to fight the higher rolling resistance) and risk an Explorer/Firestone type premature blowout/accident.

You should set tire pressures when the tires are cold. Don't worry about what they get to when hot, it's meaningless.
