Totaled 1999 4Runner... what to take???

Son totaled our 1999 4Runner the other day. Truck only had 160k miles with
a recent tune-up. Luckily not his fault. 90 year old man turned left right in front of him. Now I get to deal with his insurance company and battle convincing them of its real value!

But before it goes to the grave, what if anything should I take from it? I do have a 2001 as well so I'm grabbing a few things that are better off than my 01. I'm planning on getting another gen 3.

Anything super hard to find or expensive that's an easy grab?

Damn. Hope your son is alright.

You probably shouldn't take anything off of it unless you plan on buying it back from the insurance company. anything you take off, the insurance could deduct from the value of the vehicle. Honestly, you'd probably be better off just fighting for some money due to "pain and suffering" than fighting for more money on the property damage end.

Insurance companies usually use a third party company to determine the value of your car and they do so by finding "comparable" vehicles in your area. So, unless you want to put a lot of effort into proving that the comparable vehicles are not actually comparable, you probably won't get much on that end. Much easier to get money on the personal injury side of things.

If you aren't in a rush, file a claim through the other driver's insurance and fight with them about it and see how much you can get out of them. If you think it's not enough, file through your own insurance and see how much they'll give you. Then pick the best one and be done with it. Good luck.

Also, when filing through the other person's insurance, tell them you want to cash out for the rental and ask to be paid 40-50 for a comparable sized SUV for 30 days or however much you can get out of them. In California, you're entitled to cash out for rental as a claimant. That'll get you another $1000 right there.

Yes... but unless you put it on there the insurance company is expecting to recoup the losses by selling the vehicle to a scrap yard for those same parts.

My insurance company just totaled my truck for the same type of accident. They gave me about $5,000 for it I bought it back for $375 I put about $800 into it and truck as right as rain. I bought a parts truck and use that for most of the body panels that were messed up. The insurance company only give you salvage value 375 at least in New Jersey.
