Towing with 2016 SR5 Model

Hello,

When I bought my 2016 T4R I bought it with plans to tow a smaller camping trailer with it and I thought I could just go half the rated towing capacity and I should be fine. The rated capacity is around 11,000 pounds, I think, and this will put me at 5,000 pound maximum that I should tow.

I won't even tow that much, maybe 3000, maybe 3,500 pounds. But I am reading here and there that the stock model needs some improvements before it can tow safely. I am sure there are existing discussions on this forum that I just didn't find and I would appreciate a link to them if they exist. I also appreciate any input from any of you.

The 11,000 lbs is the gross combined weight which is both the vehicle weight and the trailer weight together. The max trailer weight is 5,000 lbs. So you should not pull anything heavier than 5,000 lbs. This is all spelled out nicely in the owners manual.

There are tons of threads on this site about towing. The easiest way to search for them is to use google and make sure to note 5th gen 4runner after whatever it is you search. You should then have lots of useful information available then.

You will be fine at that weight but I would suggest some air bag helpers for the rear coil springs to help level things out if you are towing frequently.

I pulled a 3400lb travel trailer with my 4th generation 4runner with v6. A lot of people suggest a air bag setup. A good weight distribution hitch will be just fine and a trailer brake if the camper has brakes. Should be fine with that setup
