Totaled 2010 Trail Help w/ Geico

Very sorry to here about your accident. You should/will receive "fair" market value for the car. You can negotiate for a higher settlement based CURRENT prices...which includes supply and demand. We all know how difficult it is to find a Trail new or used. Do your own homework about Trail prices around the country and be prepared to show Geico your findings. You WILL receive more than your current loan payoff (assuming you owe less than the value). If not I hope you had GAP insurance. I have a 2010 Trail Edition and I bet you could receive 33k-36k from Geico...hope this helps.
(Trails are so rare here in Texas I bet you could get 34k trade in...)
I do not sell insurance or cars, just my experience.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I can't find more than 4 trail editions for sale within a 500 mile radius.

Everyone i found is a mislabeled sr5 or limited. The real trails have been 34k-36k for 2010

Bummer all around. I actually would have really been interested in your 4Runner (am in the Couv) if I hadn't found a good deal on a Limited just a week or so before you posted yours for sale; awesome upgrades, BTW. Three things:
1) As someone has said before, be sure and let Geico know the mods, costs, efforts, etc. you put into your 4Runner.
2) Be firm, don't get emotionally involved, and tell them what you know ... that fair market value for the very (limited) trails out there are high, and the price being demanded continues to keep them that way.
3) At end of day, you're alive, as is those with you in the 4Runner... so no matter the outcome, the rest is gravy.

Best of luck, man.

Do not be throwing around the words "fair value" to the insurance company. In the insurance business and dealer's, Fair Value equals wholesale. You want retail market value based on 2 to 3 vehicles being sold within your general area and expect to get the average of those amounts. If you get more, take it and run. Options added to a vehicle do not usually bring much of a return, just like manufacturer options on a car that you trade in.

I wish you luck dealing with Geico. I was rear ended by a geico insured driver in my FJ Cruiser in May. I took my truck to my Allstate estimator and was given an estimate for $2500 worth of damage. A week later Geico was finally able to see me. Their initial estimate was $83 plus labor. I left with a check for $153. I took it to a certified toyota body shop and Geico ****ed them around for over six weeks. Four trips for new estimates and dozens of phone calls between my body shop and the estimator they finally settled on the total. It was nearly $2800. I am still waiting on the medical claims... Geico seems to have a bad habit of delaying if you are a third party claimant. I haven't sued them yet but we're just about fed up with their delay tactics. :vader:

Glad you guys are ok after the wreck. Hopefully your claim won't make you crazy.

Shouldn't your insurance company be the ones to get you back on the road and they should be the ones to go after the other persons insurance? Your insurance company is supposed to help you when someone hits you not leave you chase them alone.

When I was rear ended, I sent my insurance company the information of the woman who hit me, My insurance sent an adjuster and they took care of the repair of my vehicle within the week (minus my 500 deductible). My Insurance insulated me from having to deal with them directly. I had a Geico Policy. They were very good!

GEICO is the biggest bunch of crooks out there! I had them for 15 years not a single accident and then when I was in an accident (NOT AT FAULT) with an uninsured motorist... I GOT BENT BY GEICO! I wish you all the best with them.... I have since had USAA and no one can compare. That said it it is a total loss they will pay you RETAIL value.... the mods you can forget about unless you had them accounted for on your policy. Go to Edmunds.com and figure out the retail value according to your options/mileage/etc... mark it as EXCELLENT value and you can pretty much count on getting that as a pay out.

is it a good or bad scenario, does anyone know?

Arguably since both drivers are insured with the same company they can't use the mis-communication or "other side is not responding" excuse.

That's the right answer. If you're a person dealing with a corporation, you're not going to show up on their radar until you send a subpoena. Progressive, Geico, USAA, all are the same with that.

You pay your insurance company to represent you in a claim against another as much as you pay them to pay for claims against you. That's how you get things to happen.

Holy smokes, getting NADA or KBB 'excellent' retail valuation on your write-off is the best you can expect - it's what it costs to buy something that's likely better than what was written off. What did you expect? A Porsche valuation on your 1988 Tercel?

The above is an example of unrealistic expectations, and if you make a scene about it to boot, you won't be anyone's priority.

you misread my post.. GEICO sucks and screwed me... a REAL company would give excellent retail.. GEICO gave me below fair...

looking back at my post I see how you got that.... it should have re "With that said they SHOULD pay excellent retail"

Glad to hear you were ok, obviously that is the most important take-away here!

I have only had great experiences with GEICO. As with any insurance company, there may be delays in paying out claims for various reasons. There are MANY factors outside an insurers control that contribute to these things - so take what your read with that in mind. Typically, when YOUR insurance carrier is handling a claim it will go faster/smoothly because they don't need to make contact with other parties before getting you taken care of.

No insurance company is going to pay more than they owe and no company can fix what they don't know is wrong. In my experience, GEICO has always made up for any mistakes and has taken care of me.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I will miss t4r for all the great community it has to offer. I will definitely let you guys know how it goes and what they offer me. I did the math today and I had a little over 4k aftermarket parts on there since I luckily removed the others. I hope you guys do t have to go through something like this.

I had an option to use my insurance company (Allstate). I had a $1k deductible and while I would have got it back eventually I opted to just have Geico deal with it. I have to say they are very personable on the phone but the local adjuster and their constant stalling just drove me nuts. My Allstate adjuster was fantastic on and helpful in guiding me through dealing with Geico. Ultimately I did get my FJ fixed beautifully. It just took sooooo long. Why? Don't know.

I learned that having all the documentation for a claim including multiple estimates is essential to get paid what you are owed.
