To go Black...or not to go Black

Folks,

We are seriously considering an Attitude Black T4R. Having had a black vehicle in the past, we definitely are aware of the subtleties, but wanted to see your feelings. I suspect there will be some horror stories along with some praises!

Just listed my black truck for sale, will never buy another black vehicle. Just my opinion, too hard to keep clean and I'm lazy about washing the exterior.

went from a black 2004 tacoma to a black 2016 4runner in January. Had the truck 5 months, hit an elk and totaled it. Thought about whether I wanted to switch colors (maybe to blue or white) and decided I like the black enough when it's clean (which is rare in Colorado) to not want to switch colors. Got another black and I don't regret it.

It is extremely difficult to keep clean. So either commit to washing it weekly or don't worry about it. Otherwise, get another color.

Can't imagine anyone who wheels their truck would consider black. Imagine all those pinstripes from the trails. I guess it would ok if it was strictly a pavement pounder.

Echoing the detractors. I would never get a black vehicle due to swirls and premature fade in comparison to lighter colors.

Short answer....nope.

Longer answer.....I've owned about 40 vehicles, at least 10 of which have been black. My wife's current X5 is black, and that will be the last black vehicle I ever buy. My biggest issue is not how difficult they are to keep clean, it's more about how easy it is to damage to black paint. If a bird takes a dump on the BMW, and I don't clean it within minutes, it leaves a permanent mark in the clear coat. My black Tacoma was exactly the same. I bought the Tacoma new, kept it in the garage, and when I sold it 18 months later, i thought the paint looked like shit.

My current 4Runner is white, and it has sold me on white trucks going forward.

Never again. It's pretty much the 1 thing I'm always dead set on when purchasing a vehicle: It can't be black.

I vote no unless you like torturing yourself with detailing lol. My old mans silverado is black and I swear he will spend a day detailing it and it looks like shit 4 hours later from the dust if it doesn't get a car cover on it asap. Not to mention how easy it is to get swirl marks. Even the charcoal grey on my infiniti was horrible.

One thing I hate about the white is toyota seems to use a dark primer so rock chips stand out, our scion was the same way. But other then that white is easy, keep it waxed and clay barred every month and quick pressure wash weekly.

If you plan on or thinking of any offroading at all my vote is super white, silver, or cement. But it's your call I always say get what YOU really want. Told my dad the same thing about his silverado, I'll admit for a cruiser it looks damn good in black and he says the upkeep is worth it to him. To each their own

I'm on the exact other side of this. I only buy black. Last 4 cars were black, next 4 will most likely also be black. Although, I do like white 4runners, so that may be an option next round. I'll never have a silver truck again though.

DO NOT get black. You will seriously regret it. I detail cars as a hobby so perhaps I'm more sensitive to it but black is very tough to keep looking good. I did it once and will never again.

Black Trucks Matter...Tough to keep clean, yes. BA when it's sparkling tho. Pinstripes? CB that out. Badges of honor. If you don't mind the extra maintenance and issues, by all means get one. If not get something else

Truthfully, I think a black vehicle that is taken care of looks fantastic. My last black car was of a German variety, and hence has fairly "thin" paint. It was a serious PITA to keep from getting scratches/swirls/water spots in the paint:Three buckets to wash car and rinse the microfiber, followed by 3M cleaning wax, and then a "pure" carnauba...every other week. However, the results were pretty stunning, especially considering we lived in the tropics and did not have a garage or car port.

So, ultimately, we are sadly not going for black...even if it was a great deal. If anyone is interested in a '15 TE, PM me and I will give you the specifics.

Funny, ppl who like black always say WHEN it's clean etc etc ... but to KEEP it clean takes waaaaaay more work than I'm willing to spend. And besides, it looks WORSE dusty/dirty than most colors.

My Blizzard Pearl is my first white car, and it's the easiest color to care for of anything I've owned, by far.

My Blizzard Pearl is the first white car I've ever owned, and it's the easiest color to care for I've ever owned.

This. Before I got my Tundra TRD PRO I had a Subaru STI in white and it was the first white car I had owned. I'm about to put a deposit on a white 4runner TRD PRO and will likely keep white as the go to color from now on. So much easier to maintain.
