tires

I have a GEN1 1986 runner with a bored 22re that in throwing a 4 inch spring lift and solid front axle conversion on. My question is should i go with 33's or 35's? I wana keep lots of clearance and articulation and am not sure if the 35's will take away from that but on the other hand will 33's look goofy and small with a total 5" of lift? also thinking about gettin rid of the 5 speed and throwing an auto trans in it. I heard they are better for climbing as it puts less strain on the drivetrain. I have a lockright locker in the rear right now. I live in southern Utah so the rocks are under the tires allot!!! any suggestions ?

35s easy. could probably go bigger, up to a 37....

Keep the 5 speed, they are much better/stronger/get more power to the wheels.

Have you thought about gearing? .

My brother had an 85 solid axle with dual case, 5 spd and 35's the thing was great. He had 4.88's and was wishing he had gone 5.29's in the diffs. The auto soaks up to much of the HP that is already sparse in the 22RE.

I have 4:11 gears right now...Im going to do the solid front swap and make the front match the rear and think ima just gear the t-case down. My 22re is built and has plenty of power now so i think ill go with 35's. I think 37s will take away from the flex i want...Thanks guys!!!

Tire size will have no effect on articulation, that's going to depend on the suspension you are "throwing", whatever that means.
Taller tires will provide more clearance due to the increased height.
And of course a size like 35's means regearing your diffs.

I have around 7" of lift and I run 36x15.5. I had 33's with that lift and i could crawl inside my wheel well. but mine's ifs so i don't really "articulate" haha

Here's my old truck. I had 36" SS TSL on it with 5.29 gears. Do your self a favor and don't swap to a auto. 5SPD is much stronger. Go with 35s.
