Towing a teardrop camper

Hey I have a 2023 ORP and a TCTEARDROP as well. We have an Oasis 5x10 so maybe 1250# wet. We love it! How have your transmission temps looked when towing it? Anything alarming? Do you tow in S4? Ever tow in 5th on flats?

When I used to tow with my v8 4th gen I always towed in 4th. I do the same with my 5th gen, but the manual doesn’t actually say “tow in 4th” like it did for the 4th gen. Thanks!

Yep, mostly keep it in S4, almost never in D. It's gotta be flat with a tailwind or a long downhill for me to bump it up into 5th. Towed it to Badlands NP and the Black Hills in June. As far as temps go I like to drive to keep both below 200 (if that makes sense), and really only the torque converter temp has ever gone above 200 while climbing and it falls back quickly when it locks up a again.

No problem with towing

Newer member here. We have a 2023 Escapod and it tows great. Barely know it's there. The 4Runner has enough power for most terrain. Uphill it searches for gears sometimes which is a little annoying. Other than that, been both on and offroad with it and handles great. Hope you have some great trips whichever rig you choose.

more towing success with a 4Runner

I have been towing our Airstream Basecamp 20X for the last two years with our 5th gen.
I do use a frame mounted class VI WD hitch and run 4.88 gears. We have made the run from Dallas to Big Bend Nat Park and it's sister Big Bend Ranch State Park. two times with the trailer and another run scheduled for late Jan. 2025.
For us that is about a 1600 mile round trip. The 4runner has no issues and rarely down shifts to 3rd thanks to the 4.88 gears.
The Basecamp 20X has a 525lb tongue weight and a 4300lb gross trailer max.
Airstream's smaller Basecamp 16X is somewhat lighter than the 20X.
