Tire Question: Help a fella out

My 2 cents.
Bought toyo at2 285/70/17 "P" rated. Did this before i realized how much offroading i was gonna do. Before the 4runner purchase last year, had zero offroad experience, now wife and i are addicted.

I am continually concerned about the durability of the Ps, but no issues yet. Just did White Mtn in Big Bear with TTORA last weekend. The trail was very rocky and I had no issues. So far, i am impressed with the toyos.

Next round of tires will not be Ps, just so i dont worry so much about getting a flat.

So far more mental concern than actual. Its the old Italian grandma worrying gene i have.

Buy them.

I had KO2 put on about a year ago, and I have had zero issues with them.

I bought them from Costco and those lugnuts can barely do a tire rotation correctly. If it wasn't for the steal of a price and the 2+2% cash back, I would go to a real shop.

Even had the dealer rotate them on my last service visit and no issues.


However....the guy your talking to probably sees a lot more rigs.....So he might have a better idea than some of us lucky people.

I had K02's on my previous vehicle, never had an issue with the tire.

That being said I went with the new Falken Wildpeak AT3W's on my 4runner.

So far I like the falkens a lot, the price was very reasonable and they have performed well so far both on and off road, and are suprisingly quiet. I only have a few hundred miles on these tires so time will tell, but I have found them to be a great alternative to the K02 so far.

I was at my local tire place that I frequent today and the General Tire rep was there with the new Grabber X3. Dude gave me some swag and let me compare to the duratracs. Initially 35 sizes will be available and the lugs in the pattern are solid. These should be released in the next month if you're willing to hold out.

I love my KO2's, no issues and smooth as a highway tire down the road. Just look at tirerack.com for AT tires and read reviews. The KO2's are #1 for many reasons.

Got my hands on Duratracs 285/70R17 a couple years ago,loved them.

Bought 285/70R17 KO'S2 before winter, ride was ok, Hate the look ( They are SMALLER )even with the same specs......

Got a deal and got back in DURATRACS with a 5 year warranty on flats explosions whatever !

There you go. We don't have much choice because law makes us have the snow icon for winters here so...

Here are some opinions from an industry insider who has experience with all of the previously mentioned brands and lines.

The old KO had verified uniformity issues on some manufacturing batches, resulting in poor ride and wear.
The new KO2 is much better, but reports of some of the same issues are surfacing. The KO2 does have many improvements from previous version and is a quality product.

Nitto North America is owned by Toyo and both lines share the same technologies and quality control processes. Many Nitto truck lines are manufactured in the USA. Every tire goes through a rigorous uniformity check before it leaves the plant. If it doesn't pass, it's typically scrapped.

What's on my vehicles? Nitto Exo grapplers on the FJ (previously Trail Grapplers) and Nitto Ridge Grapplers going on the 4R next week for test. They just mount, balance, and ride the way a quality tire should.

Never had a Nitto tire failure (or flat for that matter) with thousands of miles of hard, under-inflated off road use.

Assuming you've made a decision at this point but for what it's worth I had the same conversation with Slee - I also had the same conversation at another shop in Lakewood and so I figured there must be some truth to it.

Ultimately, I did go with the KO2's based on my previous, good experience with BFG. I love the KO2's but I DO occasionally get some vibration at speeds between 50-60mph, often I notice it after making any kind of aggressive or sharp turn that might put additional pressure on the sidewalls (ie pulling out of a parking lot onto a busy high speed road or straight onto an on ramp etc). Had them put on at the Discount Tire around the corner and paid the $25/tire for the lifetime warranty to save myself any stress about a shop telling me they wouldn't honor their usual policies. I think the Slee guys as well as the other shop I spoke with were both genuinely trying to make good recommendations, but as they said it's your truck - and not everyone has a bad experience with certain products. So I don't regret any of it as the vibration isn't often nor does it bother me too much - if it begins to, I can fall back on Discount's service.
