To those who replaced factory Nav

I will be replacing my factory Nav soon and had some questions for those that have done so already:

1. Safety connect, is it connected to the In-dash unit or separate?
If it is connected to In-dash unit, can it be wired to an aftermarket unit?

2. Has anyone been able to use the factory Mic with an aftermarket unit?

3. If I want to wire a CB Radio through the speaker, should I just do so at the time of the aftermarket Nav install or OK to do it down the line?

Anything else to point out to the installer?

Aside from eBay, any recommendations on where to buy the unit from?

Got my system from them, no deck, just focals all around, sub and processor. They do a decent job with installation (not great) but their prices were the best I can find. Installing just a deck shouldn't be an issue for them.

You don't want the nav unit. The car was stolen last month and they tried to take the navigation but failed, resulted in the face plate being loose. Everything still works but its not without a flaw. That's why I'm replacing it.

Can someone at minimum confirm if their safety connect button still works after replacing factory nav? Harper? Ducmonsta?

I can't confirm about the safety connect, but your insurance company didnt want to replace the nav since it was damaged during the theft?

They did, I opted for after market, as the factory nav isn't that great of a technology.

I'm not sure how people feel about crutchfield here but I have always had great service and support from from them. You can pick their brain and if they don't know they will look into it and get back to you.

Amazon is Amazon, usually great prices, no support really though, but not to be expected.

I avoid e-bay as much as I can. Only thing I get there is random hard to find items or 'classic' things.

1) Light is still green but never pushed the SOS button. Not sure who going to answer over here.

Hi Danny,

On the CB, if you get the Cobra 75 and do the Antman speaker mod, you can simply plug it into the AUX input in the center console. that's how I run mine and it works like a charm. switch the head unit to AUX and voila of course I'm the OEM head unit, so in your case make sure you hook up the AUX input with the new HU.

Of course for details on the CB stuff, see my build thread or Antman's.

Safety connect, is it connected to the In-dash unit or separate?Not sure as I used a harness adapter(TOYO-01) which made it so the Pioneer plugged into the factory connector and connected the JBL amp and all the speakers. The Safety connect worked til the free subscription ran out. I bought a 5 year Lojack service when new so I didn't renew Safety connect
If it is connected to In-dash unit, can it be wired to an aftermarket unit?........^^^^^

2. Has anyone been able to use the factory Mic with an aftermarket unit? I used the Mic that came with the Pioneer as it is plug-n-play but I guess you could splice the wires and make it work. I have mine right in front of me so it works better for me.

3. If I want to wire a CB Radio through the speaker, should I just do so at the time of the aftermarket Nav install or OK to do it down the line? I just custom installed a 2x2 CB speaker in the center lower door next to where the aux plug was for the cb. If you run it thru the stereo then it won't play music and the cb(aux) at the same time so I put in a seperate CB speaker.

Anything else to point out to the installer?

Aside from eBay, any recommendations on where to buy the unit from?I research through Crutchfield buy they are overpriced IMO and I buy through Amazon.Onlinecarstereo dot com has decent prices and hands down the best support as that who alot of installers use and call.That's who I bought all my adapters from .
Your installer may require or be able to get the stuff cheaper through them though .I struggled and put mine in myself.

The new 2013's are out and just introduced at CES last month and the Pioneer(AVH-8500BHS) and Kenwood look sweet.I mentioned before if I was going to do it again I personally wouldn't get Nav built in as I don't even use mine and just get a 7 inch DVD reciever. Google maps is just as good with free updates. Pioneer wants $120 for the Nav update SD card to update mine up to the 21st century TomTom .
I made a simple mount for my GPS enabled Nexus 7 and Tab 7.7 that sits in front of the stereo anyways for nav and connects thru bluetooth to the Pioneer and wireless tethers to my Note 2 phone for internet.

Ya,My stereo is usually playing my ipod music and the speaker on my Cobra 75WXST is not very good so I just did some research and bought one of these mini CB speakers so it would have it's own speaker. Mini Speaker SH2P4 Product Reviews. It was cheap,like $10-15 shipped and sounds clear and loud.

I trimmed the speaker case a little bit with a dremel and it fit right in that cubby hole to the left of the aux input and the door still closes.Looks like it was made for it. I took that aux input out anyways as I use bluetooth for interface with my phone and tablets and put my dual battery connect switch in it's place.Cheap easy mod,I'll take some pics when I get the time.

I have actually been eyeing this one - AVIC-Z150BH GPS Navigation | Pioneer Electronics USA . I hear what your saying about just using the phone connection but Phone's freeze and in remote areas you can't always get a connection.

I would just feel better with a dedicated GPS connection. In addition, it has all the app radio features just like (AVH-8500BHS).

1. Can I be a pain in the rear and have you push that button just to see if someone answers. I favor Safety Connect as it has automatic collision detection in case of a major accident, God forbid.

2. Is the mic in the pioneer superior to the oem mic, I know everyone will have a different opinion. Yours?

I will have to go through your thread to find the CB post. But that sounds like a good option as well.

1. I pushed but no one said anything. Where is the speaker for the SOS system? Also i'm not even sure this system works over here. I was surprised when i got the truck the light was green.

2. never used the oem for head unit had to be replaced with Japanese unit to work here.
