Did the airbags deploy? If so, sure sign that they will total it. My old 98 was totalled, because the airbags went off. They are $2000 EACH to replace. :awais: Glad everything came out okay. Just be glad that you were in an SUV, not some small compact car. Could only imagine what would've happened if a Civic would've run into a house.

On the bright side, now you can get a 4WD 4Runner!! :biggrin2:

Damn, your bull bar might have saved your life. Whichever part bent it, either the house, or the cable, might have come all the way up into the windshield if it wasn't for the bar. Looks pretty bad.

Say a car/something pops out in front of you. Your natural reaction is OH $#!% while you slam on the brakes and swerve. Without ABS the person would lock up the brakes and turn the wheel only to continue sliding forward (no control) and hit the car/object. With ABS on all the vehicles if a car/something pulls out in front of you and you slam on the brakes and swerve, you still have control of the vehicle and turn off the road and hit any number of roadside structures. So with ABS the amt. of off road single car accidents is a lot higher than it use to be (*this is a very specific category). The ABS pros greatly outway the cons, its just some of the cons are like Snookster here, but with tragic outcomes. If it were a van full of people he swerved to miss, than the ABS is wonderful. If its a squirrel, than its a "Total Bummer" (obvious understatement).

Okay, so you're saying that the extra control afforded by ABS causes most people to avoid the object they were trying not to hit (such as another car), but causes them to hit something else instead?

I don't see how that increases single car accidents, unless the "other" struck object is something other than a car. This seems like a bit of a fallacy to me. The real question is how many accidents are avoided completely because a driver in an ABS-equipped vehicle was able to avoid an accident altogether. Of course there's no way to get any hard data, simply because there's no way of knowing how many near misses occurred in an ABS equipped vehicle. The best that can be done is to estimate the amount of accidents that might have happened by using trend data. Unfortunately, that may be far from accurate.

GOOD THING U ARE OK
DUDE YOU CAR LOOKS TRASHED!... WHAT YEAR? PARTING IT OUT?

i cant tell you howmany times abs has saved my A$$.

many times going down a hill (towards a stop sign and trying to stop), snowy/icey and see another 4runner comming across the road infront of you... scarry

or when your on the highway at night in traffic and a car just slams into the guard rail infront of you (not like that happens much) and with out the ABS my tires would have just locked up and slid into those car....

i am glad i have ABS

Not to sound ugly but here is when good driving skills come into play. Knowing how much you swerve based on our situation (speed, vehicle type, road conditions, off road structures etc)

Example: Me and my friend were in his dad's grand cherokee on the highway, I was cruising behind a Superduty doing about 80mph. The superduty in front of me was not paying attention and ran right into the back of a kia doing about 50mph. I hit the brakes and eased over as much and as fast as I could safely. I only ended up barely sideswiping the ford. My friend was saying"why did you swerve?! I knew at 80 mph and an abrupt manuever would have caused that Jeep to go flipping down the highway. (that thing leans on turns at 10mph)

glad to hear no one was hurt, you live and learn.

I am not anti ABS. Like I said earlier, the "ABS pros greatly outweigh the cons." I would not want to drive a vehicle without ABS. ABS has saved us all MANY more times than it hasn't.

I don't need hard data to tell me that ABS is decreasing wrecks (it obviously is). I never said ABS is increasing car wrecks across the board . As I said earlier, the "category" of accidents that increases is "very specific" to off road single car accidents.

And yes even steven as I said earlier, when you swerve with ABS you are increasing your chance to hit a "roadside structure." You actually decrease your chance of hitting a car w/ABS (as I said earlier "pros...miss van full of people").

Not all people react like gapboi does and take into account the present situation (and surroundings) and just slam the brakes and crank the wheel.

The study was done comparing the amount of "off road single car accidents" that were claimed prior to the standardation of ABS and after.

so i went to the body shop to look at the runner today. OUCH! It is pretty much totalled. Luckily i have good insurance. The steel braided cable that I snapped did a lot of damage to the roof and undercarriage. As the runner is a unibody they will have to replace the whole body, if its not totalled. I unfortuneately don't have any pictures of the runner in the house. I did snap a few shots at the body shop with my cell, now i just have to figure out how to load them. So as sad as it may be, I'm kinda hopin they write it off, as I don't really want to drive a vehicle around that has has this much damage done. I will keep everyone posted.

ps. I found out that the house is a seasonal home, so no one was home.

Whoever told you the 4Runner is a unibody is either flat out lying or has no clue at all. The 4Runner is, always has been, and I truly hope always will be a real truck with body on ladder style frame construction. The Last style of Pathfinders were unibody, but never the 4Runner.

the air bags did not deploy. I am told this is most likely because I was not wearing my seat belt.

And you better believe I've already thought of the 4wd aspect.

I will know on the 19th when the insurance man goes and looks at it, what the verdict is

what's everyone's thoughts on the verdict? totaled or salvagable?

If it's just the front-end damage, it might be fixable. Depends on what kind of damage is under the hood. If the damage is severe enough throughout the body, it might be totalled. Hard to tell from those cell phone pics, though.

And I don't mean to sound like your dad, but WTF are you doing not wearing your seat belt? Especially when you have a wife and kid? :bash:

Is the damage just the front like your pics show? Do you know if it still runs and drives?

evidently it still runs, but does not drive. The roof is shot, I will need new running boards and fender flares, new front tires, windshield, since I went through a fence the sides of the body will need tending to. I was also told that there is some pretty serious under body damage. I think i heard someone say that I ran over a metal power box.

I was told that my front end was resting on on the fondation of the house. They needed two tow trucks to pull it out.

we will se what they say next week

Then unfortunately it is probably totalled. Sorry bro.:(

Glad you are okay though.

IMO with your sides messed up and the unknown underbody damage, I'm gonnna guess its totaled. With regards to totaling it out, I've had a couple friends that the total was a benefit and some friends that have gotten hosed on totaling out their vehicle. I don't know what the differences where. x2 on wearing a seatbelt. One $65 fine and now its the first thing I do. I wonder why the insurance co. can't get to the car until the 19th?

I have mixed emotions about them totaling it. I looked for months to find the right runner. I know I will most likely get more money than what I paid for the truck. I am now wondering if the do total it if I will be able to keep the 17" sequoia limited wheels. I know i will be ripping out my audio system. but I don't have the stock rims and tires. any suggestions ?

They are not going to let you take the wheels unless you have something to replace them with unfortunately. Check Craigs list or something like that for someone selling some cheap Tundra steelies or beat ass 4Runner wheels. If they are cheap enough you can offset the cost by selling the stock wheels on the next 4Runner you get and that way you can keep the Tundra Limited wheels for your next 4Runner.

I've never had to total out a vehicle so I could be completely off on this. But if you tell them they are aftermarket wheels(which they are), could you have them add what you paid for them to the payment they give you?

Yeah, but they're going to give you maybe $50 or something for them. So if you do have some spares lying around, I highly suggest putting them on. You will be able to go and get your stuff out of the vehicle at the tow yard, so do it then. Even some GM wheels fit, so look for those, too.
