Torque App - working formula for tranny temp

There's been a lot of questions about whether the Torque app will log/read tranny temps. After doing a lot of research, I finally found a solution that is a compilation of several sources of information. I finally got it to work.

First, you have to have a bluetooth OBD reader, like the one I got from Amazon for $15. I bought one that had a lot of positive reviews, and it was labeled "ELM327". Here is the link:

You will also need to purchase the paid version of Torque, which is $5.

Once you have it on your phone/tablet, make sure you download the free "Torquescan" app. It is an addon, so it will not appear as a separate app. Once it downloads, it is made a part of the Torque app and will appear as an option in Torque.

Once in Torque for the first time, setup your vehicle profile, which will enable you to start using the app.

From the main screen, hit your menu button, then choose "Manage extra PIDs/Sensors"

Hit the menu button again, and choose "Add custom PID"

Hit "OK"

Under the first item called "OBD2 Mode and PID" enter "21d9"

Under "long name" choose whatever you want. I typed in "Trans Custom"

Under "short name" choose whatever you want. I typed in "Trans"

Under "minimum value" leave it at "0" or type in "0"

Under "maximum value" type in "300"

Under "scale factor" leave it as "x1" or type in "x1"

Under "unit type" type in "F"

Here's the tricky part - under "equation" type this in, EXACTLY, without any spaces:

(((((G*256)+H)*(7/100))-400)/10)

That's *five* parentheses at the beginning! Just be sure that there are six total parentheses facing to the right, and six total to the left.

Leave the rest blank and hit "OK"

Now when you want to add a gauge to the display, you should see "Trans custom" or "Trans" or whatever you named it at the beginning. The darn thing works!!!!!

For reference, I have a 2008 V6, but I will assume the PID's are the same for others in this generation of 4Runners.

Thank you for this! Ive been going back and forth between this app and DashCommand trying to find something like this that works.
 
Great work! I ended up going with the Scanguage II due to torque not getting trans temp, but who knows, if it works good enough, I might remove the Scanguage.

Again - nice work!
 
Quick update. Just took a 240 mile trip and it's working beautifully. Someone else try this and let me know how it works for you.
 
Tried it today around town. It read anywhere from 130F to about 160F. Seemed liked it was pretty accurate.

Does anyone have a link to an OBD2 bluetooth adapter that will work with an iPhone? I checked out the link above and it's Andriod only. Amazon has a bunch of choices, but I'd feel more comfortable buying one that has already been proven to work.

I'm not sure if I have the exact same OBDII adapter, but for me the transmission temp was pre-defined in the list of sensors in the Torque app. It's cool that you figured how to add more sensors, I'm just just perplexed by the fact that you had to add it. I have an '04 V8 4Runner, maybe the difference is the ECUs. Strange.

thanks for the write up. I just ordered that linked adapter.

mine is on the way, it would be cool if its already on there. either way, its nice to know it can be monitored either way.
 
I have this set-up but haven't had time to hook it up yet. Any risks by keeping the blue tooth adapter plugged into your car all the time?
 
Kind of confused about this post. From my research, I thought after 1999 models, the 4Runner should be able to send transmission temperatures from the ECU by default (And within Torque Pro) without a custom PID.
 
It appears that this works on the V6. I'm getting fluxuating transmission temps around 150 degrees. Can anyone confirm that this is the normal operating temp for the V6 transmission? It seems a little low to me
 
NOVA - in Houston heat mine is generally running in that range. After 15+ miles of stop and go traffic, while sitting in one spot, it has gone as high as 160-170. Once rolling again, it goes down a little. Sounds like you are spot on.
