Too rich for my blood, I would rather redneck my horn than my scangauge mount tho

Eh. So that thread there offers plug-n-play pricing. You could probably find this horn (either in a junkyard or through some night time street scrounging in the retirement community) or find a used set on eBay. A trip to a junkyard around here would also net you the relay you'd need to hook this into the factory setup. Throw in $5 worth of wire and connectors, and you are set. There are plenty of holes behind the bumper that you can bolt these four horns to. It looks like a fun mod, I kinda wanna do it because it just looks fun, but I agree, looks a bit too expensive for something more than "fun" If you need help with the wiring side, if you ever do it, let me know.

The basic system is this. You have four horns that are activated when the hot (12V) wire goes live i.e. it receives power. The ground is constantly grounded. You only want the hot wire getting power whenever the horn is pressed. Instead of wiring the 12V wire straight off the hot end going to the horn, you wire a relay there instead. A relay just is a switch powered by..well power. You'd just run a nice, fat wire off of your battery, to the relay, and then from the other side of the relay, you run your wires to you horns. Ground the relay like you would your horns, and then you should be good to go.

I also cleaned-up and painted the arm mount locations, here a photo of the lower ones:

Nice prep work on all the rear goodies!

What paint did you use on the frame?

That's too funny, I was scrolling down this last page to type the same question. Paint looks great! I'm curious as well.

Also, what did you use to clean your TB and IACV? I have the gaskets to do the same but haven't known if I should use carb cleaner or what. Your's turned out great. Hoping this will solve my hot start issue.

Thanks Mike, you too 128keaton. I probably spend almost as much time cleaning and painting (dry time included) as the actual work. Being a CA vehicle, rust is not all that bad of course, and I want to keep it that way whenever I venture into various areas...

I like to use the standard Rustoleum flat black, the stuff that's like less than 4 bucks a can, and always on the shelf, for decades.

I seem to recall using TB and IACV cleaner, I think purchased a local Walmart as I recall.

Just got back from seeing my pop. A month or so back, I was concerned we might lose him...

Mike, others out there, Happy Father's Day!

I considered that approach, and for those who are patient, and are willing to spend the time, no doubt money can be saved. The horns, the most desirable ones, are not so easy find nowadays though. This guy finds and tests them all, cleans them up (sand blast and paint) and includes some nice brackets and wiring harness. I'll include more photos when I get to this mod, which will be when I do the from bumper, which will be after the the suspension, so some time from now...

Oh I'm not meaning to discount that thread at all. That amount of time that he puts into them is totally worth the extra he charges--his time is not free.

I just like doing things myself. Saves me money and makes me happy. No doubt others like doing the no hassle way, while saving time.

I'm like that too, believe me. I'm just so tapped-out with house projects...

This was one I was willing to pay premium for, mostly because finding a set of horns (A,C, D & F) was not easy, and trusting the seller that they actually worked was a factor too.

An important follow-up item.

I always re-torque after a short drive, and today was a reminder why I do so. Of the eight bolt/nut pairs (both upper and lower arms), seven did not budge, but one upper arm was loose. I applied some blue Loctite and torqued to spec, again.

Kudos to Brian (BrianSD_42) for caring enough to reach-out to me with the reminder.

I explained to him, once I'm confident that the fastener/s are snug, I mark (fingernail polish) them so I can easily tell if they loosen over time. As you will see, I also painted the bolt heads along with the threads and nuts. Provides rust prevention there, and also makes it more difficult for them to back-out. Here are a couple...

In viewing Mike's (octanejunkie) thread earlier, I was reminded that I have these here to install also:

Five Monstaliner samples, something I might tackle as soon as next spring:

The aforementioned bushings for the front, awaiting a helping hand:

I always re-check/re-torque critical suspension fasteners after the first drive but I'm too lazy to mark them, plus my nail polish is too expensive to waste on the truck [emoji140]

You used whiteline for the rear control arms but got energy suspension for the front?

LOL. I have a zip-lock bag of fingernail polish that I keep in the garage. Ex-girlfriends, a few from my wife too...

With my MINI Cooper S, I marked it up with the same blue fingernail polish. In less than a minute, I can check all critical fasteners in the engine bay, and underneath, a mirror helping...

ES for front and rear sway bars, and steering rack. Whiteline for the rear control arms, upper and lower...

I totally understand. Time > money.

Thanks so much!!! Glad to hear you got to see your Pop and that it sounds like he is doing better!

I meant the lower control arms in the front of the vehicle...

Have not purchased those yet Mike. But will... Whiteline, W53377A. Thanks for the reminder, just ordered!

Will tackle the front when I install the Kings, tie rods, LBJs, front sway bar, steering rack bushings, et al...

Hi Tony Ash here. When you do your LBJ's would I be able to come up the hill and watch/learn/help...? I need to do mine for peace of mind and would like to see it done.

Hey Ash, good to hear from you neighbor.

Of course. As I said, when that time comes, I plan to tackle a fair amount; and an extra pair of hands will be quite helpful actually. I'm such a neophyte on the Runner, I doubt there'll be much in the way of learning from me though....

I'm putting together a "Toyota" shopping list, likely from Camelback. So far:

LBJs = 43340-39465 and 43330-39585
Tie Rods Ends (inner and outer) = Don't have part #s handy
Probably some rear suspension shocks and springs...
Some fasteners too possibly...

Actually, if you need something that doesn't merit free shipping, you can piggy-back on this Camelback order. Maybe you need to order LBJs too, and if so, you'll get free shipping...

Mike, thanks for Tim and Sean's video. I'll lean on that and a few others...

A bit of a milestone last week with the house remodel... My wife and oldest returned home from a month abroad. Along came my wife's twin sister, her two kids, and my wife's parents. The bedrooms and bathrooms are finally getting used. Minus a couple minor leaks which I'm fixing when they are out of the house, all is going well. Her family leaves in about a month, and then I'll have some final bathroom trim and pocket door hardware to install, touch-up painting and the like... As expected, I can get back to 4Runner projects in the fall.

This showed-up a couple weeks ago:

tonyb66-albums-misc+photos-picture51718-img-5118.jpg

Still need to figure-out what I'll do in the rear...

Also got this:

tonyb66-albums-misc+photos-picture51653-img-5090.jpg

And since the install is easy/fast...

I didn't do this for any possible performance gains or even throttle response improvements. I like to pull spark plugs periodically for inspection, and this will make that faster. For me, it's worth it. Aesthetically, I do prefer the less cluttered engine bay too... Sound-wise, I have not detected any difference, at least with normal driving.

Probably no more updates for a couple or so months...

Oh, I just realized that I have space for just one more image in the albums here. Drat. I guess I've reached some limit... I was thinking to use Google Photos. Any issues if I were to do so?
