To those contemplating cutting off their top...

Not a 4runner, but here is my buddies Suburban. Near the end of the summer we broke out the sawzal and grinder and cut the rear of the top off. It has the rear barn doors so we just cut those in half too.

Well, we live in Oregon and it does rain here so he finally got a top made for it. I was expecting it to be pretty spendy, but labor and materials was only $500. Not bad, It buttons on the sides and back and has a metal rail that a rubber seam fits in on the roof the keep the water out.

So total cost: A pack of harbor freight cut-off discs, a sazall blade, a couple beers and $500 for a top. Who's next!

Kinda cool! It's different, and cuts some weight off the truck, not to mention, it gives that guy a 4dr truck with a bed........

Gives it that open air feeling I guess. He's been talking about it for years but was a little scared. I guess I kinda talked him into it

That Suburbans been through hell and back. Its a beast!

Started life as a 1990 baby blue heavy duty 3/4 ton Diesel. He bought it 7 years ago for $1,200 with 258k on the ODO fresh out of his 4.5 year stint in the Marine Corp. Diesel died shortly after. Gutted the diesel and swapped in a 350 (not-so-fun project). 350 threw a rod. Bought a reman 350. Blew the headgaskets (someone installed the T-state in upside down and overheated it during the break in).:bash: Replaced headgaskets. Tranny blew. Rebuilt tranny and T-case. Finally lifted it, cut off the top, and primered it black. He says he will never get rid of it and I believe him.

The ODO / Speedo stopped working 6 years ago so I imagine it has well over 300k on it.

Sorry for the story, but I've put more wrench time into that thing than any of the 40+ cars that I have owned.

that looks wierd, not liking it on a 4runner. if you are gonna chop it, leave it chopped, like mossyrocks or cubuff did. i dont mind the look of it on that old suburban though.

The chopped 4R reminds me of the Musso Sport, one of my least favorite vehicles. The Suburban looks alright.

Man, if you are going to do that, the rest of the vehicle better be BA or else it just looks stupid.

I don't like it for looks alone. I can appreciate the function for serious rock crawlers, but you lose safety and body stiffness when you do that (unless you properly add a roll cage), so it is a negative if you aren't actually realizing the functional gains.

Definitely one of the most aggressive mods to do, and one that changes the look alot.

In that case the above mod would make sense. Yes, unfortunately Toyota including other car manufacturers are unable to leave a good thing alone. This is the main reason why I am soon planning to upgrade my current old Toyota rather than buy a newer one.

Today my car had the annual inspection and the mechanic was "shocked", shaking head in disbelief, over the great mechanical condition given the high mileage on the odometer.

Unless the chassis is severely rusted these compact trucks are lifetime keepers. Which is exactly what I intend to do
