Took an X5 4.4 without trying

SOunds about right. Was the X5 stick or auto?
The V8 RUnner and 3.0 X5 is about on par. The RUnner will be a little faster, it should be a bit fster than what you are getting. But sometimes the individual vechiles differ some.

Depends which mag tested them the Runner seems to be consistent 7.5 -8.0 sec to 60 and the 3.0 x5 just over 8 sec.
The V8 X5 runs very low 7 to below 7 to 60, and then it just goes faster.

The V8 x5 will smoke the V8 RUnner by a pretty big margin.

BMW's are a lot faster than their specs lead to believe, I have owned them before.

Remember the RUnner has 235 HP vs 225HP for the 3.0 BMW. I had a 330CI convertible and those motors are pretty strong. The big difference between the ngines are that the RUnner makes good low end torque, great midrange torq, but suck at the top end, it feels strained after 4500. The BMW comes alive at 2500, its low end is ok, mid range is very strong and it keep that going to the top 6400 rpm.

Try driving next to each other at 50 and then slam the hammer and see what happens, you will be surprised at how quickly the 4runner reacts compared to the BMW. More torq.
 
Interesting claims that gets made against x5's. Make no mistake I drive a RUnner and dont consider even getting a X5. But on the road a V8 x5 will open a can of whip ass on the V8 runner, both standard off course.

The RUnner engine was never intended to be raced, it's a smooth work horse engine with a good torque curve in the low to mid area. It has no top end power, heck it stops breathing after 4500.

I posted some tested results.

DOnt be fooled by "beating" some people in traffic. They might not be going as hard as you do.

The only way to establish that is to go to a strip and do 1/4 miles with stock Toyotas and X5 and see. You will find the V8 runner is more in line with the 3.0 in on road performance. It will always win:), but only by a close margin.

Now, go make them work and it is a very different story. I have not seen any X5 on a trial anywhere, not even very easy ones. My RUnner is still stock and I have not seen any other SUV's that not built up apart from the Jeeps on trials.
 
For around the cost of the BMW I think I covered both on road fun, speed and the ability to carry stuff and go off road when needed. Check out my Sig.

now i love my 4runner and i am no fan of the x5, but there is no way that a 4runner can hang with a v8 x5.

on another note... my best friend also has a tundra 2 wheel drive and i beat him by the exact same margin.

I am very surprised at that. My mom's X5 is in for service and they gave us an X5 3.0i loaner. That is MUCH slower than the 4Runner. I never raced them, but on hills, I would floor the X5 and it would barely move. On the road, I thought the 4Runner has a lot more power. Hawk, I believe you because you actually raced them both. I am very surprised though!
 
in certain situations, each car has its strengths.

my friend and i had fun in our 6+ races. there was a camaro in the far lane at the light on a couple occasions. the driver was cracking up... it was the battle of the 8 second suvs.

anyway, as i said before, i am very satisfied with my 4runner and not at any moment while driving the x5 did i wish i owned one. not a bad car, but definately not for me. i am not exactly "bushwood material".

Today, I ended up driving an X5 3.0i and then my 4Runner later in the day. I took the X5 and 4Runner on the same road with some steep hills. I had to push the pedal to the floor to get up one of the hills and that was pushing it with the X5 3.0i. With my 4Runner, I just had to push it 1/2 way down, and I was moving quickly over the hill. Off the line acceleration also seemed a lot quicker in the 4Runner. I have not tested them head to head though. This is just my feeling after driving the two. The 2004 V8 X5 is another story. That would just put the 4Runner to shame. 03 V8 X5 would be close, but the X5 probably would be faster by 1/2 a car length.
 
one reason the 4r feels faster is the drive by wire throttle. throttle response is very quick in the 4r.

i think the v8 x5 would pull more than half a length on the 4r, if the 4r could barely beat the 3.0. but it really depends on the trap speed.

let's all admit it... we have the cooler ride :)

I am sure the X5 also has drive-by-wire. I believe that all BMWs after 1999 or 2000 have drive-by-wire.
 
maybe so thai. it would not surprise me.

but also, the throttle can be mapped to have a more aggressive curve. chevys typically have an aggressive curve to appeal to younger buyers.

the x5 didn't have as much bite with small inputs, but if you floor it, it gets up and goes quickly.

Why a new thread? This is just a repeat of the other 4Runner/X5 thread with the exact same posts.
 
So the V8 X5 are fast but I'll admit it was not an even race, when is street racing ever even especially coming out of the toll booth and your just tryin to get ahead of the slow cars, we where both in that position and I was more or less checkin his ride out then I was racing, but he did seem like his engine was roaring more then mine but I was coasting and he went to pass.

I like the X5 especially the 4.6 and 4.8, starting to see more 4.4 on the road but still way more 3.0

My friend drives his fathers 3.0 X5 and compared to Explorers that they have, the X5 3.0 is sweet but compare it to a 3rd Gen 4Runner, the 3rd Gen has more power and just feels different but the 3.0 does handle well but needs more power for hills, basically the 3.0 is nice but the engine is hauling to heavy a load.

Now the real question is the X3:D gonna go pick on some of them;):
 
The 3.0i X3 will have the same engine as the X5 3.0i. There will also be the lower 2.5i engine. I am pretty sure that the 2.5i X3 will not even come close the the 4Runner. I know the X3 is a lot smaller and lighter than the X5. I guess comparing the Sequoia and the 4Runner V8 is like comparing the X5 3.0i to the X3 3.0i. Anyway, never driven the X3 at all so I cannot make a good judgement.
 
When I test drove the X3 3.0i, I really liked that car. The handling of it was great, takin u-turns going 85, was fun. Loved the braking of the X3. But there is no way it is faster than my v8 4runner, but sure can out handle my runner.
 
Today I came upon a porsche coming out of the toll booth, the thing is badazz I pulled away from him like he was in reverse, oh wait that was him:arrow:
 
funnny... on the post before... if a v8 4r barely pulls an x5, how will it pull an x3 with the same 3.0 motor?

Back to the 1999 SR5, what does the "Power" setting on the ECT button do? Cause the transmission to shift later? Give me even worse gas mileage? :D

0-60? That's what the Z is for...
 
No offense intended, but....what age are the people purchasing and driving 4Runners? These vehicles were not intended to "race" other vehicles.

I find it extremely funny, yet sad, that people "race" SUV's. That's like taking a Yugo off-roading :)
