Took a video showing the effectiveness of A-TRAC

I found a loose rock/shale hill that was somewhat steep to test out A-TRAC. It was surprisingly effective.

I recommend watching it in 4K so you can see the wheel slip/braking in action.

I pressed the button and the red diff lock icon flashed for a bit then stayed solid (indicating engagement), but I'm going to double check tomorrow now that you mention it.

Its been a while since I have used mine, but I believe that the light will go solid green or yellow if its engaged. The locker can't be used in 4HI unless you have done the locker mod. The reason for this is very simple - people are stupid and would drive around with it engaged, leading to many crashes and destroyed drivetrains. Also, excellent video. There is a time and place for every type of traction aid. Having more than one at your disposal just makes the vehicle that much more capable.

Here is the verbage from manual..it might help others, and will avoid confusion.

Using the rear differential lock system
Before using the rear differential lock system:
Stop the vehicle, shift the shift lever to N and shift the frontwheel
drive control lever into L4 to see if this is sufficient. If
this has no effect, additionally use the rear differential lock
system.
Be sure the wheels have stopped spinning.
Press the rear differential lock switch.
Gently depress the accelerator pedal.
After the rear differential is locked, the indicator will come on.
Unlock the rear differential as soon as the vehicle moves.
To unlock the rear differential, press the switch again.
■Locking the rear differential
The following systems do not operate when the rear differential is locked. It
is normal operation for the ABS warning light and VSC off indicator to be on
at this time.
• ABS
• Multi Terrain ABS
• Brake assist system
• VSC
• Hill-start assist control
■The rear differential lock is disengaged when
The front-wheel drive control lever or switch is shifted to H2 or H4.
Never forget to turn off the switch after using this feature.
■After unlocking the rear differential
Check that the indicator goes off.
■If the rear differential lock indicator flashes rapidly
There may be a malfunction in the rear differential lock system. Have the
vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately.

Hmm, I've never seen it do anything other than flash red or stay solid red. If I have just engaged it and do not drive forward, it will continue to flash red until I move forward a bit at which point it will show a solid red icon.

I'll have to play around with it again today. I've definitely noticed a difference with it (being able to get going) off-road and in some snowy conditions (getting out of steep driveways) when it's in the solid red state, but maybe it's my imagination.

i've never needed crawl control or used it in a serious way yet, buts it's neat to play with on loose stuff like this

I've played with it a little at various speeds...sounds like stuff is breaking lol, b ut works awesome! There needs to be in-cab audio when it is doing it's thing!
